Grimes consistently rates well on local and national rankings and test scores average higher than the Chicago average. A new artificial turf playground and field were installed in May of 2014. The naming of the school seems a bit unclear. It may be named after a man who served many years in the US Navy. What I do like about this school is that it seems to (contrary to popular demand) cater to their students in a way that many public schools seem to miss. They really take their kids seriously, and although they have a bad rap, it doesn't seem this way to parents. They have a football field (a few blocks away from the school) and the kids are always practicing. The actual school is still in its vintage look, but with modern updates to make sure that they are still caught up with other schools. I use to come around to pick up relatives who went here and often times I would volunteer. All in all, not a bad school, just that sometimes a few rufians mess up the reputation but the school can stand on its own.

Maritza Ceballos-Garcia is a first grade teacher. She called the police on my 6 year old child who…read moreis clearly on the spectrum. She accused him of "assault" because she claims her pulled her hair. Yet, she never told authorities she squeezed my 6yr olds fingers before he acted that way. I tried to make a complaint on Friday and what a coincidence no principal nor assistant principal nor the family coordinator nor counselor nor anyone that could help was available. No one ever called back that the security guard said would call me back neither. How are they quick to call the cops on a child but can't even hear somebody out when it's one of their own who's in the wrong? I know they're trying to protect and cover for Ceballos and The school but wrong is wrong. I called the police twice and waited over an hour at the school to file a police report , to no avail. I have a feeling they called the police district and asked them not to come. Because how did they show up within minutes for a 6 years old but never arrive for a grown adult? Despite so many setbacks I still managed making a police report, so if there is ever another complaint on Ceballos hurting a student be it physically, mentally or emotionally there is a paper trail. Do not send your children to this school especially if they are on the spectrum. She and I'm sure the other teachers and staff will call the police on your child with no hesitation, since they condoned her behavior. Beware and be safe.

I wish that my daughter hadn't decided to go here, she had the opportunity to go somewhere else. She was registered and classes all set up for her to start school but had a falling out with a friend and said she wanted to switch to Kennendy. If you Google this school you will find a few stories of these terrible situations but they aren't all there in the news and I'm not talking about FB news feed. Almost every single time I am at the school there is a fight. And no that isn't normal. There is a huge bullying problem too! My daughter that graduated last year was a victim and even though it was reported and the police were in the room at the time when they told the student to stop or else they would step in it still went on. I'm not posting this to "cry/whine" about the school but to help other parents.

The past has given the 60629 area (where I live), crowded schools and very run down and antiquated spaces. But in 2009, that became a thing of the past. With Hernandez school coming to the forefront and able to show the south west side how innovative the architects did up this beautiful building. If you ever get a chance, stop by and ask for information, I am sure you will be highly impressed. This school rivals the Near North Academy on the North-side of Chicago. Amazing work and the building is still being worked on for even more space.
