I'm not crazy....well not anymore…read more In all seriousness, let's be honest with ourselves. There are times when we become overwhelmed and need some professional objective advice on how best to process and move forward in a healthy way. I decided after a pretty telling incident that I needed to speak with a counselor about breaking bad habits and becoming more self aware. The neighborhood is in Old Louisville and the Counseling Center is located right across the street from Dizzy Whiz. The atmosphere is like visiting your Grandma's house. When you walk into the reception area there are big comfy arm chairs, candle's lit, and plants. The reception area is usually empty since the counselors are working, but just relax and take a seat. I had the pleasure of seeing two counselors at this location. My first experience was with Nancy Waters. Nancy did one-on-one counseling with me. Nancy was very compassionate and was always so welcoming. During my first visit, we talked about my expectations, my major concerns, and the flexibility I needed. Nancy was able to address all of my wants and gave me great flexibility for scheduling and payment. Nancy supported the format I needed to keep my sessions on the right track to accomplish my goals. Now everyone is different, but I was able to feel confident I could work independently on my "opportunities for improvement" without counseling after a year. I am still able to check back in with Nancy whenever I need. During our time together she even allowed me to call her on her day off to help with a stressful situation that I needed advise on. The other counselor I got to see was Dr. Peter Salerno. Dr. Salerno had a more limited schedule and set payment fee, but his sessions were just as insightful. I met with Dr. Salerno for relationship counseling. I was slightly overwhelmed being in my first long term relationship and got some great tools on how to communicate and work through conflict. I never had to contact Dr. Salerno after hours, but did receive homework that I worked with my partner on. I apply the lessons I learned from my counselors at Old Louisville Counseling Center to my daily life everyday. For the transitional and lost feeling, I felt only a year ago, I now feel more confident about the decisions I make and have great tools for moving forward into a healthy future. Ask yourself now, how does this review make you feel? :-)

I worried they would pressure me to take needless drugs because they viewed 1 as not enough. As for the other nurse, she needs to listen and learn. I told her that 50 years of psych drugs had not shown me any drug that cured my sleep disorder. I backed up my view by telling her a neurologist told me there is no cure for Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder. Yet she told me her ordinary psych drugs would help. She mentioned that I might need evaluation by a sleep clinic, unaware that I've tried 2 and concluded they mostly are there to help sell sleep apnea machines. In a sense, I told her "Been there done that." Finally, I told them that I'd go elsewhere for a prescriber. I didn't yell or curse, but they or someone said I'd been "abusive". What a fashionable word. No person at Bridgehaven inquired of me regarding this alleged abuse. Bridgehaven just stopped returning my calls and then told me my case had been closed because I quit coming. Well, I thought I needed appts with the therapist to be coming there, and she did not return my calls. If I had a memory lapse and should have just been showing up, Bridgehaven should have called and touched base with me before CLOSING my file. Was I blackballed because I doubted the expertise of the nursing staff? In summary, I not only felt the nurses' knowledge lacking, but that they might be resistant to learning from patients.

This is the EPIC, TOP place to hang out, learn, love, be accepted, teach, create, etc. for someone that has mental illness. I love everyone that works here! They work so hard to help the clients that come here and to help the public learn more about mental illness and schizophrenia. They are truly a life-changing place to land. They have a yearly art sale and I can't wait to support this. The clients are amazing and the staff that supports them is even greater! s3

Katelyn Mensing has been a lifesaver for our family, as our daughter has experienced psychosis…read more During my daughter's first episode, I was lost. The mental healthcare system is confusing, and accessibility can be limited if you don't know where to turn. We were desperate - we got a list of potential therapists from a hospital and reviewed the bios of the therapists. Katelyn's bio stood out, so we called her first and left a message. Before we could even call the third therapist, Katelyn was calling us back. She was willing to see my daughter that evening, staying very late to accommodate her first therapy appointment. Since that day, Katelyn has been the single most important person in my daughter's recovery and healing. What is as important to me is how available Katelyn has been to support our family as we supported our daughter through her most difficult times in life. I am grateful to share that our daughter is healing after seeing Katelyn consistently for the past few years. I would recommend Katelyn and her team to anyone who is seeking help during a difficult time of mental health.

We are finding that trauma is the root of most mental health disorders and neuro-therapies have proven to be a powerful bottom-up approach to treat it. We use neuro-therapies (Brainspotting, EMDR, and Flash) to reprocess the traumatic memory that holds the pain and this reprograms the belief system, releases the negative feelings, and moves the body sensations created from your trauma out of your body. Once this process is complete, you will find that you will think, feel, and behave differently. We also use IFS and/or Ego States Therapy in conjunction with the Neuro-therapies and this will help you have more compassion for yourself and enable you to make connections to why you do the things that you do.
