Great food, quick, and affordable. If you're out downtown on the weekend, they're serving food late! They have a lot more interesting choices than most of the Mexican restaurants in town. I had the quesabirria, it was incredible. Easy counter service, and food came out quickly. Loved getting to try everything from the salsa bar, definitely recommend an order of chips. I popped in here in need of dinner while at orientation with my son. I assumed it was a sit down restaurant and was wrong. This is a counter service restaurant with seating. I had the 3 empanada combo with one of each type of empanada: ground beef, chicken and cheese. They were served on a paper plate, topped with crema and bits of cheese, and some naked lettuce. I also ordered a side order of chips. The empanadas were greasier than I expected and not as full as I expected either. I received a huge (paper) plate of chips, which I guess compensated for the $4 charge for them, and an empty boat. I figured out that this was for salsa from their "salsa bar" which was a tiny area next to the register where the space for mild pico de gallo was empty. Nothing inside was labeled as to what it was. That could be an issue for people with allergies. The soda fountain is waaaaaaay in the back, past the register. read more

My absolute favorite spot in state college. Their Gorditas are the best thing ever. A great spot to go to after a night of fun with your friends. They're open until 3 am on the weekends so it's great for a quick delicious bite. They're always open to replacing any wrong orders and their prices are so good!! read more

A very popular local Mexican chain that opened a new location downtown. It has a pretty standard selection of Mexican foods like tacos, enchiladas, empanadas, etc. But their selections of meats is...too "standard"? The filling options are just chicken, pork, beef, and lamb. There's no beef tongue, goat, or even avocado? Or a vegetable option listed on the menu. There are notes here and there that says "vegan option available" but what does that mean? Why doesn't it just list the vegetables it'll contain like all the other options on the menu? I had 3 corn tortilla tacos, one each of chicken, pork, and beef. In terms of flavor, I would say it was good, but not somewhere I can't wait to go back to again. We found this place because of Yelp and we sure are glad we did. It's nothing fancy in regards to plating (they were paper), but the restaurant was very clean and cool for such a hot day. Since it's more like a fast food style of Mexican, I wasn't sure what to expect since there was a cashier and not really table service other than the same cashier delivers the food. Boy were we surprised with generous portions, and delicious, authentic Mexican food. I got the steak taco combo, my wife got the ground beef taco combo, and my child the cheese quesadilla. The food was absolutely amazing! Far better than what I would have expected by passing by this place. If you find yourself in the State College area, you owe it to yourself to try this "hole in the wall" hidden gem!!! read more

Lupitas is by far the best Mexican food in central PA. However, while their food is great, their sauce bar is really what makes them spectacular. At any time there's 8 different sauces (from mild all the way to this mysterious black sauce that will burn the devil right out of you), pico de gallo, pickled jalapeños, pickled onions, limes, etc etc all ready to roll at this great sauce bar. A really important thing to note is that their official menu is pretty slim-you usually get the options of beef, pork, or chicken. In reality they have every meat you want, but for some reason it isn't on the menu. All you need to do is ask for Al pastor or barbacoa or carnitas or whatever and they will have it! They also have delicacies like esquite that also aren't on the menu. Just ask! One caveat: their original gas station location is run by ethnic folk so they know what you are talking about, but this location usually has very un-ethnic looking cashiers which often do not know what you are trying to ask about if it isn't on the menu! Id say the best things I've had there are the carnitas sopes with a side of esquite. 1.5 sopes sufficiently fills me up, but i can eat two if I'm very hungry! I wouldn't say the ambiance is especially pleasant. The dining room echoes horribly and has extremely blue lights which makes it feel a little industrial. The crowning piece of art is a stuffed animal vending machine. We often just do takeout and grab a bunch of sauces for use at home! read more

We love Lupitas! I had been to the old location a few times and loved it then, so I was thrilled to learn they were opening the new location just blocks from where I live. The restaurant itself feels like a classic Mexican restaurant and is never crowded. Occasionally there's a large group making noise but I've always had pleasant experiences dining in. They also make it easy to carry out, just don't forget the sauces! The sauces make the food. I always get sopes, and I enjoy chicken but have also gotten carnitas. They often have meats not on the "official" inside menu but sometimes on their outside sign of daily specials so if you want a different meat, ask! The service is never overtly friendly but they get us our food and are polite so I see no issues. I docked two stars due to the service and the prices are a little higher than what I'd prefer to be paying but clearly that hasn't stopped me. A solid restaurant. read more

We were in town for a graduation and stopped here as our two daughters love their Mexican food. We ordered the very basics, a carne asada burrito, carne asada tacos for the girls that came with rice and beans, and some quesibirria tacos. The only well-made food from our order was the quesibirria tacos. Everything else was very disappointing. The girls' tacos had more fat chunks than actual meat. The tortillas were swimming in oil, the rice was literally cooked in a rice cooker and given color to make it look like mexican rice. My husband's burrito came with avocado that was still not ripe. He had to pick it out of the burrito because it was too hard to bite into. Refills were an extra charge, and to top it off, our bill was $46! Despite ordering everything together, our orders came out separately. My tacos were cold by the time the rest of the food came out. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone who has eaten real Mexican food before. You will be disappointed to pay so much money for food that is cold, greasy, and not well made. read more
