SUCH A COOL SITE! We were leaving Great Bend to go to…read moreWichita...it was only a little bit out of the way but I truly believe that it was worth it. Not only is it GINORMOUS but it also has so much history. And the views from the top are stunning! I can see why it was such an important landmark on the Santa Fe trail. You can drive straight up to the top...there is only a slight bit of a walk but it's not long and the incline is not steep. You could get an even better vantage point by climbing a spiral staircase to the top of the pavilion but by acrophobia bottom was staying on the grass! And on a warm day, the breeze up there is wonderful. I saw a couple spread a blanket out and just chill...if I was in the area, I'd do the same (all the time!) There were picnic tables to eat but I didn't notice any restroom facilities.

It's out there - WAY out there - in the middle of nowhere…read more It's big - REALLY big. No, that's not right - IT'S JUST PLAIN HUGE! You can see it from miles away, too. Pawnee Rock in southwest Kansas is a well known landmark for travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. The sandstone formation offered the biggest point on the horizon and in the old days the wagon trains navigated by it. The Sioux, Cheyenne and Pawnee used the rock as a look-out point, to keep an eye on the "anglos" as they meandered across the prairies in their covered wagons. Buffalo Bill Cody was here. Zebulon Pike was here. Kit Carson was here. To stand on Pawnee Rock is to see the southwest as the pioneers saw it. The world of the wagon trains - bison as far as the eye can see, the snorts and grunts of the ox teams, the buzzing of the flies and mosquitoes, the ever-present danger of the frontier - YOU CAN FEEL IT ALL AS YOU STAND THERE! MAKE THE EFFORT. PAWNEE ROCK IS WELL WORTH SEEING.
