We were traveling...hungry...for breakfast. El Centro beckoned, so we exited for the downtown. Although it was a Sunday morning we did not expect to desolation of Main Street.
Buildings were empty in this lovely, once proud city. The art deco buildings were plastered with for lease, for rent, bankruptcy and closed signs. Very depressing.
Wife said, "Let's try Mexican...I like their breakfasts." And the gods smiled as we found Lupita's.
Small, walk-up-to-the-counter-to-order place it was totally in Spanish. I can get by in the language so translated just about everything for my wife, but was left blank on some words. An older woman was standing by so I asked and somewhat got the answers I needed so we ordered.
We were the only people there.
Wife had a "sincronisada" which I understood correctly was a cheese and beef quesadilla. After a lot of questioning discovered that they served menudo and goat stew on weekends, so ordered the "birria."
Both meals were wonderful. Lynn's quesadilla was large and well-stuffed with meat and gooey melted cheese. My birria was full of meat, very flavorful and accompanied by home made thick corn tortillas, which she called "dorados" or golds. And they were a rich yellow color which I ate making tacos with the meat and also to sop up the rich broth.
When we were finished I asked if the older woman was Lupita and she said no, introducing us to her daughter who rang up our bill. A mother-daughter team offering strangers to visit their kitchen.
Can't get much better than that. Even if you do not speak Spanish, you can work it out. Good food, simple decor, nice people.
