This isn't westernized "McDonalds" qigong, this is the genuine practice, the teachings passed down by Chinese masters of the art. As a beginner, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. Vadim made me feel immediately welcome, patiently reviewing foundational practices like Ba Duan Jin. I'm thrilled he emphasizes standing practices (e.g. Zhan zhuang), deceptively powerful exercises often overlooked by lesser teachers. He's great at demonstrating proper form, explaining WHY we're learning particular practices, and patiently correctly mistakes in our form. This has been one of the most enjoyable activities I have done and it is because of Chris, the instructor. He is so fluid and graceful and still demonstrates how this can be a martial art. He breaks down the movements into simple steps so what looks to be confusing because it appears so complex becomes easy to repeat. He points out nuances in position and movements and explains why they are important so that I don't feel that I am doing pointless movements. He is patient and supportive so that no one in the group feels uncomfortable. I know that I often look awkward but Chris always helps. I plan to continue doing this with Chris indefinitely.

I've seen a variety of healers of all types over the years with varying results. Zen's healing sessions are powerful, and I definitely feel different (and better) after she's worked on me. During the sessions, I've experienced a variety of strange and interesting phenomena. Sometimes I see a blob of purple light swirling around in the forefront of my "minds eye". Sometimes I feel very light and other times like I'm sinking into the earth. She has assured me that this is all normal and is just the experience of energy moving and shifting. My favorite sensation is when it feels like my body has disappeared and I drift in and out of a very dreamlike state. It is deeply relaxing and I feel lighter for days afterward. Prior to my first class with Caylen, I was interested in starting a meditation practice but having a very hard time with it. Physically sitting still and mentally letting go **aren't exactly** my strong suits. And that's when a friend pointed me toward Caylen's classes and recommended that I might want to try something that incorporated a bit more movement. My initial reaction was "Yeah, okay, it couldn't hurt." That, and I got a good laugh out of the well-worn joke describing Tai Chi as, "Old people sneaking up on trees." A half-dozen classes later, I still laugh at the joke... but I'm now very appreciative of what I've learned from the "Storm Tai Chi" classes. If you're looking for some sort of over-the-top, high energy, highly regimented class... this might not fit the bill. But if you want to learn about Tai Chi (and although this might sound silly, about yourself as well, in both a physiological and mindful sense) I'd encourage anyone to attend one of Caylen's classes. They are informal, but exceedingly informative. The instructional style is low key but amazingly insightful. And the number of times I find myself using (sometimes subtlety, sometimes very overtly) the things from a lesson in everyday circumstances often catches me by surprise. Be it something to do with breathing, or awareness, or being present, or even pushing things away or pulling things towards me (either physically or mentally)... it's ALL GOOD. And yes, I even find that since working with Caylen, some of the more traditional meditation practices are now easier, much easier, to get my mind around. All because of my time spent learning how to "sneak up on trees". Update: Caylen's outdoor Alki classes are over for the year, but will resume in the spring.
