Buffalo has a couple of these but nothing quite compares to the ones here, and one of them is Saint Anthony Village. It actually has a huge Mall as part of it although it's in the City of Roseville technically - I'm not really sure how they define these things. Saint Anthony is sort of within Roseville. It's a nice affluent part of town a few miles north of downtown, with absolutely horrendous traffic. I like it and on the other hand I don't like it because of the traffic. It is the most popular Mall in town other than the gargantuan Mall of America. A lot of people from all over the area come to these parts if they don't want to Brave the massive Mall of America.

It…read morejust opened last week, but Queermunity is a community gathering place and resource, coworking space, cafe, and events hub dedicated to creating space for the LGBTQ+ community in the Twin Cities, but it stands out from similar places by being free! They have optional paid membership tiers for extra perks like discounts on cafe purchases, events, rentals, etc., but anyone is free to visit and gather in the common spaces, which I think is so important. Aside from providing a welcoming gathering space, they provide a ton of free resources--they host monthly programming like movie screenings, discussions, wellness events, and beyond; they have a free resource wall (available for checkouts on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 4-8pm) with things like canned goods, hygeine supplies, sexual health supplies, etc. available to community members in need; and they also have gender-neutral single-stall bathrooms, one of which has a shower available to use if needed, too. They've got a ton of just for-fun stuff too--craft tables, a library, a ping-pong table, and a small market area with goods by local queer makers. There's free parking on some side streets nearby, but you can also purchase discounted validated parking for the Seven Points ramp at the front desk. It seems to be almost entirely volunteer-run, so I'm definitely going to be looking into how I can get involved with the awesome work they do!

It is a fairly new community center, so it has that minimalist, Scandinavian vibe to it. There is always a helpful person on staff at the info desk, too. This place has a play space called the "backyard", which is fantastic. It is big enough for the kids to have fun, not much in the way of sketchy things where the kids can get hurt, and not too big that you lose your kid and lose your mind trying to find them. I also feel that the parents here are good at keeping an eye on their kids and there aren't any kids that are too old, rampaging around knocking the little ones over. There is also a golf pro shop and a simple restaurant, too. It is a good spot for an afternoon play date with the kids and some parents, then head to the restaurant and stuff the kids, and then off home for bath and bedtime.

That waterslide with the lights and music? Awesome! It's a one of a kind experience. Beyond the waterpark the playground was also great. It's not your average playground; it's big, well designed and has tons of opportunities for kids to explore and play. What really makes Shoreview Community Center stand out is the community. They offer so much more than just a pool and playground. From the fitness center to the skatepark they have created a space for all interests and ages. It's clear they have invested in making a valuable resource for everyone.

Bamboo Bay is much louder than the main pool area due to the fact it's more enclosed and there are sprayers with lots of water all over. The lifeguards do a great job of keeping their eyes on the kiddos cause it can get very very packed in both pool areas and kids of all different ages including adults too! The bathrooms and lockers are great and all facilities are pretty new and kept clean. I do love the spinner to spin clothes after swim time... As a side note, if you're like me and just hung out with other parents while the kiddos swam...it can get very very hot and humid so dress accordingly even in the winter time!

[Note: this facility is multi-purposed. My review is about the fitness amenities (gym, locker…read morerooms, fitness room). There are also conference rooms, an auditorium and other event spaces here that I won't be discussing.] The City of Saint Paul owns and operates several recreation centers. I was looking for an indoor walking/running track and a fitness room and came across the "Saint Paul Getting Fit" program, through which I can buy a membership to use any of the facilities for--get this--$30 *annually* (http://www.stpaul.gov/index.aspx?NID=2940). Not per month, per year. So with the cold weather on its way, I went to my nearest recreation center, the Wellstone Center (also known as El Rio Vista Rec Center) and bought a membership. The lady at the front desk was very nice and helpful. There was open gym going on for volleyball and basketball, as well as a big festival in the auditorium. She was handing out passes, taking gym fees, and helping me sign up for my membership, without so much as blinking. Do not hesitate to call the front desk line if you have questions, she will help you out. (Tangent: when I first heard about the Getting Fit program, I called the main St Paul Park & Rec office. The person I talked to didn't give me any information, and couldn't even tell me which Rec Centers had walking tracks. Very underwhelmed). The locker rooms are on the lower level. Small, but fine for my needs. It's BYO-Lock, and they do have small and larger lockers. There are also two shower stalls in the ladies locker room, for your reference. The fitness room is also on the lower level, and is fairly small. There were three ellipticals, two treadmills, a multi-function weight machine, two sets of free weights, two bars for bench press (one standard, one was a really cool self-spotting machine), and a couple other pieces of miscellaneous strength-training equipment. The treadmills are really nice--newer, with good options for programmed and manual work outs. As a cooldown, I went upstairs to use the walking track. Myself and the SO were the only ones using it on a Sunday afternoon. The track is smallish (11.5 laps = 1mile) and is probably only about 6 feet wide, but it does the trick. It's suspended over the gymnasiums, so I had a good time watching the local teens playing volleyball and basketball. Overall, I was very impressed with this facility for the price I paid to use it. Their fitness amenities don't have a ton of capacity, but there also aren't many people using it (There were 2 other people in the fitness room, and no one on the walking track). The facility is clean and well-maintained. The staff is friendly and helpful. And it's, overall, a fantastic amenity for the West Side community.

I find that they offer a variety of rooms and room sizes for rent, and they appear to set their prices at a reasonable rate. They offer assistance with setting up and with the A/V equipment as well. The location is easy to find and the parking is good, too. As far as other uses for the center, I understand they have really great fitness amenities and the membership here is very affordable.
