I can't say enough about the incredible artwork of Dylan Tate at Love Hate Tattoo. I first went to him about two years ago to get the tattoo on the right, which is a photo of a pittie I became very attached to at Posh Pets Rescue in Long Beach. I wanted something to memorialize him, so I went to Dylan, who did the amazing job you see below. Two years later I decided to memorialize my dog Max in the same way. And the job Dylan did on that one (the photo on the left) is even more incredible. The photos that Dylan worked off of are also shown below, so you can see just how amazing his work is. The tattoo of Max is so lifelike it's scary. The cost for this amazing artwork is more than reasonable. While this city is home to a handful of talented tattoo artists, Love Hate is the creme de la creme of tattoo studios in Rochester. Clean, professional, and experienced is what you're paying for- and it ain't cheap (I believe the starting rate is $150 an hour). Although expensive, you're paying for extraordinary artists who have years of experience in creating and tattooing custom artwork. If you have a huge piece you'd like to get tattooed, this is one of the few places in the city you can trust to get the job done right the first time. I'll admit my first experience with this shop was intimidating, but like other reviews have stated once the ice is broken, they're all very nice and social. I had scheduled an appointment with Ben Wight in the fall of 2006 to get a custom piece done on my feet. I came to Ben with an idea of what I was looking for and he took my ideas and inspirations and created a beautiful piece that I am proud to show off. Ben was kind, professional, and made sure to clearly explain to me everything he was doing before he did it. The tattoos came out beautiful, and out of all my tattoos, they are still the most complimented on to this day. Love Hate isn't cheap, and in reality great tattoo work isn't. You can try and save by going somewhere inexpensive with inexperienced tattooers but in the end you'll end up paying when you do end up at their studio to have one of them fix your botched tattoo anyway. read more

I got my first tattoo at Love Hate, so I feel obligated to give it a good rating. The guy who gave me my tattoo was very nice, considering I was a young girl getting my first tattoo. He gave me a lot of advice on it and charged me the shop minimum. This shop was very intimidating to me at first, but if you open up to them, they'll open up to you! Everyone here is extremely tatted up, or pierced...which is a beautiful thing, but if you're a newbie, you might want to try a different shop. I kind of wish I had. Convenient location to downtown. Clean and reputable shop. While I have heard a lot of people say that it is overrated and overpriced, all of the work by the artists here seems very good, and they all come across as skilled and professional. I've gotten 3 tattoos done at Love Hate and in February I will get my 4th tattoo by my 3rd artist. The artists I've experienced were: Zane - his personality is sweet and kind, he makes you feel very much at ease when tattooing you. I love that he is the new generation of a family business, his pride shows on his face and in his work. Dylan - not much for conversation and his beard was just too magnificent to be comfortable around. Although he wasn't much for warm fuzzies, the tattoo he gave me is absolutely beautiful. I get complimented all the time but most importantly, when it's just me and the mirror, my thigh has now become my favorite body part. In February I have an appointment booked with Ben. Based off his instagram page I don't think I'll be disappointed in his work either. So far I experienced the planning stages with him; he was prompt and clear when answering me and seemed genuinely intrigued about designing my new tattoo. I contacted Mike (the manager) by email to schedule an appointment for a tattoo. He suggested one of his artists (Lea), and in March of this year I went in to talk with her about what I was looking for. I scheduled an appointment for July (that was the earliest appointment Mike could give me!), and in order to secure the appointment, he instructed me to put down an $100 deposit (which would then go toward the tattoo cost). I contacted him a couple days ago to ensure I was still scheduled, and he informed me that Lea had left without a way to contact her, and he would not return my deposit!!! He didn't even offer to schedule me with someone else - a VERY POOR way to conduct business!! I would never consider going there in the future. read more

I went here because I've been going to Dorje Adornments for piercings for years and my boyfriend got me a gift certificate. My artist was Zane. I got text tattoo on my forearm. To be frank, I was nervous about going to Zane because his portfolio on the website isn't all that great. I decided to put my worry aside because, from what I could see in pictures, his lines were good and that's all I needed for a good text tattoo. However, now that my tattoo is almost healed, I'm very dissatisfied. I held perfectly still the entire time but some of the lines are blurry which from research I guess is a blow out. There are lots of loops in the design, some of which are not really circular. Finally, there are some lines that are just plain inconsistent-- thicker in some spots and thinner in others. I definitely need to get it touched up but I'm not even sure how easy it is to fix mistakes like what I see on my arm. I obviously don't want to go back to the same artist and given my unhappiness I'm also kind of nervous to go back to the shop at all, to get this one fixed or for any tattoos. Maybe this was one bad experience with one artist and everyone else is amazing. I feel bad leaving this review because Zane came in on his day off to do this tattoo for me and he was very sweet and pleasant to me throughout the process. I was lucky enough at a young age to be recommended to Jet before he opened Love Hate. It probably made the difference between my complete adoration of tattoos, and a lack of faith that anyone could do them well. Jet, simply put, is awesome. I transitioned with him and he did my sleeve and huge chest piece. He is completely laid back - we could either talk or just listen to music/shop talk (I'm kind of a quiet sitter). Not only that, so nonjudgmental about everything. I had embarrassing scars that were on my arm and some cover up work needed, and he was compassionate and kind about my questions in covering them, never made me feel uneasy. And with the chest piece when I needed a time out (only time!) he was super cool and even got me a soda which helped shake off the "I've been sitting for three hours" feeling. CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH - MOST IMPORTANT: Their work is outstanding. Yeah, it is great if a tattooer is nice and funny, but if they do prison-quality tattoos (when you didn't request the style) then it is YOU who has to walk around explaining your not-so-great tattoo for the rest of your life. "But the artist was really sweet..." No. The best thing about Love Hate is that they are quality, 100%. The tattoos I have from Love Hate vs Random Shop are brighter, have less (or no) fading, are far more complimented on, and the workmanship isn't even debatable: Jet wins hands down. Keep in mind my tattoos from Jet are 11 to 5 years old! Check out my sweet wedding photo to see how they have kept up, from my 18-29 years. (Sorry it is a wedding pic, I'm not that kind of person, but it is the most detailed I have on hand.) Each of the artists has a style, so I feel confident in recommending the place to friends who don't really have mine. I've seen amazing things come out of this shop. Any and everything. I leave there feeling great. The guys make me laugh when I am there during a four hour stretch. They are super professional with their work as well. Getting an appointment with popular artists can get difficult in the summer, but is definitely not impossible. No matter where you end up, please remember that you are getting a tattoo and waiting is better than rushing. If you impulsively go to "some dude" without doing your homework... who knows? I have friends that travel across the country to see Jet and the guys, and now that I am in Boston I still would travel to get in. That must say something. read more

I recently got my seventh tattoo from Love Hate. It was the first one I have gotten there, and my experience with my artist Ben will make me go there from now on. Ben was super friendly and we chatted the whole time during the tattoo. He made me feel really comfortable and kept checking to make sure I was feeling okay and seeing if I needed a break. All of the artists here are really nice, and chatted with me while I was there, and they all seem very talented. It can seem a bit pricey compared to other shops, but I guarantee it will be worth it in the end, and you get your moneys worth. It can be hard to get an appointment, but if you have a small tattoo you want done they try to get you in the day you walk in, and if they can't they will work to accommodate a time you can come. read more

Upon meeting Lea, she was very friendly and reassured me she could take on the piece I was looking for. The finished product wasn't exactly what I had hoped for but was acceptable. After it healed there were spots that needed touching up. The style of my tattoo was suppose to be realistic and I did not want black outlines in the flower. When she touched up the tattoo she added black lines to the flower pretty much destroying what I had intended. I never asked her to do that. Not only did she add the black lines but they weren't connected, not straight and made it look even more unfinished than it was before. She had a client after me so she seemed to rush though mine and made a careless decision. I emailed her to tell her my dissatisfaction, but no response, almost a week later. In a world that relies on email for communication it's unprofessional to leave your customers hanging whether you've completed the project or not. Unfortunately, you sign your rights away with tattoos and they can pretty much take your money and not be responsible when a customer is unhappy, after they take your money. She has said my tattoo would be bright in color and made the comment that she had run out of the pink ink in my initial sitting. Well if you don't have the right supplies then you don't do the work. Being unprepared is not acceptable. Very disappointed. Included picture. It's kind of hard to see the epic mess up because I'm not a professional photographer but, bottom line, there aren't supposed to be black lines. read more

I'm giving this place five stars because of Jet and Zane. I can't speak to Dylan or Adam as I have never had work done by them. I haven't had work done by Jet, either, but as the owner I've had interactions with him on the many, many occasions I've been in this shop and he is a peach, honestly. He's super nice and very professional. Not surprisingly, Zane works in the shop and is also a peach. I've been getting tattooed for 11 years and I've always felt confidant in their cleanliness and practices. I haven't been to this shop in a long, long time. I started getting tattooed by Adrian when he was apprenticing under Shawn Conn at The Ultimate. At that time, he was my go-to artist and remained my go-to artist for several years. That is, until he started treating me poorly in my opinion. Several times he forgot appointments or showed up hours late. The last time I got work done by him, I had an appointment for a small (about the size of a quarter) piece. I made the appointment I did because I had to work later that day. When I arrived, he was running behind. We both knew my piece would only take ten minutes, but instead of taking me, he took a 2-3 hour sitting and left me in the waiting room. I could absolutely understand taking that client ahead of me if my sitting were also going to take an hour plus, but when he finally got to me, it literally took ten minutes. 15-20 tops with set up and clean up. I didn't say anything at the time, but I'm sure the 2-3 hour sitting wouldn't have minded waiting 20 minutes in order to save me several hours. As a loyal client for years, I was very disappointed with this experience and I haven't been back to him or the shop since. I do acknowledge that this happened many years ago, but unfortunately experiences like that stick with you. Due to this, I probably wouldn't return to Love Hate Tattoo. read more

Shop was clean. People were nice, but my tattoo artist was unbelievably unprofessional. Her work was fine, but not good enough to ever go back. We had Christine. She made us wait for 4 hours to get 3 tattoos. One took 35 minutes, the other 25, and the last one 5. She just had no sense of urgency and was incredibly rude the entire time. Very displeased. One of the worst tattoo experiences thus far. We did not tip her well and were heavily disappointed. This place is so unprofessional. I went in to schedule at tattoo for August 31st and my tattoo artist was Zane. They said cool we'll see you then and my deposit was 100, extremely pricy for the piss poor job he tried to put on my arm. After I schedule my appointment, i email him the design i want and got nothing from him but raido silence. So the 31st comes along and I go in for appointment and this dude gave me a design I did not agree to and it had nothing to do with the design i gave him! Then he said well give me a half hour and I'll have a new one for you. So I leave to get lunch then I get a call from the shop saying there was no way he would be able to do the design and if we could reschedule, I was not happy about this because I had to give away a shift at my job for this but I agree to it because I really wanted my tattoo. So fast forward to today september 23, I'm ready to be tattoo and this horrible, unprofessional man gave me a design that looked like he traced my design and gave little to no effort on it. Then when I asked if he usually ignores when clients email him, he said in the rudest way possible 'I'm not required to respond to my emails.' At this point I'm furious because he does not contact me for over a month and then tries to over charge me for a tattoo design that looked like a five year old drew it. Needless to say be warned about love hate tattoo, it is not about you the costumer, it is about shitty tattoo artist who aren't even that good at what they do. Plus they are too expensive for the quality of work they put out. Also, do not book an appointment with Zane, he will ignore any form of contact you try to give him. read more

NO hate, just love, for Love/Hate. Friendly atmosphere, fantastic tattoos. I get my work done by Brian, who's just a super-great guy. Even if months pass between my visits, he still remembers things about me, my kids, and our previous conversations. He chats with me and really makes me feel comfortable and at home. Sometimes the other artists, or Bonnie (who may be a manager, I'm not sure) come in to chat with Brian, and they're always friendly and funny. More importantly, the tattoo work is top-notch. Brian has a really good way of interpreting my sometimes-vague desires, and of adjusting the designs to suit me. The ink doesn't come out until I think the stencil is perfect - which is, of course, as it should be. He takes real pride in his work. I've never had a rush job, and for my last tat he actually undercharged me -- I think he charged me for 2 hrs work when it really took at least 3. I got my first tattoo 10 yrs ago from Love Hate. and although it was bad...i never said anything. i was too embarrassed to go back. but after so many people insulting the tattoo,(YES my fault!!) i finally got the nerve to go back. when i walked in, i was told the artist was booked for months, so i should go with another artist. before i was able to talk to anyone, they hurried to get a deposit...then handed me a paper to sign which stated i could not get a refund????? hello...i have not even talked to an artist..but they were hurrying me along and like an idiot..i signed it! as i was waiting to talk to SOMEONE??...the original artist walked in with his dinner, and the guy at the desk pulled him aside to tell him about me. i have a witness that said i was talked to with disrespect. when i told him i wanted a cover up...he offered no apology, no discount, took no responsibility..just TOLD me what to do. when i told i wanted it done a certain waay..his reply was NO..you have to do it this way..isn't it MY body?? so a month goes by, my appointment day! I took off of work, was happy to have it done..actually excited, despite the fact i was told to NEVER go back to the artist who messed up your tattoo, to do a cover up!! 2 hrs before my appointment, i got a phone call..which the girl said...Sorry, can't do your tattoo today. he is running over. I was soooooo angry. and she did not even say (we are so sorry). she just said we can do it another day. at that point i demanded a refund. so i drove there...and again with the rudeness....Don't you understand Love Hate..that people ARE excited about their tattoos...and you could be a little more SENSITIVE towards your clients. Aiden was a great artist, and seemed to just tattoo me and knew what i wanted/ would be ok without asking. i got a tattoo by nat that i wasn't thrilled with, but it wasn't terrible. My only complaint was it is pricey but good work doesn't (usually) come cheap. totally will continue to get work done here, but not exclusively here. read more

Although they do really good work, the artists have a certain "rock-star" attitude that I don't appreciate when I'M paying THEM over $1,000 for a half-sleeve. I understand they are experienced (and there is something to be said about an experienced tattoo artist) but it would be nice to be treated like a valued customer.
