Very nice staff. However, Luma definitely gets the "Most Expensive Dental Office Award". Watch out for the we're going to send you home with a goodie bag (toothpaste, floss, etc) and dental rinse. They never say the rinse is $36- make it sound as though it's a freebie. read more

I have been here twice. The first time was 6 months ago Both times, I was not called back until 15-20 minutes after my appointment time. The appointments take a long time. After waiting, I was offered the whole head x ray scan. No thanks Then the dental hygienist made my 6 months appointment and wanted to take the bite wing x rays again. I had them done 6 months ago on my first visit here. I told her this and she said. Let me check. Yeah. Maybe do that before you try to do them again and my insurance refuses to pay. She cleaned my teeth in about 20 minutes. Now I am sitting here 10-15 minutes (so far, I am sitting in the chair as I type this) for a dentist to check me out. I asked for the fluoride varnish, but apparently, I have to see the dentist before she does that. Look, if you have lots of time and like waiting, then this place is probably fine for you. Unfortunately, I have to give this business only one star. While they started out good, they quickly declined in both service and care. I work a very busy job and had to reschedule a number of times due to this they flagged me. This means I have to call day of and if they can fit me in they will see me. This is awful customer service. I will never go back and I have advised all family/friends to do the same. Update: so I was called by Luma Dentistry and was set up for another appointment here and promptly walked in to a scheduled appointment they made for me and was again turned away. I went to Dr Gray for all-on-4 implants. "HUGE MISTAKE" originally I was in seeing one of the regular dentist there and I was having problems with my upper teeth and repairs were no longer working very well and I got in a discussion with him about implants. He got with Dr Gray and got a price. Then we had a talk about the best choice of material in which I wanted mine to be made from and I told him Zirconia. He got with Dr Gray and got the price and we sat up an appointment with Dr Gray. Upon talking to Dr Gray he told me I didn't want Zirconia that I should use acrylic they were much better, he said Zirconia would break. So using his professional advice I did what he said. To make a long story very short that is not the material you want. the temps stayed in repair a lot due to breaking in half or tooth falling out. Finally I got the real ones and over a period of about a year I had a tooth fall out 4 or 5 times. I would have to go back have them removed and reinstall my old temporaries which hurt my gums. I would have to wear them for a week or 2 and go back and get the so called good ones put back in after they were repaired. This got very old and he was getting mad at the manufacturer in Tuscaloosa and kept telling me they were going to have to redo them if they didn't quit breaking. Finally after the last repair which was like I said 4 or 5 times they seemed to be ok but less than a year later another one fell out and every time I tried to get a appointment I couldn't. about 6 months later I got one and this whole time I had a front tooth missing. When I finally got this appointment he told me I was going to have to pay $500 to repair it keep in mind this is the same thing that had happened several times before. I be paid $23,500.00 for these top teeth and now they are worthless I'm not paying anymore for a problem they obviously can't fix. If he had given me the Zirconium like I ask for this problem would have never have happened. He's going to try and say I wasn't wearing my tooth protector at night which is not true they are basically plastic and they just don't stand up well against my regular lower teeth. My dentist that I'm using now said what I have in my mouth is the same thing they use as the temps because they're cheap, but the Zirconium he lied saying they would break. My present dentist said he had never had one to break that was made out of Zirconium. So if you're brave enough to go there at least make sure to force him to give you Zirconium unless you want to waste $23,500.00 read more

I am a person that never writes reviews but this was an experience that deserves telling the public (WARNING long post) I had the experience of my original dentist retiring and needed a new dentist. I have Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance so I looked for local providers. I live in the Bessemer/Helena area so Luma Denistry in McCalla was in my general area. I chose this office. I arrived on 03/20/2023 an expected a general examination and cleaning. I expected my out of pocket cost to be less than $100 considering I get two "preventative cleanings" every 6 months which I pay through my dental insurance (Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield). I arrived at the office at 8 am and the lobby had probably 10-15 patients (this become relevant later). The wait was not long--I was taken back in about 15 minutes. In the initial interview x-rays were taken as well as a general assessment of my mouth health. Because I have regularly went to the dentist, my teeth are in very good shape. I have to relay that upon my original Dentist retiring, he told me I had a receding gum line and would want to watch this in the future. I told this information to the hygeinist that looked at my teeth. BIG MISTAKE on my part. The hygeinist recommended a deep cleaning. So here is where things got financially interesting. Total cost for this procedure. A whooping $1,719!!! So how much did they expect me to cover out of my pocket? $739! The dentist office divided this into $364.15 and $374.85 (Right and Left side of my mouth). So by now it is about 10 AM. I've been at the dentist for nearly 2 hours. I've taken a day off work. I regret to say but I paid the $374.85 for the left side of my mouth to get the deep cleaning done. They stated they would do the right side in about another week. If I could go back in the past, I would of had NOTHING done. As I stated, I was supposed to walk out with a bill less than $100 because I have Dental insurance that comes out of my pay check every two weeks. So after getting home, I canceled that second appointment. I am seeking a new dental office. What I would say about arriving and so many patients being present at 8 AM, it was a money generating mill. I was a number to make a buck off of. I DO NOT RECOMMEND LUMA DENISTRY. Find a Denistry with a more Family atmosphere. read more

When I was 21 years old I had never had a cavity and always had a healthy smile. I was told I needed to have my wisdom teeth removed by a dentist who verbally abused me and humiliated me in front of the whole dental office the day of my extractions because I told him I was nervous. The experience was so traumatizing to me that I quit going to the dentist for 15 years until I started having pain in a tooth and needed it extracted from an untreated cavity. At this time I was diagnosed with periodontal disease. I went for one deep root cleaning and never returned. It was a time in my life where I was in a mentally and physically abusive relationship and really didn't care if I lived or died. I did not take care of my smile and I regret that. I was suffering from severe depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Eventually, I was able to break free of the toxic relationship and received treatment for my mental and emotional troubles and I have a wonderful purpose filled life now. About 18 months ago I noticed that the enamel on my teeth were disappearing starting at my gum and my teeth were very brittle and started cracking. I decided I had to do something and went to a dentist and was told that none of my teeth could be saved. So I started doing my own research and talking to others who had similar dental problems. It took me over 18 months and seeing 6 dentist before I met Dr. Amanda at Luma Dentistry in McCalla and after talking with her and explaining my past experiences and also my fears and what I could afford and was in my budget, I knew within the first 10 minutes that this was who I was waiting on to create my new smile. She sensed my anxiety and instead of rushing me out like I was just another number she listened without judgement and sincere concern for my dental health and over all well being. I had a 5pm appointment and I'm sure she was tired and ready to go home but she let me talk without rushing to get me out and took the time to answer all of my questions and made me feel like I was the most special patient she had. She was real. She was honest with me and told me I could get a partial but with the extent of damage I had to my gums and teeth that it would probably only last 2 years before those teeth deteriorated even with treatment. She was the only dentist out of the 7 that was honest enough to tell me this. Those treatments are very expensive. She wasn't trying to get as much money as possible out of me like the second dentist who gave me an estimate that cost as much as new car and said that was the best he could do. It was close to 7pm before I left and I know the staff were ready to go home and wanted me to shut up but they made me feel like I was their #1 priority. I left and thanked everyone and spoke with Sharon in the business office the next day to discuss what my insurance would pay and what I could afford and financing options. Sharon was wonderful explaining the treatment plan with me and went over each line with me and was able to get the cost in my budget without worry of financial downfall. The day I went to for my first try on and impressions I met the amazing dental assistant Anna who took amazing care of me and was gentle and just a ray of sunshine to be in her presence. The whole staff was amazing and I'm so glad I researched and interviewed until I found the most amazing dental staff. They are family now. They dental hygienist was very nice. We went there because they have an anesthesiologist. The dentist was nice when we were face to face, but would not return phone calls. We were over charged by ALOT. They wanted their money before they did anything. They said they were Delta Dental provider. However, I over paid by $800. They said it was because they did not charge the insurance for the anesthesiologist. I was NEVER TOLD that and it took until the last time we went to even get a statement from them. They OVERCHARGE and hide charges from they customers. read more

I have never been services here. But I did call earlier & check the site prior to visiting the first time. Was told that my insurance was in-network there. But when I got there & signed in, it appeared my insurance was no longer in-network for them. They say it was a recent change & wasn't updated, but I still wasted 30 mins to go right back home. Went to this business after reading reviews and was impressed. I needed one tooth looked at. Appt went well until I got in that rotten chair. No consultation and only an xray led to the dentist telling me I needed all my teeth out. My teeth were not rotten, bleeding or swollen. Confused and scared about what I was hearing, trusting the Dr. knew what they were looking at and talking about.!!! The next thing I knew I was being set up with an appt to have the work done. The surgery was suspect as I have what feels like is my jaw bone protruding some. The immediate dentures would not fit over the bulge and I was told to toughen it out. I would not bring a stuffed animal to this office. They pretend to care but get annoyed when problems arise. My advise is to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion when it comes to your health. Although I have a love-hate relationship with going to the dentist... truly love this office and staff. Making an appointment is easy. When you arrive every one is quick to check you in and smiling. Very pleasant front desk staff and they quickly make you comfortable! The office is beautiful, tastefully decorated and welcoming. And.... free WiFi if you need it! Dr Ted came to my rescue a few years ago when a molar had a run in with an olive pit~ in which the olive pit won. I'm terrified of dental work but Dr Ted and his staff quickly gave me nitrous, took care of me and sent me in my way all fixed up. I like the fact that although I'm a 40 plus shipping.. they cater to chickens in the dental chair and do a great job making sure comfort and reassurance is given. Since that time I've gone for cleanings, checkups and consults and the superb care has continued. I do miss the Tees you could get with a Yelp check in. As a new patient the process was very smooth, the wait time was minimal. I found out i had to have a root canal and it was scheduled immediately. The dr's and staff are all so friendly and reassuring. Even with being covered by insurance i still had out of pocket expenses and they give you several options including a discount because i paid in full that day. read more
