If you're interested in Lilac Festival or Somewhere in Time memorabilia, then this is the place for you. It's largely geared to women, with the emphasis on jewelry, clothing and home decor, with a bit of nautical-themed and Northern Michigan type souvenirs, like some of the other gift shops located in Mackinaw. Unlike most of those, Sophia's doesn't cater to the typical tourist, selling a glut of the same coffee mug, t-shirt and fudge as everybody else. It's more of a home decor/jewelry gift shop instead of a tourist destination. In other words, there were no cheap "Made in China" plastic souvenir lighthouses and run of the mill "Up North" bumper stickers in sight. Heck, it even has a row of white rocking and Adirondack chairs out front for guests to relax in, reminiscent of the Grand Hotel on the island. After a day of shopping, who doesn't want to rest their feet? It takes quite awhile to see everything in this store. I really love Lilac Festival (held each spring on Mackinac Island) and have been there for it a few times, so I was pleased to see so much gear devoted to it. I've been collecting the official Lilac Festival posters that come out each season for years now, so I picked up this year's edition here for $10. They had some previous year's Lilac Festival artwork available on clearance and I snagged one from a year that I didn't have yet for a few bucks as well. There was a huge selection of both costume and handmade jewelry, many pieces of which were priced between $40-$60 each. I thought that was reasonable. I loved the Parisian motif of the home decor, including trunks, signs, wall art, candles and more. I fell in love with a cute faux-vintage sign that was simply marked, "Love the Journey." I'm still kicking myself for not buying it when I was there. Ugh. Prices are moderate, considering this is a gift shop in a tourist town where the prices on the most mundane items are jacked up, no matter what. The customer service was great. The cheery lady behind the counter helped me locate the Lilac Festival poster I wanted and chatted me up about my travel plans, where I was from, etc. She was both friendly and helpful, but not in a fake, tourist town way. The only problem seemed to be with the store's inability to run a "chip" credit card. It had to be processed multiple times and eventually run with the pin code to complete the transaction. It was a problem we experienced at several of the smaller gift shops around Mackinaw City. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I have three "chip" cards in my wallet, so it's a problem when the store doesn't have "chip reader" capability. It was weird and kind of a drag, but it didn't deter me from shopping here. FYI If you have a "chip" credit card, beware, because it might take a few minutes to complete your transaction!

But if that is the case, then I must not like "traditional" fudge because this was one of the best I have ever had. We also had ice cream there during one of our trips, and my son said it was the best he ever had. I believe it was some sort of birthday cake flavor, or something with frosting mixed in. I took a bite and would agree that it was pretty amazing. We will be back in the area next summer, and I'm already looking forward to what I will try next.

Of course it was just in time before they closed for the winter on October 30. Store closure is a must for all businesses in Mackinaw City due to the harsh Michigan winter months and strong winds. Maybe that's how this store got its name "Windjammer?" :-) There's always soft Rock and Roll music playing inside as well. This store is #1 on my list to shop inside compared to the other downtown stores in Mackinaw City. It is well known for their largest stock of candy and their variety of assorted souvenirs and toys at reasonable prices. Hint: In October before they close, most of their summer t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, socks plus.. are marked down to half off. Upon walking in the door across from the candy counter is the Clearance area. There's an upstairs with more clothing and large designer blankets as well. The store is carpeted for comfort in walking. For children you will find books, crafts, stuffed animals, clothing, mini toys along with those cool " My Name" license plates for their bikes. There's a "fragile" area of colorful coffee or tea mugs with different photos of Michigan. A jewelry section of items near the register as well. The name also called the "Candy Corner" is true since the business is located on the corner of East Central Avenue across from the ferry boats. Their special details and quality is all their "Homemade" candies, caramel corn, fudge, flavored peanut brittle, taffy to name my favorite sweet ones! Free samples of daily fudge too. Finishing up my review with another favorite area of this store is along the far back walls with a variety of "Collectible Tin Signs." I loved the raccoon hats and some silly socks that I saw - I ended up buying 2 pairs of socks as souvenirs. I also found some delicious looking fudge, but we held out against buying it cause we wanted to get it from either the Mackinac Island or a fudge shop. But we also ended up buying 2 magnets - 1 as a souvenir for a friend and the other 1 for ourselves. But as fun as it was, I was hoping to see this shop sell more Mackinaw City or Mackinac Island themed items, like for examples I was looking for baseball caps displaying either places, but I couldn't find any.

One of the nicer fudge and candy shops in Mackinaw City…read more If one thing is for certain, it's that Mackinaw City is teeming with fudge shops. You look one direction, there's a fudge shop, whip your head around, there's another.. and another and another and so on. You get the point. Between the city and the island, I've lost count of how many there are. In fact, it seems like a few companies have sealed the deal on fudge by owning multiple shops under slightly different names all over town (and the island, plus a few downstate storefront locations) offering similar products, prices and promotions. Way to monopolize! It's a bit confusing, to be honest. Combine that with the fact that several of the traditional gift shops and restaurants have even gotten into the habit of offering fudge, and well, the choices are rather dizzying. With that said, not all fudge shops are created equal. Some have better quality fudge, taffy, truffles, ice cream, etc, while some have better salesmanship and service or a more competitive price. It all depends on what you want. We stopped into Mackinaw Fudge on vacation this summer. They had the single best fudge promotion going at the time- "buy two, get two slices free" of any flavor(s) for $16, which translates to merely $4 per slice. Nowhere else in town did we find a fudge deal as good as that one. So, what about quality? Well, I haven't really ever had anything that could be described as bad fudge from any of the shops around Mackinaw before, so the quality is pretty even among all of the competition (of which there is a lot), with a few variations. Overall, I liked the selection of fudge here, which was massive and the dark chocolate, mint chocolate and maple fudge were all rich and creamy and tasted legitimately sublime. For me, the dark chocolate varieties are where it's at. There's no telling how much of it I could eat, so reigning in my "inner fudgie" is a must. The taffy selection was pretty extensive as well and the deal on that was also great. I like homemade taffy (the good stuff, not the crappy carnival goo), so I thought theirs won out on the taffy taste challenge. It had great flavor and wasn't too stiff or sticky. Of all the taffy I sampled, theirs was one of the best when it came to consistency and flavor. Their saltwater taffy promotion was $6.99 per pound, not at all a bad price. As for service, it was hospitable and the guy that waited on us pointed out the various fudge promotions and operating hours of other fudge shops around town, showing us that he wasn't just trying to make a sale. There was no hard sale involved and he was generous with the samples. I think he doled out between 5-6 samples to us before we decided on what we really wanted. I didn't get to see anyone making fudge here (they do it in the back and not in front of customers), so that was a bummer and this particular shop stopped scooping ice cream awhile ago. I asked why and it was explained to us that they eliminated the ice cream counter to make way for more product. That, too, was a bummer, but I understood why they made the change. I was little disappointed because I remember getting fabulous ice cream here before, but I found a worthy alternative ice cream spot shortly thereafter. The fudge promotion remained the best in town, so we took advantage of it. It was the best deal of the day.

Lots of cards and behind the counter they have cute prints of wrapping paper. Some things that I got were their wood carved items, a card, and temporary tattoos. Definity check them out if you are on the island, they are possibly my favorite shop here.

The Ice Cream Shoppe is THE place to go in the summer (and you better go a lot because it's only…read moreopen May-August!) It's a little shack right by the marina in downtown Cedarville, and you can eat your delicious cone or sundae out at the tables by the water - if it's sunset, even better! The shoppe always is well-stocked with three cases of rotating flavors of ice cream (Mackinac Island Fudge is always there, though!) plus plenty of specialty sundaes, shakes and malts to choose from. One of my family members orders a Heavenly Hill sundae (with hot fudge and Reese's Pieces on top) every time - yum! One scoop is $2 and two is only $2.50. Sundaes are a little more ($3.75-$4.75) but remember you're paying for the experience and the enjoyment of summer! They also serve hot dogs and other food-shack-type but I've never tried them. You can order from inside (standing room for only about 4 people!) or outside at the window but I think the inside is faster and you can see all the ice cream flavors. In the evenings there's usually a bit of a line but the girls who usually are working there are fast and friendly. Small little parking lot fits about 5-6 cars. There's a little slide where kids can play and a gazebo with extra seating, and it's just an all-around perfect experience to go out for ice cream in the summers in Cedarville!
