I had three other doctors (primary care, endocrinologist and interventional radiologist) recommend that I see Dr. Nasri for a cervical lymph node surgery. Therefore, I made an appointment which would have to be scheduled at least six weeks out (week of July, 2017). Once I got to the office, I was handed a package of 18 pages to complete (yes, I counted them). I started to fill them out and made notes on parts I had questions about or with which I did not agree. All of the paperwork content related to legal and privacy documents that protected Dr. Nasri, his staff, and other doctors from liability. The paperwork demanded that I agree to "Arbitration" in lieu of court in the event of malpractice. It also required me to sign away many of my personal/HIPPA privacy rights. They even had language that allowed my medical information to be used in research projects. Additionally, there was a form that would take away my, my child's, my heirs, or any other entity's rights in the event of a future and potential accident that had not even occurred.
I handed in my papers, with edits and/or without signing as I did not agree with or found the information to not apply to me. About 30 minutes later, I was called up by the office staff who handed back the pages I had written on and said that I had to fill out different forms. They stated that Dr. Nasri did not allow ANY modifications to, or writing on, the documents. They also would not answer questions or explain any of the items of the paperwork. Their only instructions were that I HAD to sign each and every page "as is" regardless of my agreement/disagreement and regardless of whether or not the paper applied to me. I could not even write "N/A" or "not applicable." If I did not sign them, I could not see the doctor.
After some debate, my gut instinct told me to run, not walk, away from this doctor. My thought is, "If this doctor needs SO much legal protection against liability, what has he done that he is hiding? Is he really that good of a doctor?" He may have dozens of photos of certificates on the walls proclaiming him to be the "Best of ..." but, I am not comfortable with a doctor who has the appearance of trying to prevent me from protecting my privacy, trying to hide malpractice or preventing a patient from protections in the event of malpractice. I checked with the NV medical malpractice board and could not find Dr. Nasri's name. However, it is my understanding that if a malpractice suit goes to arbitration only, it is not reported to the medical boards. I my opinion, this process is highly irregular, unprofessional, and possibly unethical. I would HIGHLY suggest going to a different doctor. read more
