This is perhaps the worst experience I have ever had with a business. (Although he's a sole proprietorship so maybe it doesn't count). I dropped off a Chinese scroll for repair back in October 2022. I was told it would be ready in a month, in time to surprise my husband for our one year wedding anniversary in November (it was the Paper anniversary and the scroll belonged to his late grandmother). I called the day before it was promised - no response. Deadline passed. Further calls and emails either went unanswered or he would pick up, say "I'll call you back" and then never would. He finally said there'd been a death in the family (which made me feel terrible, but I'm not sure why he couldn't have said that the first time I called??) I waited months. Christmas came and went. So did January. When I tried checking in (about once a month or so) he seemed not to be able to remember the project. I finally got my scroll back after saying that I was driving over to pick it up the next day, finished or not. Then mysteriously it became ready. It looks . . . ok, I guess? Some of the things that were promised (such as doing paint touch-ups) were not done but at this point I just wanted my scroll back since it had such deep sentimental value. But this entire experience was a huge waste of time & money and a giant source of stress for me. Very unprofessional, would not recommend. read more

M. Alam was fantastic!!! He restored my Lladro Hawaiian girl porcelain In 10 minutes!! The flower that the figurine holds in her hand broke off but now you can't tell at all. I had a very special carved balsa wood sculpture piece that was made for me over 30 years ago that was badly damaged in a recent cross-country move. I was certain it was destroyed beyond repair. Mr. Alam assured me that he could not only repair, but that he could make it better than ever. He did a magnificent job; better than I could have ever expected. I recommend him highly and will certainly use him again if the need arises. Outstanding work and great attention to detail--I am so pleased that a piece that had such personal meaning to me could be brought back to life like this! read more

I contacted Alam by email, describing damage to a ceramic sculpture and providing three pictures. He responded indicating he could do the repair for $150. However, when I showed up at his shop, he increased his estimated to $350. He claimed he did not know there was a small chip that needed to be filled in, even though I described it in my note and it was shown in one of the pics. For no apparent reason, he then proceeded to derisively suggest I probably paid $50 for the artwork. He may be a good craftsman, I'll never know. But beware the bait and switch. read more

I have a painting in a wooden frame that fell off the wall in my house. The frame cracked and the painting tore fairly significantly. The restorer I had used previously died a couple of years ago. But I got a referral to Mr. Alam from a local furniture restorer. Mr. Alam may not be fast but he did a terrific restoration of the picture! When I got home I looked at where the tear was with a magnifying glass and could see no evidence of damage. It was well worth the wait!! read more

I have had the pleasure of working with Alam on restoration of some very, very special family antiques. His skill and workmanship are amazing. He restored a cut glass bowl that had shattered into many small pieces with such precision that to this day I would not even see or know that it had been damaged. Amazing work! I also had a delicate and small decorative egg that was shattered and seems completely a lost cause. This too he was able to restore into perfect condition, again just amazing work.
