I do enjoy a good Fish & Chips once in a while and this was a good one, with two pieces of fish, great fries, coleslaw, and tartar sauce. It was also the special at Mackenzie Pub in Ajax, every Friday - only $12.95. This was a reunion of sorts with friends from high school so having a drink with them was appropriate. A shot of Appleton Rum with Coke was my drink of choice. Service for our group was very good, not always the case at some places I've been to. No orders got mixed up, used plates and glassware were cleared efficiently. Good service, good food, very reasonable prices. What else could we wish for? read more

MacKenzie Pub serves up some pretty good pub food. Certainly the food was great and the atmosphere was good too. Outdoors on the patio, they had a live band performing, a great way to kick off the summer and celebrate the weekend. Indoors, Pearl Jam music was playing on the speakers at the bar, so I was enjoying the vibe. As a bonus, while chomping down on an order of tasty lattice fries sprinkled with sea salt, there were ample sports to watch on the wall-mounted screens - a Blue Jay's baseball game and some men's singles Wimbledon tennis. To kickoff the summer, we splurged with a SURF & TURF - a burger and seafood pasta. The TURF part consisted of a Macks Burger, homemade prime rib burger with Swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and fortycreek BBQ sauce. Upgraded the fries to a Caesar salad for four bucks and it was very worth it. The Caesar Salad dressing was the G.O.A.T. and so tasty. It almost tasted homemade, and the croutons were also delicious. The SURF part of the meal was a Seafood Curry Pasta, a delightful romp through the ocean with black tiger shrimp, scallops, red onion, green onion, roasted red peppers in a coconut curry cream sauce. Our first visit at this pub located close to downtown Ajax. It's located in a strip mall beside McD's. When we entered the place was quite empty. Most diners were on the patio. We chose for the air conditioning indoors. It took some time for a server to come by and take our order. Another server who was handling the patio came by to check on us and took our order. My wife ordered pork souvlaki dinner and I ordered the daily special which was any pasta entree for $13.95. I ordered the seafood curry pasta which came with lobster, black tiger shrimps and scallops. Two slices of Garlic bread were served with the pasta. The bread was foccacia and could have been toasted more. It was a big soggy. The fettuccine was cooked al dente and had enough of the curry coconut cream sauce. There were quite a few pieces of lobster and scallops and 3 tiger shrimps. I thoroughly enjoyed my pasta and cleaned the plate. My wife's order was entered incorrectly as the other server miscommunicated our order and gave his chicken souvlaki. We didn't say anything as it wasn't a deal breaker or anything. The chicken was not souvlaki grilled skewers. It was basically marinated chicken breast chopped into pieces to make it seem like souvlaki chunks. Not an authentic greek dish but for a pub we shouldn't have such high expectations . The rice pilaf was bland and dry with some frozen carrots bits on top. The greek salad could have had more dressing, feta and red onions. My wife didn't enjoy her as much. We did end up finishing the meal. Overall, not the greatest first impression for us. Maybe it's an off day here. It's long weekend and staff were not motivated to work. Service was barely adequate. When we got the bill we paid cash and the server stayed by the table while we were giving the tip. Not proper etiquette. We still tipped well as we know servers depend on the tips to supplement their income. We probably won't come back due to wife's order was underwhelming. read more

First time here and I was told by others it was too stale environment. Not our impression. I loved it - still quiet because it is new. My hubby and I were impressed the portions are huge, everything tasted fresh, everything was cooked to perfection. We both ordered fish and chips and a nice red bottle of wine. The fish was perfectly cooked the fries were a perfect golden colour. The tarter sauce was extremely tasty with more then mayo and relish. The fish was great! The plate was big enough if we had ordered one plate and added an extra piece of fish it would have been enough. There are tvs everywhere so if there is a sports even you would like to watch its there. I found it to be extremely clean and hospitable. We are going to try it again tonight. If they keep this up it will definitely be our new go to place! read more

Decided to go to MacKenzie Pub in Ajax instead of Macquires for a change. We have been to MacKenzie's three times and haven't been disappointed yet! We have had the nachos which were covered in hot melted cheese throughout along with all the other fresh ingredients. We are wing lovers! Tonight the honey garlic wings like no other! They were crispy, very meaty, not breaded, hot and juicy right out of the fryer. Best wings we have ever had! As a side we shared a large Caesar salad. It was very good? Could have been a little more garlicky. I don't usually watch hockey but I found myself glued to the Leafs' game on the numerous big TV screens. I could actually see the puck! My Mom, Brother and I all like to try new places and had been eyeballing this one from across the road at when eating at Sunset Grill for quite some time. One day we all decided we had to try this McKenzie Pub. So happy we did! We couldn't believe the menu once we were seated, such a vast selection of food. The manager and staff are great, there was a little problem and they fixed it right away, the manager even came to check on us to make sure everything was okay. We keep coming back to try new things now as we still haven't gotten through the whole menu. My brother loves the steak. My mom loved her roast beef with Yorkshire pudding. I love the jerk chicken, it's nice and spicy. The other thing was the prices in the menu, they are really reasonable and often cheaper than many other nearby restaurants. When you can't get in to the Portly Piper you will be tempted to go here. It's literally 'Ok'. Service is blah. Wings are ok. Beer is beer. But if your competitor is right across the street you should at least try for better than ok. So if you are faced with a 20 minute wait at Portly or thinking about trying this place out...we've done the work for you. Stay in that lineup. read more

Got nachos and the chips were stale. The rest of my food was pretty good. The manager was walking around but looked very unfriendly and we actually saw him getting mad at a server. The server uniforms are not very on par with how other servers/ bartenders dress at other pubs and restaurants and looks strange to be honest. It was my girlfriend's birthday were celebrating and wanting to do a desert but they didnt even have any so we went to DQ afterwards.. They do have a great beer selection and the pineapple Martini my gf ordered (recommend by the bartender) was very good, and there's tonnes of TV's if you're into sports. Only reason we came was because Portly Piper was too long of a wait.. was happy with service but I feel like they need to step up almost every other aspect of their restaurant before I'd come back again. read more

I'm torn... you may want to sit for this one... My wife and I have been to this place 3 times in the past month and that's because the wings are good. They have a nice smokey flavour that you don't get at most places and you get good portions. That being said.. they've been different each time we've gone. The first time they seemed more smoked.. I don't know. They were soft and juicy and seemed like they were cooked by a chef and were timed perfectly in the oven (or whatever they use). The second time they were more like other places.. they were crispy like they were just dunked in a deep fryer for X amount of minutes and put on a plate. They were still good but they seemed more generic. The third time they were somewhere in between. So based on the wings I'd suggest going to Mackenzie's. Ok now here is the hard part. The service is terrible. 2 of the 3 times the wait staff just disappeared. They didn't bring us re-fills, didn't ask us how the meal was etc. The 3rd time the staff was ok but just unenthusiastic and bland. Speaking of bland... if you are a designated driver you may want to avoid this place. All 3 times we were there the pop was flat. My wife had a water and I had a 7up and you couldn't tell which was which. Each time we went I had a different pop and they were all flat. If this place to tighten things up with the staff and fix the pop machines this place would be great. read more

I recently visited their patio for a pint but then had an amazing meal. I don't remember Mackenzies for its food but the kitchen has been taken over properly. Everything on the menu looks delicious. My friend had the burger and I had the savoury pulled pork sandwich. Highly recommended for both. This is high end pub food without high prices. I will definitely be going back to explore more on the menu. A great addition to the area!!! read more

When I walked in last night I was initially greated with a very unfriendly host who couldnt even tell me how long the wait was going to be despite seeing empty tables. I decided to sit at the bar, the bartender, Nicole, was awesome and provided 10/10 service the entire night. They have no drink menu and no desert menu (strange). Also they use Spotify for their music and dont even pay the 6$/month for a subscription; i heard a couple adds playing LOL. Food was alright. If we didnt recieve such great service from the bartender, this would have been a very bland night and more like a 1 star review. read more

Terrible service!!!!!!!!!!! We went here on a Saturday evening. It was not busy at all. There were about 3 couples on the patio and 5 people in the pub. We waited nearly 10 mins for one of the waitresses to notice we were at the door(there were 3 at the bar chatting to each other). When we finally were seated in the patio area, we were given menus and not even offered a drink of water. We waited an additional 15 mins and decided to leave. As we were leaving, we went past one of the waitresses... She looked right past us, not concerned that we left. Disgusting customer service. read more

Went here on a Sunday afternoon, food was delicious, service was great! Would go again! I had the Chicken Souvlaki , it was great and everyone at my table liked their food. Decor was classic. Was skeptical to eat here at first because of the lower reviews... service was great ( a little slow but that's okay, it's very busy)... management was very friendly as they walked around and or server is fantastic! Came to Ajax for work training and decided to try this place out. I had the beef pot roast with Yorkshire pudding and WoW this is by far the best I have ever had. Even the mashed potatoes and veggies were exceptional. Total taste of a home cooked meal your grandma would slave over the hot stove all day to make. Would recommend this to everyone.
