Hooked Fish bar - The 'small' portion of chips

Having lived in Mexico, one of my big bugbears of life in the UK is the lack of any hot, cheap and…read morefresh street food. I suppose the nearest thing we have is takeaway chips, and this was exactly what I was in the mood for one freezing cold February night when I was walking home. As luck would have it I spotted Hooked, which looked a bit more upmarket than your typical fish n chips place, but was similarly reasonably priced. For £1.80 I was given a huge plate of freshly cooked chips and was able to sit in at one of the tables in the (very clean) restaurant area at no extra cost! Free ketchup too. The chips, whilst not the best I'd ever had, did taste fresh and were nice and chunky too, which is the way I feel all chips should be. The staff were very friendly and welcoming too. A great spot for some quick, cheap and hot grub!

Gluten free fish and chips- wow!…read more We came here after learning about their dedicated gluten free fryer and menu items. The takeaway line was pretty steady but we ate in. The server was great with our kids and gave some sound advice on menu options. We had the haddock and cod fish and chips, and the kids had fish bites - which ended up being a bit more substantial. If we go back we'll choose those. The staff was really friendly and gave us space. Not everyone may appreciate that, but the pace was perfect for us. We would have liked a bit larger drink menu, but the current offerings work for the menu.

A great find near Hammersmith Station…read more There are many places to choose from in this area. This is why it is so desirable to live here. We were looking for a place for brunch and saw this tiny restaurant. It is small but we were able to use the one large table for our group of eight. As one could guess, they specialize in the Bretagne style of crepes (contain some buckwheat flour). Everyone ordered savory crepes (I was foolishly thinking about a dessert crepe afterwards. Big mistake. All the savory crepes we ordered (variations of different cheeses, ham, bacon, potatoes, and other great ingredients) were exceptional but there was no way I could eat more. I cannot say enough about how delicious they were. I had one with bacon strips (smoky and delicious), with Gruyère, and a sunny side up egg on top. It was my way of finding an American bacon and egg breakfast here. I was not disappointed (but may be back home now). I will be back to try the sweet crepes next. Also on the menus was a lunch with crepe, salad and a cider. Given the place the owners come from, I should have tried it as well. Next time. They did show a two for one happy hour in the late afternoon which would be nice as well. If I lived nearby this would be a regular.

My wife had a crepe with Emmental cheese, ham and spinach and I had the Fruity Sweet crepe gluten free with strawberries, raspberries and banana. Both were large and delicious. Service was great, friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is cute.

But the Gate is close to Eventim Apollo, where I was seeing a show later, so the convenience couldn't be beat. Service was about what I expected for this caliber of restaurant. My partner and I are low fuss but the servers were prepared to offer suggestions and wine pairings for those interested. As for the food, we enjoyed what we had--her main was a curry dish and mine a sort of deconstructed dragon roll. But our favorite part was the matcha cake cup we shared at the end. Perfectly decadent. I don't think I'd say the Gate is a must visit for London as a whole but it's a great option if you're in or planning to visit Hammersmith.

Once seated, you will enjoy the immense window that allows The Gate to be lit without the need for artificial light. The decor is simple, a mixture between minimal, arte povera and industrial; a style that seems to be a must, if you want your bar to be instagramable and hipster at the same time. Everything is completed with green leafy plants and industrial style nude bulbs hanging from the ceiling. The jazz music in the background makes the atmosphere enveloping and sophisticated, making you feel like a freelancer drinking black americano in Brooklyn. The artichoke terrine with a dried tomato paste and grilled bread left me confused, it was too salty for my taste, not too bad if eaten with bread and its paste. The presentation of the dish was pretty and the bread was freshly baked. As per the main dish I had a beetroot burger with "fries" and a little salad with vinaigrette. The salad was fresh and tasty with Dijon mustard vinaigrette. The burger instead was rubbery, pink very processed patty that can easily be found at the supermarket. The matchstick chips were too thin, on the plate more as a decoration in my opinion. The service is really slow, even when the restaurant isn't crowded. They actually completely forgot that after the starters we were still waiting for the main course. we had to remind them after waiting more than one hour. Luckily, we got a fresh baked baguette and some olive on the house for the inconvenience.
