Review for RedHook dives: Five stars and an inverted fist to the top of my head for RedHook dives! Instructor Scott and Captain Mike were a great team, taking my pal and me for a private morning excursion to sites called the Ledges and the Stragglers. We were interested in a personalized tour to build our skills and our needs were more than met. Scott brought the humor and patience of a retired Jr. high school math teacher, the knowledge of a self professed "gear head", and the curiosity and familiarity with some 50 dive sites in the area to craft an experience that met us exactly where we were. He elicited our favorite learning styles and guided us through our gear eval and assembly, asking us what if any skills we wanted to work on (I wanted to review how to restore my mask if it came dislodged or water filled) and then toured us knowledgeably through the sites. They were magical. It was such an honor to see these environments, each rich with fish darting and nibbling, corals alternately smeared, standing and swaying in the current, and the quiet snapping throughout of fish, sponges and corals: eating, retreating, and living. Highlight might have been the pufferfish who, even in relaxed state, was the size of my head. Amazing experience. Thank you, team Red Hook!

I used Red Hook Divers for my first time this week! It was great. Captain Don (or Dan?), and Dive Master Serenity was great. Their boat was top notch, had a wonderful coushin mat so you don't slip, a fresh water hose to rose off after the dives, water, and oranges in between dives. The equipment was new and great condition. My BCD was very nice, with integrated weights so no need for a clunky weight belt. I love that. The dives were great. Serenity guided us around Ledges dive site, and then Stragglers rock. Both sites were great, we saw a lot of marine life including sing ray, turtles, spotted eel, lobsters, lots of fish. Serenity helped me get to the boat quickly when I was too cold to continue diving. She took great care of us. I also love how they still took us diving, with only a party of 3! Such a nice treat to not be on a crowded dive boat, thank you!! I'd love to dive here again, I was very impressed! Thanks so much!

Amazing Day diving with Audrey!! Steve drove the boat - We had 7 divers and 2 snorkelers. They took great care of us and showed us the beautiful waters and marine life. Steve and Audrey were fun people, easy to talk to and incredibly knowledgeable!! We learned a ton, saw so many animals and had a great day!!

Amazing experience! We were a group of five (two certified divers, two uncertified divers, and one snorkeler), and we had the trip to ourselves. We had Gem as our boat captain and Aaron as our diving guide/instructor. Both were cool guys who worked well together and made the trip fun. On the two tank boat dive, we went to two locations, with one dive at each. I think each dive was 30-45 minutes long. As the uncertified divers doing the Discover Scuba, we were frequently monitored by Aaron throughout the dive, while the certified divers stayed nearby. Our snorkeling friend was able to watch us from above and check out the reefs, and had a great time talking with Gem on the boat. We saw tons of fish, a couple brittle stars (like a skinny-legged starfish), a giant lobster, and even a small shark. We had a blast with these guys, and would definitely recommend Red Hook Dive Center!

We have spent 4 of 7 days so far (we have all 7 booked with Red Hook) and we are loving it! Every dive has been different, from wrecks to the most fabulous rock formations full of beautiful fish! Calf Rock, Cow Rock and Straglers are amazing and can't be missed! Very professional owners, Don and Susan and we also love our gorgeous DM Ali (she's super knowledgeable) Every detail is thought out to make each day perfect. If you want to be pampered and super safe, you can't go wrong with Red Hook. They pick us up daily on St John and we head out from there. We were lucky enough to get a private boat so we could dive to our level and not in a big group. Very personalized attention! Diving with a difference!

Great experience with Captain Sean and dive master Kellen. Smooth and easy. They knew the dive sites well, and prioritized safety.

This was a two tank dive near Buck Island off St. Thomas, one dive at Wye Reef and one dive at Cartanza Wreck which is actually three spots that are close together. Captain David took us out in the Tropic Diver II and Shelby was our dive master. The boat was clean, the equipment seemed well taken care of, and both Shelby and Captain David were extremely friendly and helpful. There was another dive master who had four non-certified divers on the other end of the boat. I had no interaction with them. This was an excursion booked through Carnival. This company goes by Underwater Adventure and Adventure Scuba and School. I mention this because the only way I found them to review since Carnival does not provide the name of the company was to do a search for the boat!!! There were four certified divers, an excellent number for a newly certified diver because both Shelby and my dive buddy took extra care to watch after me. During my two dives, I saw the nice reef, the wreck sites, a shark, an eel, a turtle, a lobster, several white sea urchins, one large black sea urchin, and lots of fish. Because it was my first dive I did not want to be distracted with a camera, therefore I'm not able to share what I saw. The attached photos came off the web. I highly recommend this company. I was nervous for my first dive but Shelby was reassuring and made sure I did everything safely. I can not say enough good about the experience!!!!

On this Holland America ship excursion, the diving was OK, but I was very surprised to see Aluminum…read more72cf scuba tanks being used instead of Aluminum 80cf tanks, which required adjusting my preset tank straps on my BCD. Although it was not a problem, I was just surprised to find these tanks on a Caribbean dive. In fact, this was the only dive operator I have used anywhere in the world that uses these tanks, but I doubt many of the divers had a clue at to what size tank they had. Although the air quantity was ultimately sufficient for the shallow, low dive time profiles (33.5 and 37 minute dives), I would have preferred to have Aluminum 80s, and longer dive times. In all fairness to the dive operator, this was a ship excursion with a lot of low experience divers on a very large dive boat, and they no doubt had a tight schedule to maintain. The crew did a nice job dealing with, and keeping safe, so many low experience divers. I would have rated this dive operator higher had they split the divers into compatible experienced divers to provide a better dive experience for everyone.

The directions said to take a cab to the Sugar Bay Resort and arrive 30 mins prior to 12pm departure. They advised me that the cab ride should be $10 each way and about a 15 min ride. FYI - the cab ride is $10 PER PERSON! This was not made clear to me. The cab dropped us at the lobby of the resort where we were told to wait for the resort shuttle to take us down to the watersports gazebo. Well it took almost 15 mins for the shuttle guy to show up. When we walked up to the lady from our excursion she said to us "Oh you must be on Island Time!" in a snarky manner. I quickly advised that we were there at 11:30 waiting at the top of the resort to be brought down to the meeting spot. It appeared we were the last people to arrive at 11:45. We then had to take our shoes off and get into a small inflatable dingy boat that took us out to the catamaran. We hopped on and the boat left right away. There was the captain (can't remember his name) and a 1st mate named Michael. It was about a 45 min ride to the beach area. When we arrived we were told that you can't have any rum punch until after we are done snorkeling, which was fine with me but it's not clearly stated on their website. They do not provide life jackets, only Noodles. So if you aren't a swimmer I'm not sure this is the right excursion for you. The area is pretty big and all they tell you is to " go over that way for the fish and stay this way for the turtles and sting rays". Well no one saw any turtles or sting rays. To be honest, you shouldn't book this trip for that reason only. Go to Cayman Islands to see those animals. I saw some different fish but that was it. We were allowed about 45 mins to explore the water. My mother in law had to take the dingy boat to the beach area and hang out as she doesn't know how to swim. Once we were called back on the boat we were offered rum punch/pain killers to sip on while they set up the lunch for us. The lunch was ok, lunch meats, cheeses, fresh bread with potato salad and pasta salad. After everyone was done eating, they cleaned up and we headed back to the resort. During the whole trip, the captain nor 1st mate were very friendly or talkative. The only interesting thing that the 1st mate pointed out was Kenny Chesney's house at the top of the mountain when we arrived at the beach/snorkeling area and he only told us that were sitting up front. Also if you are looking for the "sailing" experience look elsewhere since they only used the sails for a short while and the motor the rest of the time. Once we arrived back at the resort it was 4pm. I had advised our taxi driver to pick us up at 4pm so we were a little anxious to get off the boat. While the 1st mate was getting the shoe bucket in the dingy and preparing to start trips to the beach he looked at us and said " Just Chillax, it's going to be a few mins" He could have taken us 3 with the bucket of shoes but instead he was rude to us. Overall I think this trip is way overpriced. $105pp for that is ridiculous. All the other excursions that I looked into for a similar trip that had great reviews but didn't serve lunch were about $55-$70 pp. Their lunch is not worth $40! My advice is to go with another company as they did nothing but make us feel like we were putting them out and they just wanted their $$$. Never again.

They are competent, fun, and go to great lengths to make sure you're really comfortable with every aspect of diving. Even if you're kind of terrified by the idea of breathing underwater (what? It's scary!), you'll feel safe in their very capable hands. I went for PADI Open Water Diver certification with a group of 9 friends, all of whom had different levels of experience and comfort with diving. Arnaud, Tania, Shauna, and Carlito put us at ease right away with their easy-going yet professional attitude - all of us got plenty of personal attention, and they made sure we really learned and understood everything and didn't rush us through the exercises, even though we got a late start (our fault) on the first day. It's a lot of work over 3 pretty long days, but they kept it fun by joking around and telling us cool things about the island, and my husband (who had actually done open water certification before, but never mailed in his info to get the card) said they were much more thorough than the last outfit he did it with - important, when it comes to little things like being able to breathe! These guys, and particularly Tania, deserve some sort of medal for the way they handled me. I have tiny, crappy lungs and a healthy fear of the ocean, and after screwing up an exercise and gulping a bunch of water at 16' I declared myself DONE with scuba forever (even though Tania got a cleared regulator into my mouth so I could breathe almost instantly). When I didn't come back the next day, they pulled my husband aside and offered to work one-on-one with me to help me overcome my fear and get my SCUBA Diver Certification, which is kind of like Open Water Lite (you can dive up to 40 feet, with a guide). They could have easily just taken my money and walked, but they were genuinely invested in seeing me succeed. Tania worked one-on-one with me and was SO patient and kind: I had a freak-out almost as soon as I went under and she got me calmed down, had me practice surface skills, and then just swam around with me underwater and pointed out fish and turtles along the reef until I was comfortable enough to practice skills again. She has an incredibly nurturing, comforting vibe that comes across even underwater, and by the end of the day I was totally chilled out and excited about diving...a far cry from the hyperventilating mess who first entered the water! I honestly thought I would never dive again, but after working with Tania I actually ended up going back to finish up my Open Water Certification - with Isla Nena Scuba, of course!

We were told we had to first buy and complete the course work through PADI and from There they would do the water/ dive sessions and compete the certification. The shop also gets a kick back from Padi as work since it makes u select a dive shop where ur course work is sent to. Once we complete the course work, we each reached out to the dive shop about 2 - 1 1/2 weeks in advance to schedule the dates and times for the water sessions. We did not receive any type of response back from the shop. We attempted to message on whatsup as requested but still did not receive a confirmation or any type of communication. We called down to the shop, where we were told to just text them. We again tried to text the shop but did not receive any response. We flew to San Juan and arrived and immediately went to the shop, we were told to text them and they would get back to us.. we asked directly if they had availability and we were told they would check and get back to us via text.... This was without doubt the worst type of un-reliable customer service and a refusal to communicate.. I would not trust this dive shop or operation. They should never have told us to use to do the course work with their shop and then refuse to complete our certification. Luckily Scuba Dogs next door came to our rescue when we told them about the horrible customer service we received. Just be aware this shop will not be reliable.
