Fabulous college! A first generation college student that had to pay my own way, I had an outstanding education that has been foundational for my life and career. Met lifelong friends. My children also attended, loved it, and graduated with degrees in art/business and nursing (an incredible program partnered with Mayo Clinic). They both also have successful careers. Luther prepared us all well for life and work. There were plenty of opportunities to get involved in campus activities and music and the arts. We worked hard and that work paid off. Campus life and a robust small town downtown, all contributed to an excellent experience where both academic, social and community learning were able to take place. Luther College is an undergraduate liberal arts institution of approximately 2600 students. It is located in Decorah, Iowa, which is approximately 15 miles south of the Iowa/Minnesota border. Lurther offers more than 60 majors, minors, preprofessional programs, and course work leading to the bachelor of arts degree (B.A.). Some of these are: Accounting, Art, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Education, History, Mathematics,Music, Nursing, Physics, Prelaw, Theatre, and many more. The campus is nicely laid out, and located right next to town. Where the campus ends, the town begins. Decorah, Iowa is a nice, small, quaint town. Main Street is what you would think a small-town main street would be- with nice shops on either side, with a few sports bars thrown in. I know, I'm not reviewing Decorah, Iowa, but you have to mention the town, when you review Luther College. One of the towns major focuses is Luther College, which it should be. There are many hiking trails in and around the campus/town. We just came back from a weekend there, visiting my niece, who is in her second year at Luther College. I just loved the feel of the college - safe, homey, and just a nice place to be. Of course, you go there for the wonderful education, but the surroundings of the college, the staff (and we talked with a few), and other students, all make it wonderful! Your money is well spent, when you send one (or more) of your children to Luther College. Side note - if you want to see wonderful fall colors, go at the end of September, you will not be disappointed! read more

If you want a school that has strong education, science, and music programs; that participates in the surrounding community; that is stunning in any season, and has connections to Mayo Hospital and Clinic in Rochester, MN for nursing studies. Then this school is for you. The best four years of my life. read more

If you want a school full of privileged kids who want to keep a high school attitude about life, go to Luther. Small town Iowa private school - we all know the stereotypes (judgmental, uppity, etc.) They give decent scholarships and grants. But at the end of the day, you get what you pay - a cheap education. Honestly, not worth the time. Not to mention, if you wanna give it a chance and decide to transfer, they will make it incredibly difficult because of their dropping attendance rates. The credits do not apply to most state schools, and all the loopholes they make you jump through to get out of their system is tiring and not worth the effort. Can't deny it is a beautiful campus. Some students excel in this environment. Personally, it was not a fit. If you're a music kid, give this school a second look. Otherwise, I'd move on. read more

Prettiest place in Iowa to watch a football game on a Saturday afternoon

I speak for one particular non-traditional full-time student Majoring in History/ and Psychology. History to work in Middle/High Schools while working toward her Doctorate planning on concentrating on teaching Virginia's past to just after WWII and my LGBT History. This is my first semester at Luther, I transferred in from Northern Iowa community college where for the most part what ruled in the horrid small town high school of my past still ruled. where diversity didn't exist,where Gay/Straight Alliance was a thought and for nearly all of my 3.6 years at N.I.C.C. the school couldn't be bothered with us being one of their communities. The two colleges as different as night and day. Luther feels like what higher learning should be and yet seems to fall short of , Luther is students coming to class bare foot. My favorite place to read is in the old library laying on my stomach behind the stairwell. N.I.C.C. has a more cold sterile feel to it. N.I.C.C. is like that maiden aunts house that you hate to be dragged to but can't get out of going to. I studied for 3 and a half years there working on getting 2 AA's one in Human Services and one in Psychology. In 2008 August I had been hit by a retired 92 year old attorney in my hometown of Waukon Iowa. A town so Gay unfriendly that when the only out lesbian living there was struck and not killed the fellow who struck her wasn't even ticketed and was the next day driving once more.(My higher math skills needed assisting). When i approached the disability office at N.I.C.C. for assistance with my learning problem I was told that I didn't qualify for assistance because I wasn't on drugs. It is a documented medical truth that 65 of the population that have never been struck by a car has a learning disability in higher math, so I came into Luther with 92 credits and No AA. When I teach and consul i want to be like a port to students who are diverse. We aren't the same to begin with and should be seen as individuals no one should ever lump students in a group and decided that all 7 year old's are like or unlike this or that. At Luther we future students or what you will learn that having a heart is a true gift. read more

Love this place The atmosphere here is amazing and the facilities are always clean and taken care of. I would defiantly recommend this as a top choice to shoot hoops and the best place for the disc golf!! read more
