The bartender Dominic was really friendly and gave us pointers on things to do in the area. The breakfast buffet is OK, it was a bit overpriced but they had a good variety of food including breads, eggs, yogurt, chia, etc. The staff was very polite. We even met the manager, I think his name was Manny, and he was super friendly. He definitely wanted to ensure our stay was a pleasant one and he would acknowledge us every time he saw us. We will absolutely be back when we visit again.

Served up in the lovely…read moresurroundings of their Alvar Bar (all subtle grey tones with deep flashes of plush red furnishings and large over-sized lampshades) we chose to sit right up in the corner of the tinted floor-to-ceiling windows (the hotel has a unusual pointed glass frontage more noticeable from the outside) giving us a view of the length of the cafe. Granted the view of the roadworks outside wasn't great but there was plenty to look at when the 3 trays of food arrived! Especially while sipping a little Prosecco. On the top shelf of our 3-tier tray we had delicious skinny sandwiches with salmon and cream cheese, Coronation (we think) chicken and ham salad. The inside-out cucumber rolls were a great take on the traditional great British afternoon cucumber sarnies but the super-tasty bit was the oozing Welsh rarebit served as a pot of gooey cheese with crusty bread to dip in - YUM! The next tray was for the scones. Wholemeal and regular served with Jam and Clotted Cream (although we pretty much used up all the cream on 2 scones). And finally the sweet tray. A take on a walnut whip and a jaffa cake were served with a treacle tart (all in 2-bite size portions) however my favourite was the Eton mess - it was like eating a cloud; a light, fluffy, sweet that melted away in my mouth. This was topped off with a pretty fine selection of teas or coffee, and if you wanted, you could also choose from a selection of cocktails (Gin & Tonic served with cucumber / Earl Grey Martini / Glass of Veuve Clicquot). The High Tea costs £15.95 per person and the cocktails are extra. I'd say it is well worth but my top tip is just DON"T EAT BEFORE. There is a lot of food to get through. I'd say this is ideal for girls that lunch, a birthday, hen weekend or a treat for your mom. High Tea is available Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons and Bank Holiday Mondays. Price was on the expensive side of reasonable but we definitely had decent value for money. The location is lovely, the view out across the hills and farms is serene and tranquil. Our order had 6 kids meals, all of which were well received and eaten with gusto. The batter on the fish was particularly light and crispy, the fish full of flavour and succulent, not dried-out as so often is the case. Personally, I very much enjoyed a wild mushroom tagliatelle which was cooked to perfection, the creamy sauce punctuated with all sorts of interesting mushrooms. A cheese board to finish my meal with three interesting cheeses, a quince jelly and pressed fig cake was very tasty, no dull cheddar or red-liecester, but three engaging and palate-warming cheeses accompanied by light crackers. Others in the group enjoyed the salmon on risotto, fish cakes, pork belly and a classic roast beef with Yorkshire pud. Nobody had any complaints, we'd go back if we were in the area and if you're close by, would definitely recommend you search it out. The building which would normally double up as an inn / hotel is undergoing a large refurb and refit project, yet still remains lovely to look at and there was no disruption to our meal at all. We ordered five dishes from the main course and only 'one' was acceptable, the others were extremely bland. At the end of the meal (we left most of the food because it was just terrible) we spoke to the waiter and told him what we thought. He said he'd ask the manager to come over, we waited approximately 10-15 minutes before he came, just shows how much he cared. When we spoke to him about the food not being flavoursome, he seemed to get the word 'flavoursome' mixed up with 'spicy' mmmm. I said no flavoursome is 'tasty' not asking for 'spicy'. His reply was if you told us at the beginning he would have made sure it was more 'spicy'. He just did not get it, I told him all the food was bland, no flavour. I told him, I don't see why I should ask for good quality flavoursome (not particularly spicy) food this should always be standard practise I would have thought. We paid for our meal in full, was not looking for a reduction on the bill but tried giving them some constructive criticism, they just were not interested in the least. Would certainly not recommend this restaurant it's just far too big. Personally I feel they need to have less customers and concentrate on giving better 'quality food'.
