Considering all the stress that day-to-day life can bring, work-related or otherwise, it can be hard to slow down and take a breath on your own. Counting/breathing exercises or meditation tracks can be helpful at times, but in-person human guidance is something that can never truly be replaced. Megan's tone and attitude in our session was warm with concern, care, and attentive presence. Even in a group setting, where I'm normally prone to social anxiety and "Am I doing this right?" introspection, I felt myself ease into a level of relaxation and comfort. Visiting her required less than an hour of my day; it was time that I was happy to give, and time that she was more than ready to use for transforming my negative thoughts/anxieties into positive and in-the-moment reflections. I showed up dreading the humdrum activities of tomorrow, but I left enjoying the air in my lungs, feeling the energy in my body, and savoring even the smallest details of an average day's routine. The short and sweet of it all: I'd definitely recommend her as guide to mindfulness and mental relaxation!

Dr Kevin Chapman is an amazing therapist and a compassionate, warm and funny human being…read more I've struggled with ocd and anxiety for years and have seen several therapists, to no avail. I ended up learning a lot on my own and when I heard Dr Chapman on a podcast from England (ocd stories) I heard him speak a language that the other true experts on ocd and anxiety spoke. I contacted dr Chapman and began working with him in March. He worked with me every week for about three months and I improved significantly over that time. I did things I didn't think I could ever do. I'm extremely grateful to him for helping me get my life and my confidence back. I'm continuing to work with him and each week I can't believe how much he, a man who doesn't suffer from ocd, understands about my disorder. It's absolutely amazing. After 10 years of suffering, I'm happier than I've been for years and I'm continuing to work with him because he continues to offer helpful things to improve my life in other ways (like perfectionism ). If you suffer from ocd or anxiety --in any form-- do yourself a favor and contact Dr Chapman. He's amazing. And better than that, he's a terrific human being. And that's also important for your recovery. You'll want to do your best for him. And he'll help you to do the best for yourself, to be the best version possible of yourself.

I will say that my phobia(of vomit) was controlling my life so much that it's the whole reason I got on Yelp in the first place. I did not trust places that I wanted to eat, even really nice places. I was not leaving my house, and would be near a panic if I ate food anywhere beyond a 15 minute drive from my home. I would not exercise much for fear of overexertion. I love trying new foods, but I was not even doing that. I would not go out anywhere near a bar at night, I would not hang out with friends until I trusted they could hold their liquor, I barely ate meat because the sensation of digesting it made me think I was nauseous. This was my life as of August 26, 2016. At that point, I was tired of having my phobia. I was dreading my honeymoon (October of the same year) because I would need to go in a plane and someone could get airsick. When I saw on his website that he advertised getting people through debilitating phobias with such a short turnaround, I bit the bullet and signed myself up for what I knew would be a tough couple months. I can tell you that it worked, but if you're anything like I am, you won't believe that it will work for YOU. I can't tell you that either. What I can tell you is that Dr. Chapman will be wonderful to work with, he will talk you out of all of your avoidance, and you will find yourself able to do things that have been off-limits for years. Yes, each week I would come in dreading what I was going to be exposed to, but it was never a surprise. I went from literally not being able to see the word "vomit" in August, to laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes at a video of people getting sick, with the sound all the way up, even when my stomach was not feeling "right" (I have a tender tummy). In August, it would have made my heart race to even picture myself doing that. It took less than 6 months to fix something I had fought with my whole life, something that has hurt friendships for me, something that kept me from taking trips and enjoying food, something that had even affected my job choice. Now it is February of 2017, and all I need to fear are things like bad neighborhoods and hearing sounds in the basement when I'm home alone. I've had the confidence to try out a new diet (ketogenic) and exercise. I know that mental health is costly and out-of-pocket, but I PROMISE YOU- if you are looking Dr.Chapman up on Yelp because you feel like you maybe need to fix something that is controlling you, it is well worth the money to go see him. Think of all the life you are being robbed of for free right now.

The mental healthcare system is confusing, and accessibility can be limited if you don't know where to turn. We were desperate - we got a list of potential therapists from a hospital and reviewed the bios of the therapists. Katelyn's bio stood out, so we called her first and left a message. Before we could even call the third therapist, Katelyn was calling us back. She was willing to see my daughter that evening, staying very late to accommodate her first therapy appointment. Since that day, Katelyn has been the single most important person in my daughter's recovery and healing. What is as important to me is how available Katelyn has been to support our family as we supported our daughter through her most difficult times in life. I am grateful to share that our daughter is healing after seeing Katelyn consistently for the past few years. I would recommend Katelyn and her team to anyone who is seeking help during a difficult time of mental health.

We are finding that trauma is the root of most mental health disorders and neuro-therapies have proven to be a powerful bottom-up approach to treat it. We use neuro-therapies (Brainspotting, EMDR, and Flash) to reprocess the traumatic memory that holds the pain and this reprograms the belief system, releases the negative feelings, and moves the body sensations created from your trauma out of your body. Once this process is complete, you will find that you will think, feel, and behave differently. We also use IFS and/or Ego States Therapy in conjunction with the Neuro-therapies and this will help you have more compassion for yourself and enable you to make connections to why you do the things that you do.

I'm not crazy....well not anymore…read more In all seriousness, let's be honest with ourselves. There are times when we become overwhelmed and need some professional objective advice on how best to process and move forward in a healthy way. I decided after a pretty telling incident that I needed to speak with a counselor about breaking bad habits and becoming more self aware. The neighborhood is in Old Louisville and the Counseling Center is located right across the street from Dizzy Whiz. The atmosphere is like visiting your Grandma's house. When you walk into the reception area there are big comfy arm chairs, candle's lit, and plants. The reception area is usually empty since the counselors are working, but just relax and take a seat. I had the pleasure of seeing two counselors at this location. My first experience was with Nancy Waters. Nancy did one-on-one counseling with me. Nancy was very compassionate and was always so welcoming. During my first visit, we talked about my expectations, my major concerns, and the flexibility I needed. Nancy was able to address all of my wants and gave me great flexibility for scheduling and payment. Nancy supported the format I needed to keep my sessions on the right track to accomplish my goals. Now everyone is different, but I was able to feel confident I could work independently on my "opportunities for improvement" without counseling after a year. I am still able to check back in with Nancy whenever I need. During our time together she even allowed me to call her on her day off to help with a stressful situation that I needed advise on. The other counselor I got to see was Dr. Peter Salerno. Dr. Salerno had a more limited schedule and set payment fee, but his sessions were just as insightful. I met with Dr. Salerno for relationship counseling. I was slightly overwhelmed being in my first long term relationship and got some great tools on how to communicate and work through conflict. I never had to contact Dr. Salerno after hours, but did receive homework that I worked with my partner on. I apply the lessons I learned from my counselors at Old Louisville Counseling Center to my daily life everyday. For the transitional and lost feeling, I felt only a year ago, I now feel more confident about the decisions I make and have great tools for moving forward into a healthy future. Ask yourself now, how does this review make you feel? :-)

Fortunately, Nova accepts my insurance-- but honestly, even if they didn't, I'd want to go here. Therapy is one of those things that everyone could benefit from but people don't like to talk about. I've worked in the mental health field for over 12 years and can tell you, there's nothing embarrassing about asking for help or just needing a 3rd party person to listen. Validation is important, and that's exactly what I got from my visits with Carrie. It sucks to be trans. It's nothing anyone wishes for, it just is. It also sucks that you have to have someone verify that you are trans in order to make changes to your own body -- but Carrie gets that, and is gentle and understanding. She understands the anxiety and bravery that it takes to tell your friends, family, employer, etc. Talking with her felt very natural, like chatting with an old friend. Our sessions also provided me with validations and in a few cases, new ways of thinking and courage to face some things and people I didn't want to. When she felt it was appropriate, she provided me with my letter to start T. I can tell you, that was one of the best days of my life -- and I couldn't have done it without her help. I recommend anyone trans or cis to see Carrie. She's just a spectacular human. Very comforting, non-judgmental and validating. That's like the therapist equivalent of Cool, Funny, Useful.
