At least once a month there is a free public concert...the genre of music can vary. I've been to a Barbershop Quartet concert here which I thoroughly enjoyed. They also have a variety of events each month.

It does have lots of cool old buildings, some unusual stuff and some cool new things like an impressive library. The library was built about ten years ago but looks like it has been here for a long, long time. Just kind of blends in so well with the surrounding area and is ascetically so pleasant to look at. The cool design, architecture and porch has a very small town welcoming feel that is completely different from the usual recently built, functional, but ascetically boring libraries that are so typical in this part of Florida. This library looks like it would be quite at home in some small New England town or island. The inside of the library is comfy but certainly not roomy. It does manage to fit all the modern conveniences like computers, periodicals, DVDs and of course a nice collection of books. Definitely has a pragmatic side to it's wonderful aesthetics. Best of all it has a huge bulletin board that lists all the local events and programs. A great place to keep track of what's going on in this quirky little town. The librarians I met were patient, friendly and sweet, every though the library was crowded and they were probably wondering why the hell I was asking all these stupid questions. One of them took the time to tell me the story about how all the books were moved from the old library next door. They just formed a human chain and handed the books, one by one, to the new building. Something that would have been very cool to watch. The Lake Helen library is certainly not the largest or most useful library around. However it definitely one of the coolest and welcoming.

The exterior looks like a fresh renovation of an old house and inside there are modern lighting and window touches. The library operationally functions well. Books selections are a little light but take advantage of the county wide borrwing policies to flesh out any missing items. Digital options are many starting with Overdrive, Axis360 and Freading for books and a really nice addition via the Zinio app to read a large selection of digital magazines that normally have to be paid for. After inspection, this is a great library that packs a lot of punch in a small package. Wise use of space and providing media that people will actually use instead of accumulating junk helps this library thrive.

Because this is a part of the VCPL System you need not worry that they may not have the book, audio book or other item(s) you may be looking for. The staff can request the item(s) you're looking for to be routed here from 1 of the other libraries in the system. They will also be more than happy to show you how to make your own requests both at the library and online. Because I live less than 2 miles from this library, it is my primary library within the VCPL System. In fact, I'm here this morning because 2 books I reserved online arrived and I came to check them out. This library, as well as the others in the VCPL System each have their own schedule of events for all ages. The WiFi can be a little tricky as it cut out twice while I was writing this review but that could be a rare thing specific to this day. Overall, I would most definitely recommend people in Orange City to visit and support their local library. One thing I'll add for the benefit of those reading who may need to speak with a Social Worker, VCPL System has a Social Worker in the Library Program. I don't believe the Social Worker meets at this specific location but I do know the Deland branch (and others) do have Social Workers regularly. Upon arriving, the kids section is on your immediate right. Considering how small the library is the children's section was well stocked with books and puzzles and they even had a summer scavenger hunt throughout the library with printed out pictures. The Sanford Welcome Center is located in the building that was the first U.S. Post Office in the…read moreCity of Sanford. The red brick Classical Revival building was built in 1917 by Algernon Blair of Montgomery. James Wetmore served as the supervising architect. The building is typical of government buildings of the time and it is trimmed in Georgia sandstone and white sandstone pillars. The original exterior is still intact. After a new post office was built two blocks away in 1962 it became the city library and in 1975 part of the Seminole County library system. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I love the architecture of this building and today it is looking better than ever as the Sanford Welcome Center. Their mission is to provide education and information as they market Sanford as "an arts, culture, recreation, and historic destination." I popped in during my visit to town and was warmly greeted by Rosie. I had a great chat with her. Inside the welcome center you will find public restrooms, cheap snacks and drinks, attraction brochures, maps, and places to stay and dining recommendations. The Chamber of Commerce has an office. Downtown historic Sanford is experiencing a renaissance. Check in here to learn about events, food and drink, and one of a kind experiences in this charming town.

Most of the time they have an art gallery in the back containing art from local residence. There's always someone there to help you if you need to get advice of where to eat or things to do. They also have bathrooms and a small place to sit if you want to rest and get out of the heat and check out the Sanford newspaper. I come here at least once a week there is always something different to see each week. Walking distance to many restaurants, shops and the beautiful Lake Monroe lakefront.

Most libraries in Central Florida tend to be relatively new but frequently just look like big boxes that happen to hold books and computers. The Deland Library was definitely designed to be more than just storage for a bunch of books. The library has a very nice exterior with palm trees all around and the inside is spacious and uses natural light very well. Some great old photos of Deland are scatter around as well as some interesting and eclectic sculptures. The library has a very impressive genealogy and local history room and some interesting programs for both adults and kids. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and one of them even gave us a tour of their wonderful library A very nicely designed branch library that manages to do the usually libraries tasks extremely well without forgetting that there is more to a great library than just a bunch of books.

The campus has since improved and relapsed into archaic tradition since I've last seen the beautiful red brick buildings, and I'd like to touch on some things I've noticed. For one thing the Raider center is a great addition to the Sanford/Lake Mary campus and I would go a great way just to work out there were my sciatica and Arthritis not so severe. Geoff and staff are delightful, always making sure to attend to the needs of the patrons and dare I say just so polite to conversate with! However, some areas of campus are far less attractive. One of my biggest qualms is with the bird population. I have been on numerous accounts been followed, harassed, chased, and at times mocked by the so called 'endangered' sandhill cranes. Their evil eyes are most unwelcome in my life and I religiously avoid them at all costs. They seem to know me, and regardless of where I am they always seem to find me. Birds hold grudges... nevertheless they are a dark splotch on the pristine canvas of this institution and were I not an avid PETA enthusiast I would recommend complete annihilation of these terrible creatures. Animals deserve life- but these monsters deserve despair as they have caused me despair all these many years. The campus is beautiful! I'd highly recommend it to any scholars searching to gain their AA or equivalent. Go Raiders! Always remember, bird is the word. Except Sandhill Cranes. -Shelley 5/5/23
