I ordered beef tacos and my girlfriend ordered a burrito. We both got cokes and to my surprise they came in old school glass bottles, which i liked, i think glass keeps in the taste better than cans or plastic. They were both very good. The tacos were smaller than I'm used to. However, that's not a bad thing as I don't need big tacos anyway lol. The red and green sauces taste great. The waitress was very nice. The place itself was pretty small and a little plain inside other than a few decorations hanging from the ceiling and oddly enough a pretty recent WWE poster. As is Hopewell Custard, Lucys is cash only. Yet there's a (pain in the butt) ATM on the end of the building, so you can get money there if you don't have it. I will start my review by saying that I originally did not like Lucy's and almost never went back there after my first experience. I'm a huge fan of Las Palmas in Bridgeton, and it seemed that Lucy's just didn't compare. Since then, my thoughts have changed so much, to the point where now I give Lucy's a solid 4 and a half stars. Since yelp won't let me do half stars, and I want this place to succeed I'm putting down 5. To start, why I originally was not about to go back: the enchiladas. I'm just not a fan of them here. They're not terrible, but as I said, las palmas does them better (not to mention offers mole which Lucy's doesn't) and I just kept comparing the two. If it was just for that first experience, this may be a 2-3 Star review. But now here's why it's 5 stars. The tacos. Their tacos are amazing. I've had the Al Pastor (spicy pineapple pork), beef, pulled pork, chorizo, chicken, and steak. They're all amazing. Cilantro, onion, and lime. All a taco needs. And 6 tacos for 10 bucks? You can't beat it. I go there all the time and I'm pretty much a regular with the tacos. I've switched it up and had a Torta once in a while and they're good too. Awesome soft bread and huge! The servers are friendly and nice too. A real family business. Go support this place! (Just maybe go to Palmas for your enchiladas) read more

Customer service is essential any business. If this restaurant understood this we'd return, but over a few dollars they've lost local customers. We ordered the appetizer sampler(which had a taco with it in which he questioned as if we wanted cilantro on it. We said yes but no onions), I got the fajita trio(beef, chicken,shrimp), with no onions, my husband order 2 burrito's 1 for there and 1 to go. The taco had onions on it, no biggie. My husband's burrito was "okay". My fajitas came with no onions in a barely sizzling plate with the shrimp on the top(still completely in the shell, but not touching the plate). I moved the shrimp to the side and made a fajita, after eating that I went to peel the shrimp. I was amazed as how any "cook" would serve such blatantly "dead" shrimp. I tried to eat 2(they are in the napkin)the other 6 shrimp are on the plate. We made the server aware of the overcooked or reheated inedible shrimp. When my husband went up to pay the check he asked "aren't you going to make an adjustment for the overcooked shrimp?" He was told that if they had been undercooked, yes, but there's nothing he can do for them being overcooked. Whaaat? I have never heard suuh ch a comment before! No one asked to comp the entire check, just an adjustment for your poor cooking techniques! For a place serving just mediocore Mexican food, those uncredited few dollars will end your business! Beef/steak bistek tacos are excellent. The tamales are great. Overall, I would say this place is good, but not great. Limited menu, but very reasonably priced. Same as what you would expect to pay at Taco Bell for 2 people, but this is the real deal. The beans are a little soupy every time, but 1 time it had little chunks of hot dog cut up in it. I didn't ask for this, nor was it mentioned. I've eaten a lot of mexican food from authentic businesses and eaten at a lot of mexicans friends homes, but I've never seen any of them do this, so I thought it was weird. For being located in Hopewell, it's the best, most authentic mexican food you can get w/o going into Bridgeton. For a lot of small towns in south Jersey; Quinton, Alloway, Greenwich, Upper Deerfield, Shiloh, etc it's probably also the closest authentic Mexican food you can get. I would recommend to anyone to give it a try at least once, you may be pleasantly surprised. read more

I ordered the chicken fajitas and was not impressed. Onion, peppers, chicken, and a white cheese on top along with three tortillas, which was a large sized portion. Nothing else was served with it such as tomatoes, salsa, lettuce, sour cream, etc. The chicken was not very flavorful. I ordered a water and was served and charged ($1.50 I believe) for a bottled water. I expect to be warned of a charge on water in the US prior to getting to the cash register. When I spoke with the server about the menu, the server did not seem to understand my questions and just answered "yes". The interior of the restaurant was very simple with plastic tablecloths and not much decor. Perhaps I should have ordered the tacos instead. read more

For Bridgeton which is full of Mexica restaurants, Lucy's stands out. They are family run, and are always attentive. I love that they have menu add one that will surprise you. Last time they had goat that was tasty. The portions are large and always made to order. I highly recommend. Lucy's Mexican Restaurant is such a great place to eat. We love their food! This is a great addition to Hopewell so you don't have to go into town. Their tacos are always full and delicious. The staff is very sweet and friendly. They have many different choices on the menu and if you don't know what it is they will explain. Lucy's is a safe environment and family friendly. If you're thinking about trying Lucy's Mexican restaurant in Hopewell THINK TWICE. we've been there many times, but tonight was the worst experience ever!! The server was new and very inexperienced...had no knowledge of the menu. My food came out without my side of rice and beans and only my fiance's side of rice came out for him, we asked where's the rest of our food??? Turns out the server gave it to another table that came in after us....they ordered the same thing but she only put 1 order in. She never came to tell us what happened. I took his side which was ice cold and I found a hair on the plate!! As I'm eating my enchiladas I find pieces of bloody viens in the chicken!!! At that point I was done! So I told the head server about it and the best they could offer was to take 10% off!! I ate less than a 1/4 of my meal and did NOT take the rest home. Friendly little place with excellent food. We probably go to dinner here once a week: the food is great and it's inexpensive, simple, and casual. Great place for take-out lunch, or a casual dinner with BYOB. We also went once for breakfast, which everyone loved. Huevos a la mexicana was spot-on, and one person in our party ordered a custom plate of eggs to approximate huevos rancheros (which isn't on the menu)... My rating is a ZERO. I went for lunch, the table and floor were dirty. And flies flying around. Took a while to get waited on because the two young girls were busy talking to each other. I asked the waitress a few questions about the green and red sauces for the enchiladas. She told me the red was the spiciest and the green wasn't spicy, just a little bit. So we pick the green, we proceed to eat it and our mouths are burning, also my son starting gagging, there was something hard and round in his mouth from the food. He also had trouble after spitting that out with whatever else was in the chicken he was eating. He almost threw up at the table. So the other girl (not our waitress) comes over and asks if there's a problem. So I tell her and show her what was in the food. And I also told her what the girl said about the sauces, she laughed and said she told you that. Then walked away. A few minutes later our waitress appears and says let me get you something else to eat, so I hesitated, and she said I won't charge you for this stuff, let me get you something else. So I agreed to just order plain cheese quesadillas. She takes the other plates and comes back later with the quesadillas. We had also ordered guacamole. It was inedible. There was little to no avacado, and way too much onion, cilantro and tomato. The cilantro was big leaves, not chopped and so over powering. I didn't say anything about it but I figured if they were observant they would realize we hadn't eaten it after each trying it. At no point does anyone ever come back to us. The two young girls see us done and waiting, finally I ask, do we need to come up there to pay. She says yes, so now I go up and the girl tells me the amount. Which seemed awfully high considering the problem and she told me she wasn't going to charge me. She says no I have to charge you for at least one, so I said the other girl told me she wasn't going to charge us because we couldn't eat it. So now the owner comes out with an attitude right away asking what the problem was. I proceed to explain everything which she was clearly not listening and ignorant to my complaints and issues. She proceeded to tell me she'd be losing money if she didn't charge me and that it's not her problem we didn't like the food. So again I try to explain to her, her employee gave me wrong information and the other girl knew it as well, twice, 1st about how hot the sauces are and 2nd about not charging me. I told her she insisted on me ordering something else when I didn't want to at that point. So I said when people come in and ask questions they should be given the proper answers and she again said it's not her problem if I don't understand how hot the sauces are. I gave her more money than she deserved and told her good luck, in which she bragged about being open for 5 years. And I had some other older female that worked there following me out the door as if giving the impression I needed to be escorted out. I was very reasonable and calm for most of the time but that woman's ignorance frustrated me. How she can run a business and make excuses for employees, who don't give proper information and service and another who sits there laughing about it is beyond me. She needs to check her arrogance at the door and learn how to communicate properly with customers. She clearly is not interested in making her business desirable enough for customers to return.
