Mac Lab is a small shop next to Ming's BBQ on Pleasant Hill Road that specializes in macaroons. They take pride in their craft and do a great job. We've come several times, and we typically aren't huge fans of macaroons. We've tried just about all their flavors, but the earl grey, lychee, elder flower, and salted caramel stuck out most to me, mostly because of their very strong, true, and natural tasting flavor. While a little pricier than your typical macaroon (about $2+), it is worth it for the experience. You can tell how much attention to detail is put into each macaroon. They're picture perfect, satisfy any sweet tooth, and are perfect for gifts. While you're at it, try the unicorn macaroon too (it's fruity pebbles flavored), which is ~$4. In addition to selling macaroons, Mac Lab also sells creme brulee, coffee, tea, snacks (toast, salads, soup). The location is perfect and right in the middle of Pleasant Hill. The interior is nicely decorated. It's pretty small with just a few tables, so I wouldn't recommend coming here to hang out. The staff and owners are very personable and helpful. Overall, I would highly recommend Mac Lab as a place to try, whether it be to satisfy your sweet tooth, or to just try something different. read more

My bf and I stop by Mac Lab fairly often when I'm craving macarons and creme brûlée. My favorite flavors are the Salted Caramel, Rose Lychee and Green Tea. They're crunchy when you bite into them and then chewy. So good! The creme brûlée is a hit and miss for me, there's day when it's really creamy and just the right texture, then there's day when it taste really eggy. I guess it depends on who's making them that day. Currently for the summer, they have the Diary Project popup serving soft serve ice cream, affogato and macaron ice cream. Bf and I opted for the soft serve with with chocolate, matcha and the 24k gold, and the matcha affogato. The soft serve is good! Not too sweet and very creamy. My significant other really likes Parisian culture. This was the perfect place for Macaroons. The people were friendly and helpful picking out the best options. I didn't think I was a fan of macaroons, but the truth is, I had just never tasted a real macaroon until now! This little gem is in a very unassuming location in a strip mall off pleasant hill rd, but it is well worth a visit! Their macaroons are almost too pretty to eat (almost)! I thought I'd like the elderflower or rose & lychee flavors the best, but my favorite were the more tropical flavors like mango and guava. They have a Dairy Project popup shop in there right now and are dishing out some amazing soft serve alongside those beautiful macaroons. I got the soft serve topped with espresso and it tasted like the strongest, best coffee ice cream you've ever had. My friends got the gold coated soft serve...because, well gold. I came late into the night, around 8:30ish, hoping to get some sweets for the night. They close at 9pm, so this review might be a bit biased. I will update once I go earlier in the day. People that is expecting this place to be similar to Sweet Hut might be disappointed because this place is much smaller and the selection of pastries and sweets are much more limited. The decor is super cute with some comfortable seating areas. This is a small place, so large groups might have a problem finding seats if the place is busy. This could definitely be a cute date spot for some quick bites and coffee. I ordered 2 macarons-rose & lychee and green tea. The macarons were harder than other places. And the red velvet cupcake I ordered was a bit dry for my taste. I also ordered a green tea creme puff and it was delicious! I did not order any drinks, but I will definitely update next time I go back for drinks. The prices were average I think, $2 per macarons and about $4 per cupcake and pastry. Lannie contacted me on Instagram apologizing for the macarons and stating that they were having some technical difficulties due to the humidity control. She also stated that she will make it up next time I come in. This is what great customer service looks like, she acknowledged the fault in her products and is trying to fix the problem. I make sure to go to Mac Lab every time I'm in Duluth. They have a large variety of flavors and it's difficult to pick which ones to get even though I get a dozen! My favorites are the coffee and earl grey, but their fruitier flavors are delicious as well. Unfortunately, these macarons don't hold very well. I've had macarons from places like 'Lette and Laduree that would put in the fridge the same day and would taste just as good for the next few days; however, Mac Lab's macarons start tasting stale the same day I got it even if it's been in the fridge. I wish they held for longer because it's hard to finish 12 macarons in one sitting. All but one of my 12 were stale :( We had time to spare so we decided to try a latte. We decided to go with the Mac Lab Special Latte, which has hazelnut and vanilla. It was so good, but definitely on the sweeter side for those who don't like that in their coffee! The decor is simple and clean, nothing out of the ordinary. They also play nice, calming music. I would come here again just for the latte and the environment. Mac Lab has made a name for itself over the years. I remember when it first opened and it was a pretty unknown, exclusive cafe to get macarons in Duluth. Nowadays it's become IG famous, people drive miles to visit the cafe, and its even been featured on big media corporations like Insider Food. The cafe is white and pristine, everything from the ceiling to the ground is wiped perfectly clean and the whole atmosphere gives off this dainty, delicate feel to it. You feel special when you step inside like you're going to a tea party in some Parisian bistro. To your left is a brightly lit case of a rainbow assortment of macarons. It's almost like a jewelry box and you can see all the macarons neatly placed before you. A few tables and chairs line the right side of the cafe. The OG regulars would know they used to have organic chemistry structures on the tables but it seems like they have erased them entirely! Their macarons are really out of this world. I've made macarons in the past and understand how painstakingly hard it is to get them perfect. The shell of their macarons are so pristine, you can't see any air bubbles, bumps, or cracks in them. They also have a beautiful sheen to them as well. It's crispy as you bite through the shell, then you're greeted by the pillowy and airy interior, and finally the soft and creamy filling in the center. My favorite has got to be the rose lychee. It wasn't overwhelmingly one flavor or the other and had a beautiful marriage between the sweetness of the lychee and the floral notes of the rose. Mac Lab is truly an experience. The staff are always friendly, nice, and welcoming to my friends who visit for the first time. The macarons are a feast for your eyes, nose, and mouth. Love this little bakery joint. On weekdays, it makes for a great study spot. I'm here right now and it's 5pm and I'm here chilling with one other customer. I love how they have outlets at every booth, too! One downfall would be if it's busy, there are only 6 tables because of the limited space. The environment is super light and spring-y. I love the white furniture and how bright it makes the place. The fresh flowers on the tables bring for a nice touch, too. The macaroons are so delicious! They're not too sweet, which is like a huge thing for me. They're perfectly made! I love the variety of flavors they have. My favorites are black sesame, Nutella, salted caramel, and blueberry! I've grown to appreciate macarons after attempting to bake them myself. The almond flour ingredient is pricey, and the entire process requires very accurate measurement and patience. This is why I'm okay with the steep $2+ price tag of one little macaron. The interior decor is very cute and very picturesque. It's perfect for beautiful instagram pictures. However, there are only about 5 tables so it can be hard to find a seat during peak hours. I especially enjoy the macaron sundae. It consists of 3 big macaron ice cream sandwiches served on top of dry ice. Um. The menu was so limited. Macaroons, cupcakes, cookies, and other pastries such as the orange cranberry scone I had last night. I suppose the treats vary depending on the supply and demand for that day. As for their drink menu, you get either caffeine or more caffeine: coffee or tea. I was sadden to know there was no bubble tea to be found here. No biggie, but why not offer other drink selections that doesn't have caffeine? The staff was friendly and informative, and the place was neat and orderly. Well, it was a Wednesday evening so there was hardly anyone there. I looooove French macarons and could not wait to try Mac Lab. This shop is very quaint and welcoming. All of the white and clean lines make it look very relaxing for grabbing some tea and getting work done. If that's all you're looking for, check them out. Now the macarons look beautiful in the display case, and at a cost of $2.25 per macaron I definitely had high hopes. Unfortunately, I wasn't blown away. They weren't too sweet, had the perfect meringue cookie and a decent flavored filling. However, the filling was the major contributor to me not being blown away....it just wasn't that flavorful. I'd expect a mango macaron to taste somewhat like mango, but it was more on the bland side. A cute place with cute staff! Most people I've seen (i.e. me) come for the photo ops but Mac Lab doesn't disappoint with their macarons. They come in all sorts of flavors - my favorites are matcha and earl grey! There are also special macarons that rotate in and out of the shop. These cost a bit more but are always especially aesthetic. :^) Their entire selection of macarons are laid out at the front counter but they also have a small drink menu as well. What a cute place! I'm a bit of a macaron snob. Most French macarons I've had are too dense or too sweet (sometimes both!). I got 6 macarons on my first visit to Mac Lab (earl grey, strawberry, mango, raspberry lemonade, matcha green tea, and the special of the day, which was pina colada). Are the macarons fresh here? Before I begin, I will say that the flavors were on point. The selection was great as I felt compelled to sample damn near everything they had to offer in case. Now. As age is apparently playing on my taste buds, I find my sweet tooth doesn't take over like it used to. That's meant that a box of macarons will typically last me a couple days. This isn't my first rodeo with macarons being a couple days old. We got our box on a Saturday afternoon after we spent some time in Duluth for sweets-related activities. We had every intention to bring home a box as we've struck out with Mac Lab on a Tuesday when they're closed. We like to save the (perceived) best for last as we work our way through the box. So Saturday, we made it through 2 macarons. They were good enough to look forward to later. FFwd to Monday when we get them out of the fridge for another go. All but one flavor was stale. Meh. We still muscled through our box to at least taste. Again. Flavors were on point. Lesson learned. If you're getting macarons from here, make sure you're eating the the same day! read more

Great addition to the Duluth food scene! Macaroons are affordable ($2-$2.50 for the standard size ones and $3.50ish for the special designs) with the perfect consistency and flavor. We had the pistachio, the rose-lychee, the Oreo, and the seasonal reindeer flavor (I want to say chocolate but could not fully distinguish). To pair, I got an iced orange-coconut milk latte, which wasn't too sweet with real bits of orange peel. Worked great to offset the Macarons. Would highly recommend--presume there are more options on the weekend, but the atmosphere was quiet and conducive to studying if that's what you're looking for on the weekdays. read more

Sometimes you just need a unicorn macaron, you feel me? Drove out about 25 minutes to get here and thank goodness we got there when we did. It's not a large place and there was already a line formed when we got there. As we slowly crept up to the counter, I realized there were only four unicorn macarons left. I stood there praying to all the unicorn gods that the people in front of us wouldn't snag all of them. The prayers were answered. The people ahead only asked for one. The macaroons were pretty good very soft and delicate. I basically ordered every flavor for a Christmas party. I really liked the fruity macaroons for example, strawberry, passion fruit, mango etc... Prices are reasonable macaroons usually are a little expensive but it was worth trying. They offer a 12 box and 6 box if you want to buy for yourself or for a certain occasion. I wish they had a 4 boxed macaroon set. For me personally 6 is too much if you wanted to give gifts to your friends, teachers, or even stocking stuffers they would fit perfectly. I cannot possibly put into words how amazing this place is. I don't even care for macarons until I had my very first MacLab creation. The freaking pistachio ice cream sandwich has a special place in my cold, black heart. I tried to save some for my sister-in-law and ended up finishing the whole damn thing while driving a measly 30 minutes back. It is pretty pricey, but the macs are huge and there are just so many to choose from, it's hard to not buy every single flavor. Best macaroons I've ever had, but... I've only had macaroons from Mozart Bakery and from friends, so not much to compare to. Mac Lab is located in the shopping center with Iron Age, Mango Six, Melting Pot, Zero C, Haru Ichiban, etc. The place has a white interior, so it feels very bright inside. Very cute cafe feel with limited seating. Mac Lab has a good assortment of unique macaroon flavors, and you can actually taste the difference between each macaroon. My girlfriend bought me a pack of 6 to share (it's pretty pricey; ~$13 or 14 for 6 macaroons), and they were all delicious. I tried: blueberry, coffee, earl grey, rose lychee, green tea, and elderflower. I enjoyed every bite of every flavor! However, my personal favorites were coffee and earl grey. I was really excited about the coffee flavor, because it had a very strong coffee taste, with a very slight bitterness. What I dream of in any coffee flavor dessert. There's a flavor for everyone, so try out an assortment! After giving it a lot of thought, Mac Lab is probably my favorite dessert place in all of the Duluth area, and that is saying a lot given the diverse amount of desserts in the area, though Mac Lab does have the niche market on macarons. I always make sure to visit if I'm ever in the area. It's definitely a must if I already find myself in the plaza eating next door at Ming's BBQ or something. The interior is very hip, cute, and trendy. The side is lined with tables, there is a couch, and a fair amount of decorations on the wall without being too gaudy. The whole place seems "grammable." Depending on when you come, the place can be fairly crowded and you may need to take your macarons to go. Service is very good and they're willing to walk you through their desserts. As for their desserts... oh boy. I have never been disappointed by anything I have ordered from Mac Lab, even beyond macarons! Some flavors are better than others, but none are bad really, it's just a matter of preference. My personal favorite macarons are the Rose Lychee and Pistachio. I will say the prices of the macarons usually prevent me from getting more than two at a time, but it is well worth it. I believe the more trendy and expensive macaron designs (i.e., unicorn) are fairly plain in taste and not worth the price other than to take a few pictures. Outside of their macarons, their ice cream is delicious! I have tried their macaron ice cream (ice cream sandwiched in between two large macarons), their soft serve dipped in matcha with a macaron on the side, and their macaron sundae (only available on weekends). With all the hype around Mac Lab, I had really been wanting to check it out. The first time I tried to, it was on a Tuesday and it was closed. Womp. (My fault as I should have checked their hours). When I finally was able to come in, I was excited for their flavors and ended up taking home about 12. I was a bit disappointed to find out that they don't have any "box deals" where buying a dozen would be cheaper than 12 individual ones. I was also sorely disappointed that the unique ones (like geodes and unicorn macarons) were a whopping $4! They are very cute, but I would never pay that much for a macaron. Hubby and I weren't planning on eating all 12 in the same day, so we gradually munched on them over the next 2 days. Unfortunately, they did not hold very well and several were VERY stale by the end. We even had them in the refrigerator to try to keep their freshness. Two days may sound like a long time, but we've had macarons from other places that held up. Despite the staleness, some of the flavors still came through. I think my favorite (as always) is coffee. I think it was the strongest flavor, and that's why it was my fave. The others were just hints of flavor that I couldn't put my finger on until the after taste. Looks like I'm the oddball, but I've had better macarons. Probably some of the best macarons I have ever tasted, the atmosphere and aesthetic of the room is enough to keep you enticed. They have an incredible coffee menu, I'm a big fan of their iced americano. Although the macarons are somewhat pricey, their quality makes up for it. I happen to like them; majority of my friends don't, mainly because of the combination of textures that you get from the crisp pastry and the smoothness of the filling. Mac Lab is a beautiful macaroon shop with a sleek white interior that is decorated seasonally; when I went in, there were traces of Christmas decorations. I didn't get a good look at the menu because my sister-in-law and I were in a bit of a hurry but they also have a small selection of ice cream. The macaroons are displayed beautifully on a sliding tray in a glass case. Undoubtedly, the macaroons are visually appealing; my sister-in-law intended to get three but the visuals persuaded her to buy more than she intended. They are a little expensive, though, coming in at about $2 and some change. We also got some unicorn macaroons, which came in at around $3ish per piece because they were a little bigger and had to be bagged separately (fun fact, Mac Lab had seasonal reindeer macaroons also but they were done for the season; Mac Lab's unicorn recently gained a ton of attention on social media because of its cuteness). The macaroons are packaged beautifully in rectangular white boxes with the cafe logo stamped on it. The boxes don't cost anything; it's the number of macaroons you buy so choose wisely if you're low on money! I had a unicorn macaroon, an elder flower macaroon, and an earl gray macaroon. We had our first macarons from Mac Lab at a friend's house. We enjoyed them there and decided we really should make a trip there ourselves to fully see their selection. I really like how this place was decorated with the white furniture, the display case, etc. It's all things cute and yet simple. The texture of the macaroons are perfect - slightly crunchy from the shell and the flavors are on-point. Nothing tastes too artificial and they're just tasty. You can't help but want to eat like a handful of them. They ARE a bit expensive though. $2.20 each but $4 for the special unicorn macaron.
