Such a beautiful community with amazing staff! The leadership team cares about their residents and always puts them first!

UPDATE 8/22/2020. There is a new General Manager and a new "chef," read a cook with no credentials and dinners are getting worse and worse. There's no point in specifics, except to say only the cheapest cuts of meat seem to be served. The GM doesn't attend the Food Committee meeting any more, showing she has little time and/or interest in the Committee's thoughts, wishes or suggestions. She does hear complaints from residents which seem to go in one ear and out the other. So aside from some cosmetic improvements and some shuffling of staff around, it's difficult to see what she's doing besides protecting the chief cook. At this rate Mackenzie Place continues to slide down the star constellation. We are still paying a whole lot of money, and I rely on King Soopers and Trader Joe's for decent, good food. This review has been a long time coming, but I wouldn't dare post it until after I moved my dad out of MacKenzie Place due to the retaliation that I know he would have otherwise received from the staff. Five years my dad lived in the memory care unit there, and in that time, I don't have one positive thing to say about the staff or the care that my dad received (or rather, didn't receive). The staff are lazy and they lie about the tasks they completed, they take no responsibility and are quick to blame other staff members, they fail to follow the simplest of doctors orders, and they will claim false issues/additional needs on their assessments to raise rent costs. (For example, they claimed my dad was incontinent, which raised his rent by about $2,000 per month, but was never able to furnish documentation of his accidents and never utilized the incontinence products that we bought for him. His new facility has confirmed that he is perfectly in control of his bladder/bowels.) Don't let MacKenzie Place fool you, this place is just as bad as the worst of them, but with a ridiculously expensive price tag and sales pitch to trick people into believing that their loved ones will actually be taken care of. They won't. They will be neglected, nobody will care about them, and all the while, they'll tell you everything is going great! read more

My husband and I are 45 year residents of Fort Collins. We have been at MacKenzie Place since October 2015. The last three months have been disastrous. Many things reported in recent reviews here I have found as well--disrespect for residents, inappropriate hiring, decline in food consistency, accuracy, quality, and over charges for food. Worst of all, these things have been repeatedly reported to the general manager who now refuses to meet with the resident food committee, and doesn't allow the new chef to meet with the committee as well. We are repeatedly told by the GM that they want the best for us and are working very hard and the virus has made things very difficult. We understand that and have often asked for specific improvements that consider the current circumstances, most of which have been ignored. Comment cards are completed and turned in but very little changes. Zoom Town Hall meetings have been held. Only the GM speaks, no residents are allowed time. The GM addresses only questions submitted by residents a week in advance and then doesn't address every concern, I. e., overcharges for food. Bottom line: the management listens but does not hear. I have talked with the GM about my concerns on several occasions. This is not my usual management style, but I've had enough!! I hope I am "good trouble" and will soon see some major improvements. I have been overwhelmed by the support Mackenzie place and their entire staff has given my father and I as we looked for a place for him to call home. From the very first contact to set up a tour, to three months later and my father able to relax and watch a Rockies game with me, spending time in the Library reading a new book about his favorite subject, or a meal with his new friend who he met here and they have hit it off. This has been a challenging year for sure with so many things to navigate, but the past three months at Mackenzie place have been a God send. The location is well maintained, there is an amazing energy among the staff and residents, the kitchen and front of house staff work very hard to provide great meals and a very nice experience for the residents and visitors. My family has been impressed upon their visits and have been made to feel at home while they are visiting Dad. I was so worried about how this experience might go and the Mackenzie location and staff have made it better than i could have even hoped. I fully trust they have the care of their residents in mind at all times and it shows in everything they do, I highly recommend Mackenzie Place. read more

This place used to be wonderful, but now, knowing what I know about the General Manager, and Leisure Care (their management company), I wouldn't send any family member here to live--and, at one time, I considered it for my parents. No more! Why the change of heart? They treat their employees terribly. Sam, the GM, is completely unprofessional and unethical. She was actually was hired as the concierge. Yes, from concierge to GM. No experience. No education in the field. In the 8 years they've been open, they've burned through 8 GM's and 4 Regional Managers. I wouldn't want a family member living in a place with such unpredictable management turnover, would you? More recently, they let their amazing and dedicated executive chef go. He was there for over 8 years (from the day they opened!), and sacrificed almost every holiday with his family to be there for the residents. For 8 years, he was there putting turkeys in the oven at 2 AM on Thanksgiving, every Easter, every Mother's Day, every Father's Day. Instead of being with his kids and wife, he was dedicated to his job. He was dedicated to that kitchen (he always had consistently high ratings with the Larimar County health dept.). He was committed to his employees. He loved the residents. Over the years, Sam (and Corporate) asked him to do more with less. Spend less money on quality food. Less money on quality staff. In fact, he was let go because he didn't have a chance to check in with a couple of residents--you know why? He was short-staffed. Again! Sam also requested that he started coming in at night--keep in mind that he cares for his young children in the evening. It's a custodial/co-parenting agreement per the court. She didn't care. She basically told him that if he didn't do it, she would fire him. On top of letting him go with no warning or notice, she denied him unemployment benefits--after 8 years of employment! Disgusting! I hope Sam, and Corporate, know that they didn't just hurt him, they hurt his children. With no unemployment (he's still looking), he can't pay child support. He can't afford gas to pick them up. He struggles to buy food for them. So, think long and hard if you want your loved one living in a place managed by such unethical, unprofessional people. They don't care about families. They don't care about their employees. They'll work them to death, and pay as little as they can get away with. There are still many wonderful employees there, but they are micromanaged and aren't given the autonomy or the budgets to give residents the 5-star fun lifestyle they are promised. Quite honestly, I doubt they care about residents. They are in this for the money. read more

I would never put my parents in this place - especially now since they scored INADEQUATE on their latest health ratings. That's unacceptable for a place that caters to vulnerable clientele. This place looks okay from the outside, but that's as far as it goes. It is run very poorly. And, I get so upset when I hear that totally fake endorsement of the place by Susan Moore of TRI 102. She talks about how she and the staff sat around the fireplace and looked through old photo albums with her mom when she first moved in. I know for a fact that her mother is deceased and she never lived at Mackenzie place. Stay away! read more

My grandfather went to live at McKenzie place a few months ago. The facilities are very clean and inviting. You definitely pay for the facilities because you are not paying for the service. He went several times without meals because they forgot to order them for him. The nursing staff is very unprofessional. They delivered his medicine one day to another resident which caused my grandfather to go without his medication one whole day. They gave him medication that wasn't approved by a doctor nor family, they just took it upon themselves to give it to him. He had money stolen from his room and his wedding ring was stolen from staff members the day he died. He paid a very large amount of money to live there and he got treated badly. The staff was always defensive and constantly made up excuses when we asked about problems we saw. I am sad that an elderly facility like this one is so mishandled. I would not recommend to anyone to go there unless they want their family members to be mistreated. read more

We moved my husband into MacKenzie Place Memory Care a few weeks ago. We had gone through the entire admission process at another place first, and it didn't work out. After several exhausting days and a disappointing outcome, I dreaded going through the whole process again. However, the entire staff at MacKenzie Place, from the two marketing people we met with, Suzanne and Alan, to Michelle the Move-In Coordinator, Candace the Health Coordinator, Coley the Memory Care Director, and all the Memory Care staff, too many wonderful people to name, every single person was professional, understanding and caring. Every question was met with a knowledgeable answer, every issue was met with a creative solution, every concern was met with compassion for my husband and me. The Memory Care staff has been trained in each specific type of dementia, the behaviors and ways of dealing with them. That is so awesome because my husband has a less common type of dementia, Fronto Temporal Dementia, that exhibits very different behaviors than Alzheimer's, Parkinson's dementia or others. Some of his behaviors are extremely difficult to deal with. Some places I had looked at, were not really aware of FTD and had not had any residents with FTD. The MacKenzie Place Memory Care staff was not only aware of FTD, but specificially trained in how to patiently deal with him and successfully redirect him. MacKenzie Place was ready for him! We had some special security needs for which they have made modifications, putting my mind at ease. They welcomed my husband and made him feel at home right off the bat. He made friends right away, and the staff made him feel useful and helpful, which means a lot to him because he is the youngest and most cognitively functional one in the unit. They have made me feel so welcome as well, as I spend a few hours a day with him, and usually share a meal with him every day. They treat me so warmly and special. They encourage family to spend time with their loved ones, share a meal or participate in activities with them. My husband enjoys the activities provided there. They have live music a couple times a week, games to stimulate mind and body, and his favorite, the Friday afternoon excursion on the bus. The meals are very good. My husband tells everyone about how delicious the food is! The housekeeping is top notch. Every Tuesday when I come, his room is spotless, and his laundry is clean and fresh. I love going to MacKenzie to hang out with my husband! There are other amenities in the other part of the building that Memory Care residents are welcome to use if accompanied by a family member. My husband and I enjoy the hot tub, the exercise room, the pool table, have a cup of coffee in the pub, attend church service in the chapel sometimes, and he has had a pedicure at the salon! I cannot speak highly enough of MacKenzie Place, especially the Memory Care Unit! It has been a huge blessing to us to get my husband into a place where he is happy, well cared for, feels useful and respected, and where I feel like a huge burden has been lifted off my shoulders. I would recommend MacKenzie Place Memory Care for anyone who has a loved one with dementia. read more

My Father has been at Mackenzie place in Fort Collins for about 4 years. The facility is very nice, however, the service is very poor, I don't recommend this place for anyone, stay away. The old GM Sam was okay, however she really didn't have the right experience to serve in that position, I don't know about the new GM who has only been the GM for a month or two. The health and wellness coordinator, Susie Benedict, is very bad at creating a space where you feel your parent's well being is at the center of the care. Susie had no patience with me when I asked her detailed questions about my Father's care. She was very challenging, adversarial, and hostile to me during our conversations. It's difficult to argue because they could mistreat or neglect your parent in retaliation. Her position requires patience, diplomacy, and composure by the nature of the business Mackenzie place is in, I don't think the staff have this basic understanding. Other staff members were careless about how they handled situations as well. Why would I say such things? Because these are the type of personalities that you interact with at Mackenzie place, and because I want others to know what they are getting into. I don't recommend this place to anyone looking for a place for their parent, don't be fooled by the fancy facility, please take your parent elsewhere. read more
