Gas station tacos are the best tacos. You'll have to go inside the Exxon and to the left and you're transported into a little Mexican eatery with four stools. Didn't know what to expect but tried three different tacos and a gordita I ordered way too much food but glad I got a chance to try a barbacoa, steak and carnitas taco and the steak gordita. The pork was super juicy and tasty and the steak was tender. Loved all of it. There's fountain soda and a salsa bar with a bunch of different salsas too. Service was awesome, super friendly girl at the front and super quick service behind the counter. Check out lupitas if you're passing through State College. Hidden gem for sure read more

Lupitas started in an old Uni-mart gas station. The Uni-mart was a sketchy place that I avoided and then I tried Lupitas food. I found myself visiting this place every other week for lunch. They have since opened up 2 more locations. One in Downtown State College and one in Milesburg. I've visited the State College locations but not the one in Milesburg. Ambience is limited but they are blaring latino music through the air to help with the mood. You order at the counter and seat yourself. A great quick stop or lunch break place. Most menu items allow you to order 1 or more. An order of 3 with a drink runs around $10-11. Lupitas claims they are authentic mexican food. I've never been to mexico but its definitely different then the ameri-mexi joints in the area. Their costs are comparable to Taco Bell but it's fresh quality and tastes are well above the typical fast food joint. I love the tacos w/ fresh corn shells and the various meat options, the fried empanadas are delicous but my go to is the tostados. They have a serve yourself salsa, guac, pickled onions, hot peppers bar that is pretty fantastic. My main issue is the bar gets hammered and in a post covid world it's not too appealing which really impacts the experience. If you remove or avoid the salsa bar area then the food is missing that spark of flavor that really elevates this place. read more

Unassuming spot that serves a mean barbacoa taco. We went since it was highly recommended by friends. The beef in the barbacoa taco was super flavorful and juicy with an initial tomatoey flavor. However, the other items we tried (carnitas taco, pollo empanada, and carne molida empanada) were not as impressive - they were all dry and not that flavorful. read more

Update: over the past few months I've been getting burned corn tortillas for the tacos and burned meat. It still tastes good, but it seems like their line cooks have changed or something. To make matters worse, my order is inaccurate and I paid for items that I never received. I should have checked the take out containers before I left. It was once very good, but now I wouldn't recommend this place. Please, Lupita's, address your quality control and order accuracy. I was visiting up at State College for a weekend and heard about this little restaurant. It is located inside a gas station less than 10 minutes from State College. When you walk in the main doors, it is to your left where there is also booths to eat at. I love Mexican food so I knew I was going to enjoy my meal, but I was surprised how much I truly loved it. You order at one side of the counter and your food comes out on the other side. I went on a Saturday evening when it was busy, and the food still came out pretty quickly. The employees were very kind and such hard workers. I ordered one Barbacoa gordita and one chicken empanada. They were both extremely flavorful and very warm when I received them. I am not sure which one I liked better because they were both absolutely fantastic. There is also a salsa bar which included 7 different condiments and pickled jalapeños. On top of the salsa bar was 4 more sauces and Tajin. I did not try any of the condiments, but now I wish I would have. My friend ordered two Barbacoa tacos and a side of rice. I tried the rice and it was also amazing. There are Mexican popsicles and pop available as well. I believe the prices of everything are average and not too expensive at all. I would definitely recommend stopping here if you are in the area. I know I will be back when I visit State College again! read more

I've been to Lupita's a few times now. This particular location is inside of a gas station, but they've done a great job of still making it feel like a normal restaurant and NOT like what you might imagine a gas station restaurant would feel like. They have traditional Mexican food and it's delicious! I've enjoyed their tacos, empanadas, tamales (my personal favorite) and a few other items too. Their chicken is delicious but the barbacoa and pork are also good. I will say, when someone first told me about "authentic Mexican food" I was expecting lots more flavor than what it actually is. It's not bad by any means, but TexMex is often spicier. Their food is far from bland but definitely improves with the myriad of sauces they have available (try them all! so good). It's a good way to serve versatile food and I have never been disappointed. The location is a little off my regular path so I don't go very frequently, but they are opening another location in downtown (on my walk to school, RIP wallet) that will be really good for their business as a whole. The prices are a little high for my usual meal out too, but every now and then I just want a really good couple of tamales and this is where it's at. They have Mexican cokes too (also my favorite! no more HFCS) as well as other drinks and some dessert options. If you haven't been, it's worth going to! read more

I am so glad I found this gem. It's just too bad I couldn't come here before they got higher stars since so many people know now but they are well deserved. I know everyone mentions the unimart as a deterrent for some weird reason. I can only hope locals and those who are passing through don't judge a book by its cover. I've traveled a lot of places to stumble on delicious food in odd places. Hoping this will put you guys even more so on the map! Our experience here was a bit chaotic though. I think they are relatively still new handling rush orders and I'm sure as time goes on they will figure it out. I came at prime time around 7 and had tried calling ahead but it seems they were probably held up and it looks like they had hired more people to help at cash wrap since the girls told me it was their first day lol. I also noticed clientele came from a variety of backgrounds which was comforting. It ranged from college students to construction workers. And I know this place is good when other Hispanics are coming to eat here!!! You can call ahead or order there. There's some seating inside that's properly spaced. They have a selection of familiar Mexican drinks and even paletas!! Food: Ok I will preface I had the flour tortillas which really took away my authentic experience and made me sad but they ran out of corn tortillas. Will call next time We ordered: -the chicken and beef empanadas -carnitas tacos -lamb tacos -beef taco -Barbacoa I thought my favorites were the lamb and barbacoa. Honestly I was impressed by not only the amount of filling in our tacos but also the flavor was on point for every single meat we had. Couldn't go wrong on the chicken or beef empanadas but I loved the beef one better. Their sauce game is on point and this is how my SO and I rate a taco place is how good their sauce game is. They had a variety of salsas and our favorite avocado salsa. They even birria flavored sauce which was the red oil one. WOW! All in all, we'll be coming back but for corn tortillas next time LOL. Lupita's is a rare gem in State College. Don't let the fact that its literally located inside a Uni-Mart deter you from trying it! I've been here 3 or 4 times and the food is consistently awesome. I love the salsa options though they are on the spicier side, the pico is very mild. This is an amazing place for authentic Mexican food, hard to find around here. Everything is excellent, we've come here four times with friends and everyone agrees that anything they order is top notch. I'd highly recommend the lamb tacos, those are definitely my favorite! They're salsa bar is pretty good as well, but sometimes they're not as spicy as they could be. I see a lot of complaints about this place that they are sometimes out of certain menu items, especially the tamales. You have to remember that with real food comes certain trade offs, and it's difficult to predict the exact amount of an item you'll need for the following week. Lupita's offers seriously good Mexican food, but the setting makes it seem a little strange. When you find it, you will think you have come to the wrong place. You go into a Unimart convenience store, and the restaurant is tucked away at the far back. But try it. Excellent value all round, and very, VERY, authentic Oaxacan cooking. Even better, they keep trying all sorts of new dishes, as regular experiments. The most recent was Tamales de Mole, among the best of their kind I have ever had. I spend a lot of time in Texas and California, so I know this is the real deal. As a word of advice, you order at a register, where you should always be sure to look down on the counter for handwritten cards with the specials they are trying that day. These are usually very good indeed. The people are very friendly and helpful, but language issues mean that some mistakes do get made. On the other hand, some of those mistakes have resulted in my unintentionally trying things I would never have thought of otherwise! You honestly can't go wrong. I can't recommend this place too strongly. Take advantage before they decide to move. First rate. read more

This is delicious! As others have written, don't be put off by the location. Lupita's is amazing and absolutely one of the top five spots in State College. The delicious smells hit you as soon as you step into the Unimart. I had the flautas (delicious, crunchy, and with an incredible sauce) and lamb tacos (to die for!) and highly recommend both. This original location of Lupita's is awesome and its location in the gas station adds to the overall coolness. The food is, of course, delicious, but the sauce bar takes the crown. While all the sauces are to some degree spicy, there are a couple mildish options, although the best ones are the ones that make you cry while you're eating! My favorite thing to order is the carnitas sopes. Around 1.5 is plenty for a meal, 2 if you are hungry, making it one of the best food deals in State College. Unlike their Downtown location, most workers here don't speak much English. This is only a problem for takeout orders, and I have truly never gotten a correct takeout order from here. Mexican food is not even in my top five favorite cuisines on this planet (which is an ignorant statement, given the huge variety of Mexican cuisine -- but I'm talking burritos, rice & beans, tacos, etc. here, not *actual* Mexican food in one of the many Mexican states/regions), and so it's surprising even to myself just how much I like Lupita's. Taco Tuesday has a whole new meaning now, as I find myself craving their delicious carnitas & lamb tacos at least once a week for lunch. Said tacos come with a generous amount of cilantro and raw onion, and you can choose between homemade corn tortillas or flour tortillas. Since I already outed myself as a total ignoramus, I'll freely admit to my preference for the flour tortillas - authenticity be damned ;-) The sauce bar is the bomb, tho certainly not for spice wimps. The guac has a serious kick, as do the various hot pepper sauces. There are always tons of fresh lime pieces to squirt on your taco, as well as pico de gallo & radish slices. One thing to keep in mind is that vegetarian/vegan options are practically non-existent. Pescatarians can rejoice on those occasions when shrimp tacos are available, which come in a zesty sauce. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. It makes me happy how successful this family-run business has been since they've opened, and I'm crossing my fingers for a more convenient i.e. downtown location in the near future. Until then, a weekly or bi-weekly trek to the Unimart is mandatory. Go eat there! read more

I heard about Lupitas for a long time and was excited to try it. We ate there for our first time on July 16th. It was good. More expensive than I anticipated to feed our family of four. But a few days later, we read about how the restaurant and its owners are under investigation for human trafficking and exploiting immigrant workers. One of my favorite State College eateries, especially since buying a house in Pine Grove Mills. The food is inexpensive, but so delicious, the salsas are amazing and there is something for everyone. This vegetarian is very pleased that most dishes have vegetarian (and even vegan) options. I love to have the tacos as black bean tacos or bean tostadas! read more
