I'm happy to report that The Davenport is firmly in the middle category. We had tasty fish and chips that weren't too bad at all and came in at about £5 each for fish, chips and mushy peas - great value if not as good as somewhere like Fosters. I'd go here again out of convenience as it's probably the best within walking distance and the staff were friendly but there's definitely better if you're prepared to jump in the car.

The pies are cooked to perfection and as for the fish, battered to perfection!! The cafe area is clean and heated and although their isn't much space on match days, you will always find a seat.

We bought 2 cod and a large chips with 2 large mushy peas for £11 which seemed really good value and when I got them home and on the plate the look, smell and consistency of them looked like it was a good choice. The taste overall was good if the chips were a little undercooked for my liking but i definitely will go back with it being so close, even if Fosters fish and chips is on a different planet in terms of quality and overall pleasure to eat.

It is on a main road in the town, but there is a small outdoor seating area, which is reasonably pleasant, and a car park around the back to make up for the lack of street parking. The staff were friendly and the service was reasonably fast, especially as I visited on a Saturday, where they seemed to be quite busy, and also taking a number of telephone orders, and delivery orders. After hearing of their gluten-free options with a dedicated gluten-free fryer, I was excited to try out this place, and while there were some positives for sure, I couldn't help but have been left with a taster of bitter disappointment. The menu here is pretty large, as well as the standard chippy options, they have a variety of options including burgers, curries and more, this is where I find chippies tend to go wrong, they have too many options and just mess up on the basic staples, which seems to have been the case here. I ordered the gluten-free cod and chips, with chips, gravy and sausage, which all could be made gluten-free - so far so good. I was angry however to look at the menu board and notice the gluten-free menu is much higher than the regular menu, I can get gluten-free costs more to make, but when you're talking having to pay more for every single item, it adds up, surely the gravy would have been the same anyway? I wasn't a big fan of the packaging either, I'm used to my fish and chips being served in a box, however, everything was in separate, paper packaging, which not only made it much more difficult to eat and unwrap everything, but the environmental damage and so much waste is frankly a disgrace. I did find the food overall to be really greasy and salty, while the batter was very good for gluten-free, it felt like the fish was half battered, and only really battered around the edges. The chips were also really soggy and almost inedible, while the gravy was a little bland. The sausage wasn't too bad, a little meatier than the average chippy sausage, but that isn't bad. I really wanted to like this place, it has a lot of positives, and the food did look good, but from charging a gluten-free tax to wasteful packaging to issues with the quality of the food, mainly arising from it being far too salty, and soggy, I wouldn't return. 2*

Chips were decent, not the best, but the fish was definitely the star of the show, cooked to perfection in a light, not overly oil-saturated batter. The kind lady behind the counter let me try a dollop of their gravy (it was wonderful)! Such a gem with good quality food in a no frills package! I instead order a battered sausage and some chips. the ambiance was terrible with a thick clammy smell as if there was no airflow for years. Alright food but wouldn't consider going back until they figure out their problems and get their priorities straight and hire new faster less judging eyeing staff who clearly did not like my appearance and hope they figure out what the smell is and that they remove it immediately. really a shame about those because the food was great and five stars just wasn't worth the wait and the smell.
