After the pandemic, when things started picking back up, I went to several botanicas looking for warrior tool sets, meaning Ogun's Pot/cauldron, tools for inside including Ochosi's bow and arrow, and Osun. Excuse my "French" but the bullshit Botanica Oshun, in Harlem on 116, want $100!!!! others wanted $60+. It was as if they were trying to make back the money they couldn't make during the pandemic on the back of honest hard-working Priests, like myself and my brothers. I was super discouraged, but Alex had the set of warriors and other items, of better quality, for WAY LESS. Not only that but he recognized me as an Oluo and formally saluted me by touching the floor and saying "Iboru, Iboya" in front of all the other patrons! I could not believe it. An actual botanica owner who not only knows how to salute but, after talking, is also an Olosha (Osha iniciate)! I swear this is not an ego thing, believe me anyone, who really knows me, will tell you this type of attention mortifies me, but it was humbly appreciated. If not for the fact that I don't drive and I live in the Bronx, I would frequent his botanica way more often!!

just an update since i wrote about this shop back in 2023. max and his shop are magical. from the…read moreminute you walk in and meet max you will feel his presence. he sells wonderful items that are hand picked by max. he is so knowledgeable and caring and really takes the time to listen to your needs and he will direct you to the proper item(s) that will be best for you. he has lots of classes and a big beautiful peaceful backyard that is such a hidden treasure. i highly recommend anyone to visit and shop at his very special store. you probably wouldn't want to leave once you go in there as max is so filled of amazing stories and ideas to help and make you feel better.

This situation enraged me…read more I may be a witch but I cannot levitate. The "ramp" out front of the store is so steep that anyone who uses a wheelchair is going to tip over. This is dangerous and possibly a lawsuit waiting to happen. Am I wrong to expect some love and acceptance from my fellow embracers of magic? Because there's more than enough room for an appropriate sized ramp here. I ended up sitting outside in the freezing cold for 40 minutes, while friends bought a candle and some other blessed things. Eventually the cold got to be so bad that I fled to a nearby library to defrost. Inside the store are more laughable attempts at compliance, except here half the way-too-steep ramp is blocked by boxes like you've entered a rummage sale. Why even act like you accept people who use wheelchairs? Such inappropriate treatment of our safety is outrageous. Do you want us to fall out our chairs and break ourselves further? Do you want an ambulance to come? Maybe the cops? Cuz when someone does get hurt here I can't imagine this shop is going to survive the payout for the hospital bills. DO BETTER

My guess is the sales did not offset the high rents. It is likely that this Queens location might come under a similar pressure. It is a large store, well-stocked and clean. The service is friendly but I find their knowledge of the inventory is lacking. Their collection of books, especially the Amar Chitra Katha comic books that I was raised on, is quite unique. Unlike with a grocery store, this is an episodic business and customers visit the store infrequently. But if I am in the market for Indian merchandise, I will be sure to check out Butala. An excellent resource for New Yorkers, although I realize the Manhattan location was too good to be sustainable.
