Adding the adventure dive trips is nice. We were able to see a few more sites. I hope when the winds are better they go exploring more sites. Crew is always good. New boat is real nice. I do think they need to document the dive sites on a board. We all have computers, so we don't need depth, temp, etc. However, having the sites documented on a board allows us to take a pic so we can update our log books. read more

Private tour booked by my wife to explore BVI while in St. John, I had no idea what to expect. The day was awesome. Our captain, Brad, was the best - he knows which islands to visit and which to simply see from a distance. We had a great time, and the difference between a group tour and private tour is night and day - the group tour leaders seemed great but their clients - suffice it to say you don't always get agreeable people in your group. We saw several islands, learned about the local history and enjoyed our day very much. We were absolutely wiped out by the end, but in a good way. Shop personnel were very friendly. All equipment needed was available and in good condition. We weren't expecting much from the dives knowing the coral and sea life took a beating with 2 hurricanes. We saw about what we expected; not a lot of vibrant coral and minimal sea life. We don't blame the dive shop for this at all. The reasons for our rating are 1) the short duration of both dives and 2) the lack of professionalism of the Dive Master (DM). Only my boyfriend, myself and another couple on the boat. All 4 experienced divers who have dived in the past year. I've logged over 200 non-training dives all over the world (I'm a Master Diver, Dive Master & Asst Instructor) so I know what a DM should do. Our DM, Lilliann, was a nice young lady. Her very skimpy bikini was inappropriate and the first hint of her lack of professionalism; a DM should present themselves appropriately for their position. Save the sexy for other times. That was the opinion of all 4 of us. The 1st dive was very shallow (15-26'). Lilliann was frequently way ahead of the 4 of us, with 1 diver having issues descending/clearing due to a recent cold (disclosed to DM prior to the dive). Had there been any type of "situation" she was in no position to see it or respond appropriately. She seemed more interested in her own dive experience than in her role as a PADI professional. We all surfaced after a VERY short time with approximately 2000 psi. The second dive was to a max depth of 48' and again, very short duration with all 3 of us surfacing with about 2000 psi. (The 4th diver with ear issues skipped this dive). No safety stop which I would have recommended due to the age/weight of my boyfriend. Not strictly necessary based on depth/duration but it's better to err on the side of caution. I can't remember any dives where I've surfaced with so little bottom time/so much air. Overall, disappointing and would not recommend unless you can have the crew take you to more interesting locations, and make your expectations clear for bottom time. Would certainly recommend a more professional and aware DM for less experienced divers. read more

The woman who was renting us the snorkel equipment was nice enough but clearly didn't know very much so the manager (owner?) came over and she managed to alienate herself from my entire family in less than one minute. She was rude and pushy. She also stated some things about snorkeling that are factually incorrect. Later that night, I was at a different location on St. John and a random person came up to me and asked me if I had been at the store earlier in the day because he remembered my question and her absurd and incorrect answer. When we returned the gear the same manager was there and she was incredibly, shockingly rude. You just don't need this kind of nonsense when you go to rent snorkeling equipment. We loved our experience with Low Key Watersports. There were five employees to about twenty people. They provided all of the equipment and gave lots of guidance where needed. The atmosphere stayed relaxed and enjoyable throughout the entire excursion. The boat was pretty crowded but you do not spend much time on it so it's not an issue. They provided a large cooler of fresh water and disposable cups. The crew brought us to two areas. We stayed for about an hour at each location. Everything went smooth considering the different skill levels and the amount of equipment for each participant. The crew was quick and very efficient. They got everybody off and back on the boat pretty quickly. read more

Yesterday, I returned to do a 2 tank dive after 20+ years of no diving. I did the refresher being all anxious to remember everything. The boat crew was awesome! Not once did I feel uncomfortable and they understood my need to refresh and initially know someone was keeping an eye on me, once in the water. Half way through the first dive, the guide saw us all settle down and get back into it and was able to focused on showing us cool stuff.... My guide was Brent. The other guide Mike was attentive too. But as my guide he totally new the water and where to bring us for great things to see. Anytime I am in St John or St Thonas, I'll use them and ask for Brent. "Enjoy a leisurely snorkel at two different locations" advertised @ $50/person sounded like a great deal... Perhaps it was the day we went out, but it was very choppy, far from leisurely. I'm a strong swimmer, but the waves and strong current were challenging, and heeded the captain's warning to watch out for being "slammed into rocks" near the reefs. Scuba diving seemed to be the better option. Convenient location with parking is a plus. read more

We chose this dive shop because we thought we would be able to experience new dive sites around/closer to St. John. We thought it would be nice to start early at 8AM but that is actually just to make sure they have time to go over to St. Thomas and pick up clients at the Ritz Carlton on St. Thomas. Subsequently, we went to dive sites easily accessible from St. Thomas. As we were staying on St. Thomas and had to take the ferry over to this dive shop, this did not seem like a good use of our time. We did inform the dive shop ahead of time where we were staying but they did not give us prior notification. Unfortunately, for some reason the dive times were extremely short. Maybe 20-25 minutes, compared to our usual 45-50 min. My fiancé and I were both instructed to surface with more than 2,000 PSI in our tanks on both of our 2 dives. It seemed we were running behind schedule as we had to run back to Ritz Carlton between the 2 dives when 1 of the clients forgot their mask there. Not sure why else our dive times were so limited as we were with fairly experienced divers. I will say the dive sites chosen were spectacular and the captain was considerate in taking us somewhere new. The dive master and captain were both friendly and courteous to us throughout the trip. read more

Certified? . . . Steer clear Summery: If a dive accident occurs don't expect the staff to recognize it they might but don't expect it. Don't expect to dive a site deeper than 40ft or on St John. Per the owner "The Hurricane in two years ago (2018) just destroyed all of the reefs on St John, we use 'shared' dive sites near St Thomas." Expect that schedule and planning will not allow for safety stops or surface intervals and the sites will be scheduled accordingly. Per the owner "we don't have time for 60 min dives here, but staff should allow divers 42 to 50 minutes underwater." (But don't forget time lost in a circle waiting for training to be completed). The reefs were pretty but not worth troubling with this operator. Travel to St Thomas and the short boat ride to the same sites from the east end of the island. Bottom line is Low Key is built around certification and refreshers. On the way to St Thomas to our first dive site we were informed that no safety stops and no surface interval would be included in our dives because they would be too shallow to require them. Our first dive to 19fsw was a training dive for some of the group, 7+ minutes waiting in a circle for mask clears and regulator recoveries to be preformed by the instructor that would be leading the "tour" as well. The tour was expeditious lasting 32 minutes including the 4min to and 5min back from the reef. At this point the dive was over . . . mind boggled at spending $280 for two divers and $33 for the ferry to spend 23 min on the first reef we pause as the DM/instructor leaves the water with his students. And a pair of dolphins swim up to play ... yeah! Spend 15 min underwater at the back of the boat for a total bottom time of 54min and surface at the swim-step. We are not even out of the water when the yelling from the crew starts. The young captain asks in a raised voice "why are you back 15 minutes after the last divers?" Sheepishly I reply we were right under the boat in 19ft and only down 54 min. "You are back 15 min later than everyone else and this will make us late to our next dive site... And THAT will make us late back to the dock for the afternoon trip!" I replied that the shop had assured us that we would not be part of a class group and only diving with certified divers. To this she replys "DO YOU WANT TO TAKE THIS TO THE FRONT OF THE BOAT?!" Basically asking me if I wanted to take this outside in a threatening manner. To their defense or admonition it turns out they had an issue with a scuba student. A man had come up and immediately started projectile vomiting while we were on the bottom. With no diver recall in place or at least reviewed in the briefing I would consider this unsafe. But this did not matter as they diagnosed it as sea sickness despite his replies to the contrary. If not related to sea sickness this was most likely a ruptured ear drum, if not much worse. A rapid change in state should be attributed to the most recent events: the DIVE ... not brushed off as sea sickness especially when the patient says otherwise. read more

Our family really enjoyed our day on the boat with the fabulous Andre and the marvelous Porter. They were both great, good natured, and conversational with my husband and I, and our teenage kids. We were all a bit nervous and unsure as to what would happen, but, Andre and Porter were such naturals and answered all of our questions and were excellent teachers. I have been diving with Low Key on vacations going back to 2005, and they have consistently been amazing. I started going with them as newbie SCUBA diver. I took classes with them to gain certifications for Advanced Open Water, Rescue Dover and ultimately DiveMaster. I went back with them post-Hurricane after a ten year layoff from USVI, scuba diving, etc and they were welcoming and patient, and made me feel super comfortable. Great couple of dives led by Andre and a guy that resembled Jason Momoa (Aquaman!). I was pretty disappointed with this dive shop. It's been a few years since I last dove so I was excited to try with this new place on St. John. We normally dive with Red Hook on St. Thomas. My dad and I are big divers and unfortunately, he's been dealing with medical issues recently that made us hesistant to dive more than 40 feet. We asked the dive shop in advance if we would be able to stay around 40 feet and the woman in the office said "we don't do dives over 40 feet". Well we get out there on the water the day of the dive and we're told the first spot is 80-90 feet. That then changed once we arrived at our location and we were able to stay at 40 feet which was good. While on the dive we saw several sharks but that was completely ruined by seeing the anchor the dive shop threw completely mangling some beautiful coral. I mean the anchor was EMBEDDED in coral. When we talked to the captain Acua about it, he just said that the mooring line broke months ago and a new one hasn't been attached. I do not recommend this place at all - mostly because of their failure to respect ocean wildlife but also because it really feels like there's a level of arrogance with the instructors. Several instructors that were off work chose to come on the dive with us since it was hailed to be such a good spot. I personally was not a fan and will not be diving with Low Key again. read more

Another great find, thanks to Yelp! We were staying at the Westin, but after reading the reviews for their dive shop...I was really hesitant to trust my life (and hard-earned money) with them. Searching around, I found Low Key. They had me at...rescue dogs! Seriously! Well, that and the glowing reviews! (Check out their website...cute dogs!!) Not only are they big supporters of the St. John Animal Care Center, they are a group of friendly, fun and knowledgeable people. My bro and I were recently certified and did our open water dives in Monterey. We wanted to make sure our first real introduction to diving 'in the real world' was through a reputable group. We decided to hop on the boat with their 'discover scuba' folks as the diver to dive guide ratio was excellent - wanted to make sure we didn't totally screw up. Our guide was excellent - the highlight was him pulling a 6-pound lobster out of an old sunken cannon on the ocean floor...amazing! We did a total of 4 dives with them and had a chance to see a different spot each time. Everyone was helpful, they have a high ratio of guides to divers, and the boat is spotless and in tip -top condition. Bonus: they picked us up at no charge from the Westin! This is the best dive shop that I have found! We first went there in Feb 2018 and did a Discover Scuba tour (Luke and Max as Dive Masters). We fell in love with scuba and spent the next three days getting certified (Luke). We just visited St John for vacation and completed three, two-tank dives. They were great. The people make the difference. The shop team, Makenzie, Ed and Co. The drivers, Cody, Gavin and Basil. The Dive Masters, Nora, Lindsey, CJ, PJ and Will. We visited great sites, too. Congo, Mingo, Grass, Little St John and Cow. I also really appreciated that they were patient with us. We are new and they did not look down on us. Highly recommend! I throughly enjoyed my discover scuba trip with Low Key. I did not make a reservation I nearly walked in and asked if they had any spots open and they were able to a get me on a trip that day. I would suggest you make a reservation but if you happen to walk by and get the urge to dive deff inquire. The woman at the desk was super friendly and even allowed me to charge my phone while I was out on the dive. The dive it's self was awesome I saw so many animals including turtles. The staff was great and made me feel at ease and safe at all times. This may seem not very important to a lot of people but my favorite part of the dive was the fact that they had a woman on their staff I have done many adventurous things where instructors were an integral part of the experience and it's not that often that one of the instructors is a woman ( I don't know why), but I felt it Inspiring and refreshing. If you're coming to St. John and thinking about going on a dive.. you should definitely dive with Low Key Watersports! My boyfriend (at the time) planned our dive for us, we came early and everyone on the team was super nice, the shop had everything you would need, we purchased our rash guards there (they're lifesavers!) We went on 2 dives with Greg and the crew (I'm so sorry I don't remember everyone's names), we dived in Mingo Cay and Steven's Cay. On the 2nd dive at Steven's Cay, I had the surprise of my life, my boyfriend proposed to me underwater with help from Greg and the entire crew, everyone knew about it and they have been in the works for months. Low Key Watersports definitely helped my fiancee make the moment even more special and amazing. We would like to thank Low Key Watersports for such an amazing dive and experience of our life. We went out twice. The first time with Erin and she was great! The second time we had Nora who seemed to be a bit condescending and when our personal regulators showed the air psi to be way below what their equipment showed she made us feel like it was our equipment until the other dive leader Conner (who was also great) put his personal regulator on our tanks and it showed the same psi as we did. They gave us new tanks but does put it out there on their equipment. read more
