Our Texas friends had taken us here for a day trip on a Memorial weekend during Covid, and they didn't even know the name of the beach we were at. Actually, arriving at the beach was an adventure in itself. After exploring the Galveston area, we waited for the rest of the group to arrive. The friend we were with decided against driving her vehicle onto the beach. It had rained a lot the previous night, and there were a bunch of pools of water along the beach. We spotted many sedans and suvs getting stuck in the wet sand. Highly recommend driving your 4 wheel drive truck. One of my wife's friends had a Toyota 4 Runner so they made a couple of trips to pick us all up, and take us to the spot on the beach where they had set up our picnic. The ride through all the water, and through all the sand to get to our destination was a fun and rough one! Cool off-road experience!! There were a bunch of folks parked in their vehicles along the water line. Everyone set up for a good time. Vendors selling kites and balloons. There was even an ice cream truck roaming the beach selling ice cream. Very cool seeing families and friends hanging out and having a good time. There are no bathrooms at the beach. Fortunately, one of our friends had brought a pop up pod. One of those useful pop up tents that you can set up to use as a toilet among other things. Do your business inside, and have complete privacy. Beach was beautiful. Water was fine. Sunset was gorgeous. Terrific day trip with amazing friends we had at this beach (whatever the name was).

Bring mosquito spray and watch for snakes on the trails. Only gripe from me is the water in the cabins was not clean so bring plenty of bottled water.

I was so impressed with the interior of the buildings, and the quality work the State put into the exhibits. No, it's not a super exciting playground for children- but my five year old had plenty of "Wow!" moments when she was exploring the barn and different things. I was floored at many of the things, and the history behind it. I'd honestly have to peg this a priority for anyone checking out historically significant things within Texas. Not only is the plantation beautiful, it has a history that will open your eyes to much deeper than just pretty foliage. You could spend a good hour or so here here, and don't necessarily have to drive in between each building/exhibit. You could walk it on a pretty day, which I'd suggest. There's picnics tables in the back if you had a packed lunch, also. Check out at the front and ask questions about where's best to start your tour, and grab a map. ALSO- if you had a chance... pick up the book "Celia, A Slave" and read it prior to coming, or even read a synopsis. With the history of Varner Hogg Plantation and the book, it will make your trip more informing when you are able to walk through and check everything out.

It was a super slow day. We caught two flounders which were too small to keep and a handful of sheepshead. Only two were big enough to keep. We wasted half the trip driving around to worthless spots and even had to stop mid trip and go back for bait because he didn't have enough. We were quoted $275 for the spring special over the phone and then charged $375. It's my husband fault for not getting the booking rate in writing. We ended up paying Josh's regular rate because the girl wasn't there to confirm. Overall we had a good time, but if we pay good money to charter a trip, at least give us a guide that knows the routes. I knew it would be a bust when 5 minutes in Josh says he only does off shore trips. If we ever try Cowboys again we will have Josh take us offshore. We liked him personally but he wasn't equipped or knowledgeable about the bay side like he was offshore.
