Some of the prettiest cliffs you'll accidentally come across as you drive down the scenic road along the ocean. There was a single family all the way down at the bottom; the climb looks rough. The main water of the beach/bay had a lot of sediment or bloom, making the water brown. Surprised at the sound of the waves hitting the rocky shore. The birds can fly at 60mph & dive at 70mph so if you score an action photo consider it pure luck. Crows are highly intelligent, can identify a human & do not forget a face (the original facial recognition?). They know me & often buzz me just for fun. My fave is a one-legged crow who sometimes lands beside me along with a couple of his/her buddies, curious & waiting to have their picture taken. I've determined that crows are show-offs. They perform impressive aerial maneuvers, each trying to outdo the other with flying skills. How many crows to expect? It's hit or miss - some days there are dozens, some days fewer than 10. I'm not especially fond of the crows who leave dead rats in my gutters or pound on my chimney cap incessantly....but those Lunada Bay crows have won me over. I've been known to hang out with them 'till my camera battery dies. And then I get home only to discover I've barely missed every great shot, except occasionally one, cuz they're so fast & my camera is slow. I'll get a better camera & then perhaps will have something to crow about. Meanwhile, the show must go on. read more

Wow Lunada Bay and surrounding area never disappoints, the directions from this Yelp review are very spot on! It leads you to the overlook where you can either take in the view and take lots of pictures or take your chances and climb down the cliffs to the tide pools! My Dad is a surfer and used to bring me here as a kid to play in the tide pools however it's not an easy climb down! Make sure you come prepared! Whenever I come here I decide what it is I will do here, either just come looking nice and take pics with the gorgeous overlook or rather wear hiking clothes or bathing suit and climb down to the tide pools! This is one of the best, most beautiful views in all of Palos Verdes. I've noticed that some people have written reviews about growing up in this neighborhood or living in the area, all that is great. But, for those of you who do not live here, I will discuss the actual bay. Visually, this is a beautiful, scenic location. You can get to it very easily and there is plenty of parking that lines its upper cliffs. Personally, I stop here all of the time just to take a moment, take a few deep breaths, watch the waves, and admire the beauty of the sea and the cliffs. Speaking of the cliffs, they are constantly receding. From this, the pathway down to the water can be pretty treacherous and scary. So, for many people you may not want to take that walk. The pathway down itself is constantly changing as well, so I cannot provide you with the best route as it may all be gone tomorrow. But, if you do make your way down to the sea, what you will find is a narrow, rocky beach. You can just stay there or you can follow it a long way around the P.V. peninsula. Your choice. It is all a beautiful, great experience. The upper region, overlooking the bay, is also constantly changing. There is a fairly large landmass between the street and the cliffs. In times gone past, before the most recent drought, it was very green and grassy much of the year. For the past few years, however, it is pretty much just dirt. So, it is not a great place to hang out. This being said, it still leads you to the overlook of the sea. So, it is still serving its purpose. Ah, beautiful, peaceful, forever tranquil Lunada Bay... And then there was the time when my boyfriend said "Come on! I've always wanted to surf this place." And I said "You DO know this place is an infamous "Locals Only" spot, right?" And he says "No problem. Look, there's only a few people out." So we make the steep climb down, don our wetsuits and paddle out. A rowdy bunch of guys at the top of the cliff are screaming obscenities at someone. Could it be us? After a couple hours and some fun rights, we paddle back in. Hmm, that was easy enough I thought. We didn't get hassled once. Until my boyfriend opened his backpack to find someone had shit in it. WARNING: Watch your back and your car if your surfing here. There is a well documented local gang of surfer here. Visiting surfers have been assaulted and sued PV and gang residents. The local PV police refuse to get off their asses to run gang surveillance. Bring your surfboard,camera, and a lookout for these white 20s-40s crowns. Enjoy your time here. Good view, not great. Looks even worst in person. Too many rocky free side parking. These open spaces overwhelm me since in LA you have no choice. Thinking is too hard. Very wide trail, not much to do besides smell the sea and roses. Very calm with almost no people Limited and difficult beach access. Damn you multi-million dollar homes for blocking my beach access and building on an ancient Spanish Mission Town. This place is too gentrify for my sensibility. -Ritz place with a white ghetto gang, useless cops. Take back the beach don't let fear and elitist PV residents win a public beach battle. You shouldn't have to be uber rich to enjoy some public beach time :) read more

One of the premier big wave spots in California, Lunada Bay is known for its intimidating size. Lunada Bay is one of the few places on the coast that can handle waves up to 20 feet. It is a deadly, boulder-filled line-up with a long, right, workable wall. A big wave board is essential. A few brave or just idiots will raise the stakes by taking off at a spot called Truck Drivers, a few hundred yards behind the main peak. Great spot. Whether you're a local or a tourist, it's worth seeing and coming back to. Fun to simply stand and look at views on top of the cliffs. If you're a surfer, it's a good break. Local surfers have a reputation for being old, immature adults. Best way to deal with them is to paddle out and ignore them. Adventurous hang out spot, I definitely recommend going when it is sunny! Going down the side of the hill was not fun for me, I'm scared of heights. There are tons of rocks at the bottom, so bring your sneakers! I think it would have been more fun if me and my boyfriend had a picnic there cause it's so beautiful! The best about this spot are the locals. They are so nice and will make your day. Just ask them any question, surfing tip, life and etc they will give you a conversation that you will never forget for the rest of your life. I'm not a local at Lunda but I am elsewhere and I respect the bay boys for holding it down as best as possible. I would never surf there just because I respect the way things go and wish my spot was more like there's because this new age of surf wannabes is taking over and ruining it for the real surfers. Especially Surfline it's a guide to being a kook. You should have to check with your own eyes not thru a bullcrap camera and if there's no cameras then it evens the odds for the dedicated surfers. My point is that you all need to find a home break and stick with it stop thinking you're welcome everywhere because you're not. read more

Great place to learn how to surf. The locals kept telling me to try this new maneuver called "The Pearl" . It is when you take off and the nose of the board goes into the water causing your board to flip over as you go over the falls. I kept doing it and they said I was really good at it. It was really fun - kind of like river rafting. They said the longer you stay under the better the maneuver. Another thing they taught me is the "Fiberglass Enema" where you ride a wave and the guy behind you shoots his board out at you. After I got out of the water, I noticed that my car had been "customized" with some cool mud art. Basically, the local artist will take some mixture of sand and water and spread it all over your car. I made some cool new friends there and I will return soon. read more

Bring a dive knife. Cuz there's gonna be a fight-not if, when. You ARE going to get into a fight and you'll need to be able to defend yourself. Also, they'll throw rocks at you on the beach and the men on the cliffs WILL damage your vehicle after you climb down to the beach. read more

Im not sure if this place is open to public. It seems to beThink is, there are no parking meters. Free parking along side of street. The kid and I came by here back in March, so of course I didnt see people in the water. Didnt see any surfers either, and you know those guys dont care how cold it is. It might be that the good people of Palos Verdes Estates know how to keep a secret. This place is awesome. Its up on a cliff, so its a long long walk down to beach. Im not sure how you would get down there, as Im not into hiking. The day we came, it was close to dusk. There were a lot of little fluffs of cloud. It made for absolutely gorgeous pictures. There were a cute couple that walked up after son and I were leaving. We made deal and temporarily swapped camera with each other to take pictures. I normally dont hand over the pricey Nikon (hell I keep it in a dumpy backpack to deter thiefs), but he had a really nice camera also so I figured it was ok. I wasnt sure, but in car my son confirmed that he had seen it on internet and it was equal ir not more in value than ours!! I think he might have been professional (or on his way there) His cute girlfriend might have been a model, she kinda had that look and she "came alive" in front of the camera when he was snapping shots of the sunset. Anyway, this is definately really nice place to come park the car and step out and take a few pictures and absorb the beautiful surroundings. Another plus, locals are very nice. Its an affluent neighborhood (not sure how much so, but nice houses there) but they dont five you that.... 'you in the right neighborhood hun?' look. Probably not good place to take little kids as the cliff is steep. I've seen people with dogs here so might be nice place to take "fido". Note: Please bring bags and curb your dog.. nothing worse than stepping in dog crap. read more

BEST SURFING SPOT IN LOS ANGELES!!! Can't believe more people don't know about the Bay. Waves are incredible here, they ride long and it's and a great place to learn. Gorgeous view, perfect place to walk around on a Sunday afternoon. The cliff does have a lot of dry weeds and straw around it, so wear closed toed shoes when walking in this area. Also, seems like it would be a good place to smoke, but lots of cops are always driving by looking to ticket teens. I grew up in Palos Verdes in the 70's. This place has an nice right surf break off of the north side. It breaks on a large north or west swell it is one of the heaviest waves in CA. There is also a left called Avalache that breaks off the south side it maxes out at 10 feet. Then there is Outer Avalache, I have seen this wave three times the size of Lunada Bay. The Bay Boys are generally poor surfers with shoddy equipment, sub par wave knowledge and typically too out of shape to really scrap in a pack...if the historically corrupt police department keep making steps to earn the publics trust back, most of the Bay Boys will probably just quit surfing. Their only leg to stand on is that the community doesn't approve of towel changing, so try to be as respectful of that as possible. When in Rome! read more

Great surf spot with great waves!!! I am from Santa Cruz and have surfed all over the world. I went here on a road trip down the coast to Encinitas and was amazed how friendly the 'core' locals were. In fact almost too friendly. It was a bit awkward, Several of the locals we hitting on me and my crew. Some even offered to towel us off when we got out of the water. I have posted this on as many sites as I can and tell all my friends this and to surf this area as long as you are not homophobic. I have no problem with most of the 'core' locals at palos verdes and their sexual orientation. So don't believe all the hype, SURF HERE!!!! They just want a hug....or maybe more. :-) read more

oh yea boy - another epic surf spot in so cal that is pretty unkown. most of the locals are super cool. many will welcome you with open arms and give you free surf lesson, if you dont have a board or wetsuit most of the locals with lend you their gear. they are a totally different breed of surfer in this area. they are super nice guys that really seem to know what surfing is all about. many times I have seen beginners come here with cameras and video gear and thoughtful locals will actually tape your session for you and give you pointers as you are going down the line. this place is a must surf any surfer beginner or advanced. read more

The view is typical of most in that area, but the trail is quite dangerous and is under constant movement. Took my 2 kids with me 8, and 10. The hike down, which we couldn't finish, was just way too sketchy. There also doesn't seem to be any "real" type of sand or beach down there, just rocks and more rocks. We ended up going to Abalone Cove a few miles south of LB and had a much better and easier time. To each their own I guess. read more
