What a wonderfully inviting coffee shop/cafe that is located in the Clifton neighborhood just off…read morethe Mellwood Avenue exit on I-64. I came for the coffee, but oh that display of homemade bakery items had me drooling! I had the Turkish Coffee which was a complete experience. The barista talked me through the process of making the coffee, as he was rolling the small, long-handled coffee pot in warm sand, to ensure even heat distribution and to create a foam. The coffee was served in traditional fashion using gorgeous serviceware that consisted of a long-stemmed coffee pot, a small demitasse-type cup, a covered dish with a small sweet item (in my case a small cookie), and water for cleansing the palate. I was worried that the coffee would be too strong for my taste, but it was not strong at all and had a much different taste than espresso. It was deliciously full-bodied and satisfying. The cafe was spotlessly clean with a warm and relaxing vibe with many tables. I especially enjoyed the wall of famous people and events from Middle Eastern countries. Ample street-side parking is available on area streets.

First: the Turkish coffee. This was served traditionally (as best I can tell), in beautiful servingware with a coffee pot, small mug and cup of water to drink to cleanse the palate. My friend's tea was served in a tea press which I liked as well. Cafe Shiraz also boasted a well stocked case of pastries. I enjoyed a pastry stuffed with chorizo. Cafe Shiraz had many indoor tables. It was a perfect place to chat. Such a great coffee spot all the way around.

Got the lox on a sourdough bagel. The bagel itself is big and pretty doughy, which I liked. They load it up with sweet pickled onions.... honestly too much, it kind of buries the salmon. And there's not a ton of lox to begin with. This isn't a loaded NYC lox bagel, you get one slice a side. What's there was a bit not sure about how they cure the salmon here. Still good overall, just not balanced. $14 feels a bit high for what you get. Tried the ham and cheddar quiche too. Nice and creamy, good flavor, slight smokiness. Solid, but really small for $10. Like a tiny slice of pie. Comes with a small fruit bowl but come on. The spanakopita croissant was probably the best thing I had. Good size, flaky, buttery, nice spinach and cheese flavor. Definitely should be warmed up for max yum factor, but for $5.50 it's a great deal. Overall, ok spot. Brunch spots know they can just charge anything and people keep going.

The cortado was also strong, super hot, and perfectly balanced with steamed milk. The barista was super sweet, and made me feel incredibly welcome (not always a feature of NYC dining). While it's relatively small inside, it's quaint and actually has a decent amount of seating. There was a steady stream of customers flowing through during the handful of hours I was there, and everyone always had somewhere to sit. I was here on a random Thursday, but I could see this place being mobbed on the weekends so I'd get here early to get your pick of treats and seating. The pastries looked off the hook but I restrained myself from participating this visit due to the numerous carbs consumed in the giant fresh-baked everything bagel. But I shall return, and I SHALL eat the sweets.
