Yemisir wot with hair in it
    Lauren S.

I love Ethiopian food and I've tried many places in the LA area. I placed my order on postmates after looking at reviews. One of the reviews stated that they found a hair in their food and provided a picture. I was thinking this was hopefully a one-off. After waiting to receive my food (I ordered yemisir wot, tomato fitfit, and awaze lamb tibs) I opened the yemisir wot container and saw a very obvious hair in my food. It seemed like it should have been easily catchable before closing and packing into the bag. I no longer want to finish the rest of my food since this seems like a common occurrence. Very disappointing. If you order from here, CHECK YOUR FOOD before eating.

Veggie Vegan Sampler Platter Freshly Squeezed Mango Juice Lentil Samosa

What started as missing my exit and having to turn around on the freeway, led to me looking for food spots close by because I was way too hungry to finish the hour commute back home without something to eat. I looked on Yelp and saw that there was an Ethiopian restaurant close by, and I have been craving Ethiopian food for months so I decided to check it out. First of all the spot is located with plenty of street parking a few tables inside if you want to eat inside, and the place + the bathroom is very clean!! I was talking with one of the employees who goes by Matthew, he was so kind and incredibly helpful and attentive. I did not get a chance to talk with the other employee due to language barrier but her smiles were incredibly comforting! I believe this is a family run business. I started with fresh mango juice, which I will probably think about for the rest of summer, it was not too sweet, perfectly refreshing. 9.5/10 I got the vegan platter for two, and it definitely feeds two because I was starving, ate till I was stuffed, and there was still over half the platter left. For $18 that's an incredible value that you just do not see anymore. All the food was fresh, the ingredients were, distinct and complementary, I absolutely loved it. 10/10 I also got the lentil Samosa, it was good, but I wish I tried the ground beef Samosa! The lentils were cooked perfectly, and the Samosa was stuffed to the brim, but with all the veggies on my veggie platter, I was craving meat and I'm excited to try the beef Samosa next time. Lentil Samosa - 8/10 i'm excited to go back already, definitely check this place out, it deserves your business and all regards.

I picked up two orders to go: the special combo vegetarian entree platter ($18) and the awaze fish tibes ($15). The special combo vegetarian entree platter was quite good, the collard greens tasted especially fresh and the shiro wot was creamy and smooth. I enjoyed the beets as well. The only issue was the yellow split peas, which were undercooked and kind of hard. The awaze fish tibes were very good! The berbere sauce was nice and had a bit of heat, very flavorful. The portion size was generous and the taste of the fish was good. The injera was good and could be even more sour.

S/O and I shared the vegan combo and dereq tibs, a pitcher of their infused water, an Ethiopian cream coffee, and a glass of palm tree (their arnold palmer). The food was fantastic. I loved every bite we had, especially the gomen (braised greens), cabbage and carrot, and the kik alicha. The dereq tibs, though? That was AMAZING. Tender beef, sweet stewed onion, the perfect amount of spice from the serranos. I loved that the dish is accompanied by senafich (a spicy, horseradish-y mustard) and mitmita (a DELICIOUS chili powder that I want to put on everything lol). The beverages were delicious, I love an arnold palmer and this one is probably the best i've ever had with their spiced tea. Their coffee was decadent and strong and perfectly balanced. And the banana split! I am not usually one for dessert but I knew I needed to try this and I'm SO glad I did. A symphony of textures and complex flavors. We may or may not have used our fingers to get the last bits from the dish. The place itself is like a little oasis from the hustle and bustle of the strip mall outside. Vibey music, beautiful furniture and decor, and all attention paid to the little details. Can't wait for them to reopen so we can come back!! Parking - strip mall was crowded, but street parking wasn't too bad to find.

The vegan combo came with a bunch of flavorful things like stewed red lentils, stewed yellow split peas, Ethiopian salad, et cetera. I'm not vegan, but I would have been more than satisfied with just the vegan combo as it was delicious and filling. The doro wat - spicy braised chicken with a hard-boiled egg - was tender and tasty. I thought the beef dish was even better. The beef pieces practically melted in my mouth. And everything went great with the injera, which had a spongy texture that I found absolutely pleasing. The service was also wonderful. Before our meal, our server performed a hand-washing ceremony with rose water. And after we finished eating, we were presented with wet towels to clean our hands. Throughout lunch, our server kept our glasses of water filled. This place is a small intimate spot with very few tables, so reservations are strongly recommended.

When we got the bill, I was shocked to see that he had charged us for four (4) entrees !!!-- an extra $54 to add tofu to our plates! When we brought this up to the waiter, he didn't apologize or act as if anything was wrong, so I spoke to the owner, Genet -- and she was equally unapologetic! Her solution was for us to throw away one of the two containers of leftovers. I felt as if the waiter had been intentionally deceitful -- and when Genet backed him up, it seemed as if she was in on it, too.. (Apart from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?) The food was good and the atmosphere was good -- Just be careful if they ask if you want to add tofu to your plate.

We arrived around 6:45 on Saturday and didn't get our food until nearly 8:30 and had to manage a hungry four-year-old during this time. The restaurant was busy but there was only one server (more are definitely needed!) and most infuriating is that tables of Ethiopian diners would receive their food first despite arriving and ordering significantly after non-Ethiopian diners. If Merkato wants to discriminate against the non-Ethiopian diners who make up a core of their clientele, they should know we will gladly take our business to other restaurants on the block. Although the food was quite good when it finally did arrive, the service and the overall shabby condition that restaurant has deteriorated into over the years makes it unappealing to return to.
