I work in Newbury so it was the logical choice. After 'inspecting' the car they tried to convince me that the problem was that the brakes at the front needed replacing (to solve a rear brake issue!) and became very confrontational when I asked for a reason for this work being carried out. The best they could come up with was 'air in the brakes' - despite there being no sign of this. The staff I dealt with, one of who I presume to be the manager as he was in a shirt rather than the usual uniform, we're evasive, unhelpful and In the case of the manager he tried to be agressive and intimidating using scare tactics to try and get me to agree to the work. When I declined the work and picked the car up the wheels had not ever been taken off - the cable ties holding the wheel trims in are still in place. When pressed they said they had looked at the rear drums, opened and inspected them and found nothing wrong- an outright lie. Having now taken the car to my local mechanic to have the work carried out, there was a cylinder in the rear drum that had ceased - a £20 part - and nothing to do with the front brakes that I was told needed to be replaced. For peace of mind I also had the front brakes checked and they were found to be well within acceptable wear limits and perfectly safe to drive. Thankfully I am competent when it comes to cars and actually do a fair amount of my own maintainance so was able to spot a con but I'm sure many people would have bought into it and agreed the work - and it still wouldn't have passed an MOT afterwards. So, never again will I use Kwik Fit and I will do my very best to make others aware of their shoddy ways.

Think they have the facilities to fix tracking problems with cars as well. If they dont have the tyres in stock, they have to drive to their warehouse to get them but in my experience it didnt take more than 10 mins, plus if you phone up beforehand they will be there waiting for you. Once I reported it they got angry on me and blamed me for leaving money in the car. I understand I should have not left the money inside the car. But does that mean they nick it!!!. Be ware of them, they nick the small amount and guess what they can steal any original part of your car and fit any rubbish!!!. Just be aware of them. This is not all, they raised their voice at me and shown me the door and shut the door hard after me. It is not about money, but they blamed me instead of apologising and investigating the incident. I did not expect them to return my money and neither I asked for it. But just one liner Apology from them and assurance of looking into the incident would have satisfied me(Though they could have decided not to look into the incident, but what would have costed them to assure me to investigate the incident and apologise!!!!, no brain, no sense of speaking to customer. Simple attitude of keeping the customer happy would have not made me to write my pain here. Their behaviour pained me more than the money loss!!!

I went back into the car - took a picture of a warning sign and got back into the office to ask if the car was OK to drive. And again I was reassured that it was and they will sort it out for me on Monday. I understand that they wanted business and did not want me to go to a different garage. However when I started driving in 10 min my car rear wheel was in flames - we had to call fire engine, police and recovery vehicle. When we got to the garage the guy did not even say sorry. He said he never told me the car was safe and it was my word against his. This is so worrying! People risk other people's lives for money. Lie right into your face. I do wonder if they have guts to commit perjury when it comes to Court.

I was lucky that the incident happened not a block from Halfords, so we limped in there with no appointment, not even a call ahead -- just rolled in with a flat tyre, and they were able to take the car right away. They had to get the right kind of tyre from somewhere else, but that turned out to be only a 20-minute wait. I don't know how auto repair usually goes in the UK, but in the US, even a tyre change could've required hours of waiting. The mechanics were all nice people, too. I was feeling deeply embarrassed and discouraged, as an American who hadn't yet worked out how to drive on the left, but everyone I spoke with was cheerful and helpful, as if they actually enjoy working there, and no one tut-tutted at the damage or gave me any hint of an attitude; it may sound like a small thing, but being treated with friendly respect when I was feeling like a foreign idiot meant a lot to me -- their cheerfulness and professionalism helped to steady my nerves so I was able to face driving again once the car was repaired. And the efficiency meant we were back on the road in under an hour. Fortunately, I quickly got much better at driving on the left, so there were no more incidents, but if there had been any need for more repairs, I would've wanted to come to Halfords.
