Super cute and indoor place for kids to learn more about sea life. We've been wanting to visit for some time but it is about 45 min away from us. We decided to visit during their Shark celebration event which was super cute for the kids but just a bit crowded. The building itself was a bit smaller than I imagined but still fun for the kids. However, outside of the event I'm not sure my toddler would spend enough time inside to warrant another drive in. Wish there were a free more interactive things to do during regular hours. read more

Perfect little stop. To escape the heat and kill time, my crew decided to hit up all the local museums in Brazoria County (lake Jackson, angleton etc). Sea Center is small but a great stop, especially for kids. Cool aquarium, you can touch crabs, anemone, and tiny minnows. It's free but be a good guy and donate. We loved our sea center aquarium visit and hatchery tour! Loved all the 1995 Texas record holding fish mounts hung all around the entrance and lobby area. Started visit off at the hands on exhibit, we were able to touch blue crabs, another velvety crab, sea anemones and such. Moved on to area with microscope, boxes to stick your hand in and guess what you're feeling before opening the lid to see, and fish tanks. Each time we'd turn the corner it felt like the fish tanks/aquariums got larger and larger with larger fish. We really enjoyed the octopus display. The facts and photos next to the aquariums were very helpful and informative. We met with our tour guide in the gift shop for the hatchery tour (called prior to schedule) and began our tour. Bill Davis was our tour guide and he was awesome. He's so knowledgeable and patient. He answered so many many questions we had, took his time and really seemed to want our learning and understanding to take hold. We got a great behind the scenes look into what all goes on at the hatchery. Loved learning and then feeding fish at the end. Great visit! Entire family really enjoyed and big bonus, it was all free! read more

I've been to Sea Center Texas a few times. I went there about 11 years ago with a group of students on a field trip and it hasn't changed much since then which in this case isn't a bad thing at all! For a free educational and environmental center, I was really impressed. It's really 4 areas in one complex. 1. Wetlands Boardwalk: It has many informative signs. We saw turtles, birds, and other wildlife there.It's a great place for family to wander around and look at wildlife. If you are patient, you'll see some of the herons or other birds feeding. There are some places for some cover to hide from the sun so you don't get burned. Make sure to spend a few minutes at the entrance to the area where there are a bunch of butterfly attracting flowers. 2. Aquariums: There are several things to see inside. There is a touch tank with crabs, anemones, and other cool stuff. There are several very large aquariums each with a theme and appropriate Texas fish. There are huge tanks devoted to the ecosystems of the salt marsh, coastal bay, jetty, open gulf, and more... There are also many taxidermied (is that a word?) fish on the walls that are all from Texas. There is a lovely plaque below "Gordon" the 320 pound grouper on the wall. I remember seeing him when I was there in 2000 and he was huge. Since then he has died and he's now hanging prominently across from the tank he used to live in. 3. Fish Hatchery Tour: The tour is offered twice a day at 10am and 2:30pm. You have to call and make reservations but it's free. The tour lasts about 45 minutes and is located in the main building. The people who run the tour are extremely knowledgeable and I found the tour very interesting! We saw some of the fish they are helping to raise from egg up to small fry. We also learned about the fish release and re-population programs in the Gulf Coast. 4. Student Fishing Area: There is a section of the facility that students can fish "catch and release". I haven't personally experienced this section but I do know it is there. No idea if there is a cost associated. Sea Center Texas is great! What a wonderful facility and educational experience! I am so pleased that they've made this place free for everyone, allowing people to experience it as often as they want. It also allows teachers to bring students here for no cost. Visit! Donate some money if you can! Side note: Our car broke down in the parking lot while we were there. EVERYONE there was so helpful. They had one of the younger guys come out and help us. He wasn't able to get the car working but he stayed with us working on the horribly corroded battery for at least 30+ minutes. Thanks to Jonathan and everyone at Sea Center! read more

This is a very small aquarium so if you're expecting something like the Houston Downtown Aquarium then this isn't for you. However I just truly enjoy aquariums. This was a very nice and informative one. I also enjoyed the outdoor wetlands walk. My toddler (2 yrs) enjoyed it as well. It wasn't crowded at all so he really got to enjoy just watching the fish swim without being bumped into. They have a touch tank, I'm too much of a scary cat to do but a lot of kids really enjoyed that. read more

Not a ton of stuff to do here, but they do host events and it's a really good way to learn about The Gulf of Mexico. Place is huge and they offer tours. I never knew they stocked our waterways with hatchlings they raise here! They also host child fishing days. It's ran by volunteers and everyone is so friendly. Kids will love all of the fish in the multiple aquariums. read more

We were vacationing nearby and spent a little bit of time in Lake Jackson. We decided to hit up the Sea Center because we knew our 1-year-old would love it. It's small, but has lots of cool things to see and touch. The outdoor area is nice and peaceful as well. We'll definitely go back next time we're in town. read more

Sea Center Texas is a multi-purpose aquatic educational center featuring an aquarium exhibit, hands on touch pool, and marine fish hatchery. Often you will see crowds of children on fieldtrips during the week. Some of the aquarium themes are; marshlands, tidal flats, bay estuaries, deep sea habitat, and jetty zone inhabitants. The big attraction is a 200+ lb grouper named Gordon. In the touch pool, you can handle animals such as hermit crabs, anenomes, starfish, and urchin snails. A 35 acre plot of land is dedicated to saltwater ponds where hatchlings are allowed to spend their first days of life. They are then used to stock the bays and marshes of the Galveston area. Well worth the trip, from just about anywhere in the Houston area. read more

I can't believe I have not reviewed the Sea Center. I have been remiss!! This is a great little educational center run by the Texas Parks and Wildlife department. It is an awesome place to visit and take a look at some of our precious (and sometimes tasty) coastal inhabitants. The various aquaria/displays show examples of the marshes, salt flats, estuaries, oil rig habitats and the deep sea. I've been several times and there are always new things to look at. My favorite is the deep sea display with the nurse sharks. They are beautiful and friendly. If you're there one weekend when they're there maintaining the tank, you'll see what I mean. Not a mean bone in their body. Unfortunately, Gordon the Grouper has passed on. He is much missed, but there are other beautiful fish to admire. Outside the main building, there is a marshland walkway that helps illustrate the amazing diversity of life that our marshes hold. Each season presents something new. Out back, you can tour the facilities where they mate and study game fish and raise the fry to help keep up our stocks of beautiful and delicious fish that the Gulf Coast treasures. Finally, there are angling classes taught here by TPWD. They're awesome. I've taken the fly fishing class and despite the fact I caught nothing while working the large redfish tank, it was a blast. I highly recommend this little gem and hope you will drop by to enjoy it some day soon. read more

I wish there was more awareness of this place! It's great for people of all ages. The workers and volunteers here are very knowledgable and helpful. It's not a very big place but it will definitely kill a few hours with kids lol. Call ahead for the tour, and ask also when they do their breeding and stuff too because you can show up during the year and the buckets they have holding the new babies will be empty. There is a great walking trail area with some facts. DONATE! I put in 5 dollars and got an awesome poster. read more

LOVED IT! It's a little small but when the admission is free, I think that it was awesome! The museum is run by a group of AWESOME volunteers, huge shoutout to them, and they are more than happy to educate you about different kinds of stuff and help you out! The museum is so clean and usually, there aren't a lot of people there so that's awesome! I would totally recommend this to families who are traveling on a budget because what is better than having cheap fun? :) PS. This is a great place for learning about marine life in the US gulf coast. Cost is free but they do take donations - that go To the great cause of restoring marine life in the gulf coast. The fish aquariums are fantastic and second to none featuring species from the gulf coast. Take the tour of the hatchery - its definitely worth it. Be sure to set up the tour in advance! Here is where they have the brooding fish for raising fingerlings to release back to the wild! Super interesting! The best learning entertainment in Brazoria County or Houston for that matter. We stopped by this place as it was on the way to Freeport and it is conveniently located 5 minutes off the freeway. The place makes for a nice side excursion and has added bonus of free admission (however they do accept donations). It seems to be staffed by friendly volunteers and is very interesting and worth a visit. They have both indoor and outdoor areas to explore so is weather friendly. Excellent place to take your kids on a rainy day and to bring out of visitors ! I highly recommend taking the tour!!

I was prepared for a "really small" place and was pleasantly surprised. We were the only visitors, so it seemed extra roomy! There are several large tanks with big fish, eels, starfish, sea urchins and my grandkids (7 & 5) loved it. For anyone who is into sharks, there are plenty of mounted fish/sharks on the walls -- especially exciting to my grandson. The staff was very friendly and the prices at the gift shop were extremely reasonable ($10 & $12 for kids t-shirts and $13 for baseball style kids caps). The outside board walk was also high interest to the kids (and adults) with an abundance of turtles the day we visited as well as small lizards to fascinate the kids. Wish we would have had a bit more time to explore the hatchery. If we are ever back in the area, we will be sure to stop by again. A great little break in our day of travel. read more
