It took about 40-45 min for our entree dish to come out which we thought was a little excessive given we only ordered one entree to share for two. We were also not told the entree was going to take 40+ minutes. I also noticed my credit card statement was charged an additional $1.25. I know the amount is small but it is the principle of it. Seemed odd and a bit shady -- not sure if this was an unstated credit card fee but be sure to check your statements and get a printed receipt. I've been to half a handful of Ethiopian restaurants. I don't think the food here is bad, but it didn't wow me. We got the veggie combo ($28) with injera. I'm used to the injera being on the sour side but thought theirs was pretty mild. The food took 30-40 minutes to come out, possibly because we sat outside. The appetizer was yummy but on the pricier end ($5). It also took 15 minutes for that to come out. Customer service was lacking. They weren't friendly when taking our order, and when she put down our drink, it looked like she was going to spill it. The water also tasted like tap and had a weird scent to the cup. The only time they were efficient was when they came to ask us to pay, although we didn't even finish our meal yet. Personally I don't think I would come back based on my experience. I came with a friend after seeing this among the top recommended Ethiopian restaurants in LA after missing Ethiopian food from my college town. The seating is exclusively indoors and there's quite a bit of it; we came by on a weekday for lunch and just walked in without a reservation but even on a random weekday lunch there were people inside so I imagine you'd need a dinner reservation here especially on the weekends. Metered parking is available on Fairfax and we were lucky to snag a spot without any trouble, however, during more busy times I can see this being an issue. There are side residential streets off Fairfax I would advise for this if you wanted to try for free parking, otherwise you'd be forced to use a paid parking lot (or alternatively the new Metro D line and walk over!). The only downside/upside depending how you look at it was that it took a bit of effort to summon a waitress again when we would run out of water or injera but this wasn't a huge problem. Super Messob Exclusive 5/5, SOOOOO delicious!! This was exactly what I was craving and man was I glad to have it! We were only 2 people and ate until we were stuffed AND had enough for both of us to take home 2 portions, making me think this is enough for 4 adults. read more

I visited Messob Ethiopian Restaurant for the first time over the weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday. I've driven through the area before but had never actually stopped to explore, so this was a great introduction especially since it's my first Ethiopian restaurant in LA. The space itself feels like a small museum, filled with artwork and photos of historical figures and scenes from Ethiopia, which really adds to the experience. We were a fairly large group, and the staff was incredibly accommodating. The owner even took time to recommend dishes based on our party size. We ordered both the vegetarian and meat combination platters, along with traditional Ethiopian coffee. Everything was delicious, and the dining experience was genuinely fun and communal. The staff were kind, attentive, and welcoming throughout. The food was amazing, and the value is hard to beat. The coffee, though, might have been my favorite part. This was my first experience with Ethiopian food. I had heard about the bread and did enjoy it, however, I was surprised to find it to have a sour note. I personally do not love vinegar or sour, and it was present in most of the food; however, when I experienced something cultural, I try to judge it as I feel it should be experienced by someone without a particularized palette like myself. The staff was very courteous, however, it was a bit confusing to order because I did the combo and it only allowed certain numbers. However, I was assisted in this and pleased with the resolve. I would recommend this as a cultural experience, however, I have no base of comparison to other Ethiopian food. So we went for a family party. It was our first time in awhile being in the Fairfax district to dine out. We had a wonderful experience. From the easy, open parking in the back to the food and then ambiance! The people that served us were spectacular. They made sure that we had everything we needed for our special night to be perfect. The food; especially the yellow/red lentils, the lamb in the dark red sauce, to the potatoes with cabbage and carrots were fresh and delicious. The white fish had a crispy skin and succulent butter taste. The Injera/Taita was the perfect texture and the taste was relevant and just right to taste. We were greeted with the honey wine and the start of our meal that was served in vase like glasses and we ended our feast with the infamous strong, fragrant Ethiopian coffee. First and last time I eat Ethiopian food. About as bad as it gets. For $25 bucks, the Dorowat is mostly four or five of these Ethiopian thick/floppy honeycomb pin-holed like pancakes sauced up to the brim with an unpleasant sour/spicy taste. It's not the spice I can't handle, it's the nauseating sour spice pairing The chicken is scant -- two small drummies (wing style). To justify $25 for this is highway robbery. Literally, it's two casual bite-sized drummies with a bunch of bread. RIdiculous. The experience didn't quite bode well with my stomach. I felt quite sick immediately thereafter and had to soup up Tums and Pepto Bismol to aid in the digestive process. I got the feeling the meat was semi-rancid. Why else would they douse the drummies in a sour/spice deluge that is more than overkill? IDK? read more

How have I never reviewed Messob?! This is my go to restaurant for Ethiopian food. First off it's so incredibly good and second...they have vegan options. I know there's a restaurant right next door that's fully vegan but my husband isn't vegan so I try and throw in restaurants that offer both when we go out. The ambiance is cozy and inviting with dark wood furniture, cushions, warm lighting, artwork and decor. The service has always been great. They're very on top of it as far watching to see if you're done reading the menu or if there's anything you might need during your meal. We usually order the samosas which are vegan friendly and I get the vegetarian platter. It's named vegetarian but it's all vegan. The platter is a combination of all their vegan dishes....lentils, carrots, potato and cabbage all served on top of injera bread. They also give you a basket of injera bread and if you need more all you need to do is ask. But it's the most delicious flavors and very filling and satisfying. They also offer beer, wine and honey wine. Parking is fairly easy on this part of Fairfax. If you haven't been I would say to definitely check them out. We usually take out of town friends and family here and they just love it. read more

This was my first time having Ethiopian food and though I think the food was good and I had a great time with my friends, I'm not quite sure it was a 5 star experience. I can't quite figure out why but I'll give a few more details. I went on a Wednesday night for a birthday dinner, not too crowded but a good chunk of tables were full for midweek. We had a reservation since we were a party of 6 so no issues there. The table we were given was very cool. It was a lower table with chairs at compatible heights which, though not super comfortable, allowed for us to reach the food comfortably. The service was good, they were very accommodating. We ordered a large vegetarian platter and then two meats - chicken breast which was chopped up into chunks with various spices and the tibs which was a beef dish. Everything tasted good, but I was a bit underwhelmed. I guess I just expected a different flavor profile or more spice and was just a bit let down. I also wasn't a big fan of the bread they provided (it's a texture thing), but despite this it was overall a decent dining experience. I'm giving 4 stars because though I really can't pinpoint any significant complaints, I don't believe it was as good an experience as some or the others I've had.
