A very rich creamy sauce and the bread was drenched thus there was no textural contract making it sickly. Queenies...well queenies are queenies. Malaysian fish curry soup. Red curry with some tasty fish and a couple of shrimp. Again very heavy and creamy - no bread for contrast or a few noodles. Lastly beetroot over a creamy something piped with pesto around the side. The beetroot was overpowered by the creamy stuff. Again no bread to spread it on or anything to draw contrast - a parmesan crisp might have worked. I asked for more bread or crackers to mop up all these soupy things. Half a very small slice of "artisanal" bread was brought for which they charged me a squid fifty. Its a small cafe, very nice with a great view and some great ideas but 6 hours later my tummy is still reeling from those sauces. A lime and mint drink (soda chanh ) was delicious but beware two thirds of the glass was ice leaving a few inches for liquid. Fifty Five pounds, not bad but no need to go back.

After a relaxed Saturday evening around the North Quay which took in the Railway, Rovers and the Bath and Bottle, we decided to end the night by going for "one more" at JAR - well what could possibly go wrong? Well maybe that's being a bit too dramatic but this was quite possibly one of the worst bars I've been to in the past 5 years. I used to quite like nipping into Aperitivo (it's previous incarnation) but this was a good example of a venue that had let itself go. The very large bar was about a quarter full meaning the atmosphere was as flat as a pancake. The clientele was made up of teenage dolled up girls and creepy middle aged men looking for a big night out. After ordering our drinks we actually went and hid around the corner just so as to avoid the nightmare of being in there. The beer selection was shocking. I had a warm Peroni, no ales or bitters etc. My wife and friend each had a cocktail which was so poorly made that it was like drinking a slush puppy with all the flavour vanishing with each pull on the straw. 2 Cocktails with 2 Peroni's cost £20 which would have been better spent throwing it down the gutter. Oh yeah and if you like live music - make sure you don't forget to catch the old dude on the casio keyboard with the young girl belting out "classics" from the corner of the bar. The 45 mins we spent here before I rush dialed our taxi became something of a parody and I began to feel like we were in Phoenix Nights... Such a shame as it's a great location, great building. Could just do with having a smarter concept and not being so lazy in it's delivery. You've been warned if you make the same mistake we did by popping in for one!

The service was excellent althought the food was not... My daughter asked how the shrimp scampi was prepared..."lightly breaded" she was told with garlic. Ok... It was deep fat fried. She found it to be inedible pulling the shrimp out of the batter. Some one needs to read the definition for scampi n., pl.,. Large shrimp broiled or sautéed and served in a garlic and butter sauce and rewrite the menu.

Every meal we have had here is an utter treat. The simple, modern presentation and flavour combinations are fantastic, but at the same time feel of the restaurant is more relaxed than you would usually find with such fine dining. I started with the fois gras and chicken liver, which was like velvet, following with the beef which was melt in your mouth. The highlight was the pudding which was textures of chocolate, worth the drive alone! Places like this don't tend to be cheap, and dinner for two could set you back £100 easily (but well worth it for special occasions). You still get to enjoy the amazing dishes on offer at a much lower price with a 3 course set menu for only £24! Make sure you book though, especially for Sunday lunch, as you don't want to get all the way out there to be told they're full, which has happened to us before. Just go, you won't be disappointed, and I'm already trying to work out when I can go back.
