If you know where to look, there are numerous off-road walking trails through the trees and brush. During the Christmas season, they reopen it for a drive-through Christmas lights exhibit. Personally, I find it nostalgic and beautiful, maybe even romantic, to walk through the fall or winter evening with a friend. It offers some of the most fantastic views in Kansas City. My favorite spot is to sneak to the top of the water fountain and light up a blunt!

The northern point of the park is referred to as Clark's Point and a grand statue honoring the expedition now rests there. The park offers lots of green space, old trees, playground equipment and old rock walls and paths, but the crown jewel is the views it offers. The northerly and westerly views are unbeatable for seeing 2 rivers, 2 states, 4 counties, The Buck O'Neil Bridge, The Wheeler Downtown Airport, The West Bottoms, The River Market and plenty of land beyond. The views are even better in the colder months when the perimeter trees do not have leaves. A perfect place to introduce a newcomer to Kansas City's geography, history and natural beauty.

This park is just up the road from where we live so we've been coming here for years. It's a long…read morestretch of grass that runs along the bluff overlooking the West Bottoms and the river. So, needless to say, the views are spectacular from the various overlook points. There is parking, which is nice for a down town park, and there is plenty of room to run around. A sidewalk loops the park which is nice for joggers and strollers. There is a small, non-traditional playground at the south corner of the park meant for kids who are a bit older (elementary school age, not pre-school or younger). Although I bring my pre-toddler here often and she likes to just sit on the astroturf and watch the older kids. There used to be grills but those were taken out which is a shame. I used to come here and grill with my family. Having said all that, I am only giving this park 4 stars because of the inevitable issue with homeless people who frequently hang around and sleep at this park. It hasn't been so bad lately, but when I've been here before, we've been approached by some of these guys asking for money or cigarettes. So, if you're not too keen on that aspect of a downtown park, you might want to steer clear.

This riverfront park has lots to offer; multiple pickleball courts, picnic shelters, lots of paved walking/biking paths, kids playground equipment, large public art installations and a beautiful courtyard to watch the longest river in the nation snake it's wide muddy water past your gaze. There are not a lot of places in the metro that offer such a great up close vista of our most under-utilized and unappreciated natural wonder. The architect of that renown "City Beautiful" movement was none other than George Kessler, although the park was named for him many years after opening. The top attraction is Cliff Drive, although it is no longer accessible by vehicle. Due to trash dumping and late night crime, the beautiful drive with cliffs, waterfalls and lush greenery can only be accessed by foot or bike. The frisbee golf course looked pretty neglected on my drive thru also. The key components that are very well maintained is The Concourse; a subset park located in Kessler. The Colonnade is a century old stone pavilion and outlook with ornate and classic design features; an iconic KC landmark. Across the street is a large majestic fountain that allows fun and frolic for children and a large well maintained playground with large hillside slides. A park that all metro residents owe it to themselves to visit, although it has seen better days.

Every day the skies are different so the pictures are never the same day-to-day. I've met some very nice and interesting people who kayak, canoe and fish on this river. Not sure I would want to eat anything that is caught in this river, but good for them getting out there! For the the first year or so, they could not manage to open that gate at 7:30 every morning, which prohibited me from taking pictures and I found to be very annoying, but they must have hired a new person because that park is open every day by 7:30 now and I just love it!

This place was a little gem on our road trip. It is tucked behind an industrial building and at first I thought we were lost. But once you get there the grounds are beautiful and there is some fun history behind it as well. We walked the trails, climbed and had a great view of Downtown KC.

It is way off the beaten path and no one would ever just happen to drive by unless searching it out or looking for a place to dump a body. Even then, those looking to dump a body would probably be scared off by the 25' steel statue of Jesus. Besides the statue, there is a large lake with a concrete walking path around it and small monuments depicting the stations of the cross. The rest of the area is pretty barren and not completely landscaped. It resembles a large religious tourist project that ran out of money to finish. Today I decided to take my dog Shadow for a walk there - big mistake! My dog loves to jump in the fountain at the parks and decided that she would jump in the lake against my warnings to her; she was full of the holy spirit and insisted on a self -baptism in front of Jesus. I don't know how deep the pond is, but it took a few seconds for her to resurface and then she couldn't climb out because of the retaining wall that towers about 18" over the waterline. It was quite scary trying to lay in the mud and hoist a 60 lb dog out of the water without falling in myself, and no one to assist in an empty park. This might be a great little place to push grandma around in a wheelchair after church, but if you are taking small kids or pets, keep a close eye on them, because Jesus ain't going to help you if they fall in.
