I cannot rate the actual school. I've already completed undergrad and attended grad school at other universities. My rating is solely because I've been on a bunch of campuses for book signings, and it's ALWAYS super complicated to figure out how to get from Point A to Point B (including my own alma maters). I went to this location solely for a Red Cross blood donation drive. I love how their campus is set up. Not only did they have signs on the doors and a cone out front to figure out which building to get into, but as soon as I opened my mouth to ask a student where the building was, I turned and saw a clear map to find it on my own. (I was super close so she pointed me the rest of the way. Friendly young lady.) Since I can no longer find this location in upcoming blood drives, I'm assuming that Red Cross may not be there permanently. But the campus is clean. The front desk people (for the school) were professional. The two students (workers?) who were on the Red Cross side were organized and professional. And the attendees behind the tent were great too. I hope Loyola Rogers Park makes this a permanent thing. Although I walked, it's very convenient that it's accessible by the el. And it was nothing at all like all the complications I experienced at another facility trying to donate plasma. It took me longer to walk to the school than it did for the actual six-minute donation. Kudos to them for allowing Red Cross onto their campus. read more

I transferred to Loyola from Occidental College. From the moment I began at Loyola, I felt that the administration barely even was aware of my existence. I was not given housing, financial aid, or any support with finding off campus housing near the school. When I started taking classes, I was appalled at the lack of quality among instructors. I had professors who would not show up to class, or would give me assignments that I could see they purchased online, because they hadn't taken out the name of the company or the teacher instructions. With class registration, I found academic advisors often gave me different answers, and it was a genuine challenge to see the same advisor twice. Currently, the course offerings are so slim in my major (business management) that it is hard to select a class schedule where even half of the classes are going towards my major. In summary, this is not a school for finishing your degree quickly or efficiently. It's the kind of institution where you'll have to take a lot of classes that feel pointless and random because they are. And those are the professors who are least likely to actually care about the quality of their instruction. You'll be in a cohort of students who don't seem to really give a damn. Most of my classes are filled with 80-85% of the students on their computers playing NYT games or watching youtube. Most of the classes I have taken have been lecture format, where a professor goes through slides at the front of a silent classroom. I've had many classes with 2 or 3 graded assignments in the entire semester. Most of my Professors don't give any feedback on homework or tests and certainly never return them, and so it's generally pretty difficult to know how to improve. On the student life side, the student body is incredibly cliquey and unwelcoming. After two and a half years at the organization, I know 0 fellow Loyola students by name. I do not recommend transferring here. I really regret it. This school knows how to put lipstick on the pig, but it is far from a premier institution. If you're looking in Chicago, Loyola presents the worst ratio of cost/value of education. Look elsewhere!! read more

I've mixed feelings about Loyola, mostly from the faculty advisor/professor in my grad program--which taught about inequity and power imbalance--exerting and reproducing those exact dynamics in a pretty threatening (non-sexual) way. Luckily, he doesn't work there any longer. LUC has a pretty astounding recent history. As recently as the turn of the 21st century, it was in dire straits and closure was a distinct possibility. They've turned things around significantly, and they have the new buildings to prove it. Equity and multiculturalism are important aspects of their curriculum. When I was there a few years ago (graduated in 2016), it was my understanding that they didn't provide any condoms in campus programming. Ok, they're Catholic; but also, people have sex. Also, I'm still pretty salty about the displacement of Rogers Park residents and their deal with the city to close the last block of Kenmore before hitting campus. The Lake Shore Campus is beautiful. Madonna della Strada faces the lake, and though I never got there as a student (most of my classes were downtown), but I would like to attend something there because it's really a stunning setting. The IC (Information Commons, which is essentially the library addition) has a wall of windows along the eastern wall that looks out on the lake. I only was able to visit a couple of times before graduating, and would like to visit sometime once I get an alum ID. I do appreciate the Jesuit philosophy. And Arrupe College was incredibly innovative, a model that more than one college has tried to replicate but with limited success, and at least on college quietly discontinued their version of a similar program. It's a great extension of the Jesuit mission. And though I have a bit of hardness in my heart for some of the hypocrisy and whatnot that I encountered there, I also have some fond memories. My favorite college professor was hired in my last semester. He was great, and mine was the first portfolio he got to review and when I asked he said he was hoping I'd ask. That was the most encouraged I'd felt by a professor in years. I have considered pursuing a PhD there in part because I would like to have a chance to learn from him and some of the new faculty. It's also an undeniably beautiful campus, which is nice to wander when it's quiet. If you attend Loyola, I hope your time there is all you hope it will be. Loyola University Chicago is a Jesuit university, one of the largest Catholic universities in the U.S. It is located just north of Chicago on Lake Michigan in a delightful neighborhood/area. I visited for my niece's graduation from the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. The weather was absolutely beautiful and the graduation was special and meaningful. I took several walks around campus to admire the tulips, the lake views, and the beautiful buildings and chapel. The legend of the Wolf and the Kettle is worth googling. I went to a state university which was huge (in acreage and attendance) so it was nice to see such a modest private school situated right on the water. read more

professors and some of the students are nice, but nothing else is. the core curriculum is excessive (more credits required to complete the core than most majors), the financial aid department is incredibly unhelpful, dismissive, and dishonest (they never responded to our financial aid appeal and then told us they don't have their own financial aid, which they do actually have), and worst of all, their dining halls are HORRIBLE for students with food allergies. if you have dietary restrictions that aren't being vegan or vegetarian, the school does not care about you. They got rid of their dietician in the beginning of the first semester and didn't hire a new one until the next semester. the dietician has been incredibly rude and ignorant, even when students reach out about real issues of malnutrition and a lack of options. Some of the main dining issues are: not providing safe, nutritional food for students with celiac/gluten allergies, not listing ingredients lists, not marking things gluten free, refusal to make simple substitutions to accommodate for gluten free students (like gluten free oats instead of regular oats, leaving students with allergies out of special dining hall events with special menus (like Irish food for St. Patrick's Day, meatless options on Fridays during lent, Hawaiian food during Hawaiian heritage week, etc.), and excessive meal plan costs that are illogical and unfair (the meal plans are over $3,000 a year and are only unlimited plans. you cannot by swipe and students who have allergies are forced to pay the same thing for only one option), the menus online and in the dining halls are rarely accurate, and last but certainly not least, the food offered in the True Balance station is barely sustainabl, even if you eat every single item they offer (and they average about 2500-3500 mg of sodium a day and about 200 g or carbs, with even less protein). As a current student here, I hate it and I consider transferring every single day. For how outrageously expensive this school is, its academics should be considerably better and the student resources should way more accommodating. For a Jesuit school, Loyola Chicago is ridiculously inconsiderate and not understanding. If you can avoid, please do. They also own almost every property in the area and destroy the neighborhood. Their claims of having great relationships with the neighborhood is because they OWN the neighborhood. read more

The Jesuits are about taking care of the whole individual, mind, body and spirit and therefore they rock in providing an incredible all around university experience. And the campus is so beautiful! To this day, I still have bad feelings about my undergraduate time here. I was a transfer student which, at the time, put the sequence of nursing classes "out of sync". It meant I graduated a semester behind and back then the semester ended in January, not December. That meant I was in "no man's land" as far as class year. I could not participate in any of the senior activities. I had to make all my own arrangements for a senior photo. The photo was included in the yearbook, but not the class picture. Since I was not really part of any class, I do not have a class picture. None of the faculty even showed up to the graduation ceremony. Faculty were cruel in their evaluations and I hung on out of shear stubbornness and tenaciousness hoping that would tick them off. I would like to point out that some of their favorites did not have careers that lasted nearly as long as mine nor were they nearly as successful. When I sat on the other side of the desk, I tried to make learning fun and I ALWAYS tried to make performance evaluations just that and not personal. There were select students whose lives were made a living hell, mine was one. However, I went on to become quite successful, receive awards and accomplish many things my classmates never did, nor did the faculty that taught me. read more

Can't say a word about the academics. But the view and layout is tremendous. They have secured dorms with a guard always there and students need an ID card to get in anyway. Sort of like an office setting. The dorms themselves are very nice with enough space for easily two maybe even a third... Plenty of restaurants near by. This review is in regard to the MSHR program. Evening grad. school classes are a challenge when you have a full time position (with travel), two young kids and a house to manage but Loyola was very flexible. In addition, I worked downtown and I simply drove to one of the parking lots nearby and had a quick dinner at the one of the fast food places before class. The location is very nice and gentrified, a few blocks away from Michigan Ave. After wards, I would get on lake shore drive to get home and it was very convenient. My fellow students, many of whom were already working in HR (mainly companies in the loop), brought excellent ideas and progressive thinking to addressing HR issues and projects. It was invigorating. This leads me to networking, when I applied for the grad program my VP of HR (a Loyola MSHR alumnus) provided a recommendation for me. At one point, while working for UL, there were 5 Loyola HR grads there. At my current company, I also have a fellow Loyola HR alum. It's an instant connection with this ever growing group. Of course, when you are job interviewing, there's also a high probability of someone saying, "Hey, we went to the same school." In terms of costs (including opportunity costs), it was expensive but worth every penny. Drs. Stallworth, Varma, Stroh, Scott, were my favorite professors. Looking back, even though there were long nights and countless evenings being away from the kids, I loved every class. I suggest that there be more national advertising to draw more people from around the nation. read more

Horrible administration that preaches social justice but practices none of it. an allegedly "green" campus that holds stock in oil fracking. They do not pay their nontenured staff living wages and refuse to acknowledge the work that they do. This university charges an abhorrent amount in comparison to what you actually receive. The shining light is some of the professors in the sociology and education departments. I definitely learned a lot during my time, but that degree was not worth the amount i spent on it (roughly $60k, after university scholarships- sticker price w/ room and board with have set me at about $200k). Now that I have some life experience I can honestly say that the degree was overpriced and not worth the debt I currently still have. The Jesuit education is nice, generally speaking, but the degree I received was practically useless and I had to seek opportunities outside of the department I was in because my skin color was proving to be an inconvenience for some. I had a voice teacher tell me that I needed to master a black dialect if I ever wanted to find work. Luckily, I was able to overcome incidents like this and have a solid career despite what I was told by faculty. read more

So it's doesn't have the best cafeteria food or the highest technology available, but God damn I loved me some LUC. I almost left after my freshman year, but after getting the guilt trip from my parents I decided to stay. I still thank them to this day. I had one of the best professors here & she made me decide to change my major to Sociology despite all the hype about not getting a job after graduation, being poor for the rest of my life, etc. etc. I also had a lovely TA (Miss. Meghan B) who convinced me to stick it out even if I felt it was a bit too tough. I took that class my freshman year & those words & encouragement are what kept me going through all 4 years. I think the professors truly care about their students & try to get to know each one personally. I think they are very accommodating if a situation,sickness, or something else arises & a students must miss class. I also think the classes were extremely interesting & am proud of all the knowledge I've gained from LUC. As if the academics aren't enough becoming a part of Chicago & it's hussle bussle lifestyle came hand-in-hand with my adjustment to Loyola. I made some of my greatest friends while at Loyola. Without the comfort of my school & fabulous Loyola friends, I doubt I'd still be in Chicago. Hurray for Loyola! Hurray for my professors! Hurray for my education! Even though my health wasn't great and I had withdrawn from my second semester, they still wanted me to pay up and go the next year. Dealing with financial aid and my adviser just made me realize that all they wanted was my money and they didn't care about me. The tuition is not worth the education here, simply put. The professors that I had and the staff that I dealt with did not care about me or my education. They simply saw me as a way to get money. My daughter transferred to Loyola after her freshman year at DePaul university where the dorm situation was bad- a bullying room mate from hell and the RA didn't do anything because she was friends with the room mate from hell. The RA's supervisor did nothing either. The residence hall system was very average, and the food inedible. Plus, my kid said that she really didn't feel challenged academically in the science department. A year later after the move to Loyola, my daughter feels at home and greatly appreciates the academics and atmosphere. She has had small classes, expert profs who are approachable, and many more options. She says she'd make the move all over again. The Loyola campus is beautiful, being right on Lake Michigan. The police/DPS presence on campus and around shows that the campus is relatively safe. The food options are numerous and plentiful for all types of eaters. And there is a nice residence hall system. My daughter's positive experience is compelling enough that my other soon-to-be high school grad is seriously considering Loyola over other respected academic institutions. read more

Like Al (below), I didn't log on today intending to rate my alma mater. But after reading the reviews below, well.... I work here. I live here. I am an alum. So is my fiancee. She has her Masters from here as well. We're getting married at Madonna this spring, as are some of our friends. Oh, and I'm in the law school downtown, too. Loyola is an amazing school with AMAZING students who impress and inspire me daily. It is a school that is true to its mission and welcoming to all. It is dedicated to self-improvement and recognizes that it does not excel at everything, and is making strides toward progress year-after-year. If you are an alum, I hope you'll come visit sometime. You'll find an even more gorgeous campus than you remember, getting spiffier by the day. (Despite all the commotion about losing the Jes Res field, the current students LOVE the IC. Oh Loyola. I share a neighborhood with you. While you are officially in Rogers Park- most of your students and dormitories reside in Edgewater. I used to have pretty positive thoughts towards you, but , alas, they have changed. You have been purchasing apartment buildings and turning them into dorms. No problem there, but- well, it has certainly increased the amount of trash, debris, and throw up that resides on the sidewalks. Yes, I had to mention that last piece due to the fact that my dog is attracted to it- I spend a great deal of our walks avoiding puke piles. It has gotten to the point where I avoid the streets by the dorms. You are a tax free- religious and educational institution. You contribute nothing to our tax base- yet you take quite a bit. I was surprised to find out that people actually Yelp about schools, but after reading some of the comments, I thought I would go ahead and add my experiences, in the hope they might help anyone at all in making a decision. I think it is most important for me to first clarify that I went to college strictly for the academics, and between working and commuting an hour, I didn't have a lot of time (or interest) in much outside of the classroom, like sororities and clubs. It is also important to point out how ridiculously expensive this school is. Please take that into consideration before you decide to go here, especially if you are in the minority, as I was, of students who had to pay for most of their tuition. That being said, I definitely made it work. I transferred from community college (a lot of students do this and it really is a no-brainer decision that will save you tens of thousands), and I commuted on the Red Line. I also got a scholarship that covered a good portion of my tuition, which is the reason I decided to go here. I think that the other Yelpers are correct in saying that, if you do not have a scholarship, you really can receive a quality education at a much more affordable school. I had wanted to go to Loyola for a very long time, though, and have never regretted my decision. I am also at their graduate campus, now. Although everyone has a bias, these were my favorite things about Loyola: 1) The Lakeshore campus is so beautiful throughout all seasons. I worked very hard for good grades and at points, I would become so stressed out that my mind felt like it was going to explode. I took long walks outside in between classes to clear my mind, and the views were therapeutic. I loved watching the waves roll in, the flowers bend in the breeze, and people walking their dogs. It really calmed me down. It may sound silly, but my walks outside are what I miss most about going here. 2) The school has several amazing professors (In political science, philosophy, and English). These people taught me so much and made an effort to challenge my thinking in positive ways. They really transformed me into a completely different student. I came to school less for the students and more for the intuition of their amazing staff. I always took advantage of speaking to them outside of class to make sure I understood exactly where my work needed improvement and what I was succeeding in. 3) They had an extremely helpful tutoring center in the Information Commons building, on the second floor. You can easily make an appointment and have a fresh set of eyes look over your work. It was a great benefit to me that I took advantage of for almost every paper. 4) The Information Commons building. My favorite place to hang out on campus. If you are studying and need complete silence, go to the third floor, where there is no talking allowed and computer access. This was so perfect for me. You can eat right at the computer, so I just brought my food with me, did my homework, and browsed the Internet during my breaks. It is open 24/7 too! This building is what brought me through finals. There is also a cafe, the library, and a large study room, where there is also no speaking allowed. There are three floors of computers, so you pretty much always have access to one. The building gives you a full view of the beautiful lake. There was really nothing better than that. -I don't want to fill my review with complaints, so I guess I will just mention a few things that I hated the most while going here: the annoying yuppie/hipsters who make up 80 percent of this school. Not going to lie, they drove me insane. This is where my bias comes in, so I won't drag this point any further, lol. I was there to learn, so I just ignored them. The other thing I hated was the amount of effort that I had to put into figuring out my own credits and graduation requirements because the staff in the advising office don't seem to know what they are doing. I really warn you, double check everything you are taking and do your own math on the credits, because these people will screw you in the end, if you rely on them. I went to several different people and even had physical proof in an email of one of them telling me false information on what I needed to graduate, and her response was, "oh, well I have no idea why I would have said that." I had to hold myself together every time I went into that office. I can think of so many things that I miss and loved about this school, but this review would go on for a very long time. If you work hard and get a portion of your tuition covered by a scholarship, I think you would enjoy this school, it all just depends what you are looking to get out of your experience. Getting the grades I wanted and affording everything was a challenge, but I made it work, and so can anyone else. Even if you do not go to this school, please take the train here or walk on over during the day to see how beautiful it all is. read more

Loyola is overshadowed by the heavy hitters in town (Northwestern, DePaul, U of C), but it's a good, no nonsense university. It's run by the Jesuits, who do not brook the kind of foolishness that gets Northwestern into the news. When I went here, it was known for being one of the few schools in the country that was consistently in the black. Loyola now owns much of Rogers Park. Loyola used to be primarily a commuter school, but it has concentrated on attracting out of state students for the past 25 years. Because it's a smaller school, students actually get a better education than at a lot of other place. When I was a student, I never had a TA as a primary teacher. Actually, I only had one TA over four years, and that was in a large psychology class. On the other hand, when I went to grad school, at a larger university, undergrads were lucky to see a full professor, especially in their first two years. I went to Loyola from 2004-2008 and also worked student jobs while I was there. Some of these reviews I'm questioning. I was a Forensic Science Major and I was in the first class that graduated (all 5 of us) in 2008 so things from that aspect have improved since I've been there. The professors I had (everything from Criminal Justice, Chem, Bio, etc), had so much field experience and knew their specialty well, which made their classes worth sitting in on. I loved how the curriculum was set up, having students take a variety of classes across the board and outside your major. Extracurricularly, I was involved in multiple organizations on campus and how successful and how much the organization did was really up to who was running the organization so sometimex, it was hit or miss I made friends who've stayed friends even long after graduation and what I learned in class has stuck with me. In terms of campus, I visited again recently and I love the changes that they've done. Granted, some of them weren't done when I was there or even started, but what is available now that wasn't there 5 years ago is amazing and I wish we had it back when I was a student. I say 4 stars though because of the amount of phone calls I get asking for money. When you're a resident, right out of med school (and even in med school for that matter), money isn't falling off trees into my lap. Not every class I wanted was offered at Oakton Community College the semester I commuted to school, so I also took a couple of classes at Loyola University. Loyola has a program for "returning students" that makes it easy to take classes on a flexible, part-time basis and get charged by the credit hour. I really appreciated this flexible program, which gave me access to all of the student facilities, and the ability it gave me to take some sort of odd classes not offered by the local CC, like latin. Loyola has a beautiful campus right by Lake Michigan, in an up-and-coming Chicago neighborhood. The campus is right on the lake and has some wonderful old buildings. Along with enjoying strolling around the campus, I really liked my classes. While my classmates ranged widely in ability level and dedication to school and on average weren't quite as exceptional as my Claremont College classmates, I had wonderful professors. In particular, the philosophy class I took at Loyola and that professor changed my life. I ended up majoring in philosophy because of that amazing class. Also, I am not Catholic, but I didn't find any particularly strong religious undertones at Loyola. The Jesuits are a very open-minded group who encourage critical thought rather than devout conformism to one religion. In the end Loyola was a little bit too close to home for me, and I happily moved on to the college where I was accepted mid-year after my part-time semester at Loyola. Had I not been from the general area, I could've seen myself enjoying being at Loyola for four years and receiving my bachelors from them. read more

This refers to the law school which I enrolled in last fall since I was so pleased with the education I got as an undergraduate way back when. I expect any law school to be competitive. But I also expect efficient, expert help with financial aid questions, and questions for the dean regarding the program and its people. The facilities have terrible ventilation so even in the winter the rooms are stifling. Although the administration was told of this, they didn't fix the problems. They figure they've got your money, so why should they bother helping you. There are much better law schools in the city. read more

A beautiful campus,rigorous curriculums, a top notch library...the neighborhood is even in better shape now because of Loyola than it was when I was a student here in the late 70s! Granted, one still needs to be vigilant when out, esp at night. Even so, the campus area is patrolled by both the Chicago Police and the Loyola Campus Police, who work hand-n-glove together. PLUS! If you demonstrate the capacity to achieve, Loyola will bend over backward to help you get grants, scholarships, loans; they'll make it happen for you. Check it out! read more

This review is for the Loyola Law School, which I blame for my less than prolific reviewing these past 19 months. I'm in the Masters of Jurisprudence of Health Law program. It has demanded so much time and energy. It has kicked my ass. I love it very much. The program is for health care delivery geeklets, as I. I've been in the biz since the U.S. uninsured rate was merely 12%. I recall a day before terms such as Clinical Integration were commonplace. Not so long that regulation was out of hand though. In five months, I will not be a lawyer. Yet, the Loyola program will make me further prepared to lead in the regulatory laden industry. There is enough of a need for non-attorneys with the ability to research topics of health law to educate us at the Masters level. I'm very glad for that. For the longest time, I figured I'd get an MBA, or maybe and MHA, but I wasn't excited at the possibility. This program would be perfect, except that my kids sometimes forget who I am. Just a few more months, kids...then we vacate somewhere fabulous. read more
