She is a gifted massage therapist who knows just what to do to relieve soreness and stressful tension in your muscles. My daughter in law received an amazing deep tissue massage from Denise. It's been years since I reviewed Mad River Massage -- so long, I guess, that my previous review has been retired. It's about time for a new rave anyway. I had an amazing massage here on a day when ski conditions seemed as though they'd be bad. I was pretty beat up from all the kid, ski, and kid-attached-to-skis schlepping; the many, many moguls my older one made me ski with him; and habitual hunching over my computer on top of all the usual aches and pains of my advanced age. A world-class massage therapist named Trish fixed me right up. Trish had wonderful energy and used a medley of techniques, mostly Swedish, touching me in places (very professionally!!) that probably only my mother has touched, including the insides of my ears. I don't know if that would come across as intrusive to another, but it made me feel warm, nurtured, and relaxed. All of her work was so completely non-judgmental and lovely. There are some massage therapists who are very fixated on symmetry, doing the same thing on both sides of the body in somewhat rote ways. Trish was not. She found areas of tension intuitively, working on troublesome areas as she found them. I have an incredibly hard time relaxing and finding stillness. My mind is always racing, it seems, with The Never-ending List of Things That Need Doing. This massage made me still and centered and released so much stress from my body. It was $90 for an hour-long massage. That's extremely reasonable by NYC standards, especially for this kind of quality. read more

Thanks to Kevin who was super helpful and happy to accommodate us in booking our appointment. . Ben greeted us with a very warm welcome & my friend and I were escorted to our prospective massage rooms. My massage with Ben was one of the best I've had. My friend raved about her masseuse Alison...... she was very intuitive and seemed to know just where a little extra care was needed. Mad River Massage was the perfect spot for a relaxing day with 10 other ladies enjoying a Vermont bachelorette weekend! Denise (the owner) was amazing to work with, super responsive, and very helpful. Since we took over the place for almost 4 hours, she offered for us to use their front space to enjoy some @piesonthesidevt treats (a wonderful suggestion courtesy of Denise) and mimosas before and after massages. We were also surprised with a bonfire setup at the outside area by the river! It was so picturesque and relaxing; just what the doctor ordered for Day 2 of a bachelorette weekend! The staff was all very experienced, and to quote the bride, "I think that was the best foot massage I've ever had!!" - so a big shoutout/thank you to Mike for ending her massage on such a high note! My masseuse, Evelyn, was absolutely fantastic! She was thorough, consistent with the deeper pressure I requested, and really helped me to relax and let go of any stress I was carrying. I'd been meaning to come here for the longest time. Since I had a sore ache in my shoulder for a few days I thought now was the best time to finally stop in. Boy am I glad I did! They were able to make an appointment for me right when I wanted it. After discussing what I was looking for -- relief in my should and stretching out a sore ankle -- my therapist went to work with a deep tissue massage. She was careful to check with me about the pressure and positions as she went, without interrupting the intense relaxation I was enjoying throughout. I had a terrific full body massage, but it was the focus on my shoulder that I'm so happy about: it feels significantly better. Considering it was only one treatment I don't expect to be doing cartwheels, but it was truly effective in giving me some needed relief. Beyond my treatment, the facility is lovely. Surrounded by a gorgeous garden in a convenient location, the inside is homey, clean and welcoming. I look forward to coming back and would recommend it to anyone. read more

I haven't had a massage for over three years and was looking forward a little self-care. Trying to work full-time with a toddler during a pandemic has really taken it's toll and my body and mind are completely burnt out. Alison was the perfect person to help. She has such a warm energy and you can feel that in her work. The massage was amazing and so therapeutic. The right balance of effective and relaxing. The space is also lovely, in a renovated old barn - warm and cozy on a cold winter's day. I also appreciated their Covid precautions as I have a toddler and elderly in-laws at home. Best massage I've ever gotten! I love that this place is tucked away in all small town and not like a touristy, overpriced spa. You can tell from their little gift shop they are all about holistic and natural treatments. The front desk staff are so friendly. The massage I got was incredible. I believe her name was Hatuna, but she was so kind and accommodating and very receptive to feedback on pressure, areas of need, etc. She focused on trouble spots but also covered other parts like fingers, head, neck, and was so thorough. I had another excellent massage yesterday at Mad River Massage. I always try to get one when I'm in the Valley. I have had deep tissue massages with 3 different therapists there and they were all top notch. Each therapists was keen to know exactly what I wanted, always checking in on pressure and comfort. If I feel like talking, they are happy to talk. If I'm tired and don't feel like talking, they are all perceptive and respectful of my needs. The hot towels are a wonderful piece of the massage. I will get one the next time I visit and I recommend them highly. read more

We were snowed in last week and got two reservations on short notice at Mad River. Terrific massages in a tranquil (and colonial) setting by very well-trained and attentive staff. My wife and I both enjoyed getting to know our therapists, love the hot towels and aromatherapy. Very welcoming and relaxing joint. We were in town to ski for four days. Unfortunately, the weather warmed and we had rain for a day so we had to find other things to keep busy. We wanted to get some massage therapy and contacted the highest yelp rated place in the area, Mad River massage. We called and left messages but they never responded. We wound up instead going to the Sugarbush Health and Recreational Center. They did not have couples massage but their massage therapists were outstanding. read more

I get body work fairly regularly, and this place deserves a mention. I've come to believe that the true measure of capability in this field is the way in which the therapist handles your neck - it's almost always a problem location, dontcha think? Anyhoo, I went in almost blindly, completely fried and just a bit pained, got an appointment in less than 24 hours, and was quite pleased. My hubby & I had a couples massage. The women were nice enough, they encouraged us to try the aromatherapy for an additional $5. We declined, our friends had been charged $5 PER PERSON just an hour earlier - so we knew the charge was not being explained fully. We requested SWEDISH MASSAGES which they list on their website for $75. When they asked about "trouble areas" my husband mentioned his lower back was tight. When we left, we were charged more money for the "deep tissue" massage he had. We were shocked that they had charged us more after they inquired about areas of focus - but did NOT mention any additional money. Finally, our massage should have been an hour - and they were there for 50 minutes maximum. Totally disappointing and a lot of $$ wasted. My biggest concern is their deceitful way of marking up the bill. Will not return, would not recommend to anyone. read more

I came with two friends as part of a low key bachelorette weekend. We were all impressed by the staff's professionalism, the tidy and pleasant massage rooms, and the location itself -- a [literal] stone's throw from the river. My friends enjoyed their massages but mine was somewhat disappointing. I asked for a massage with a lot of pressure - something akin to a sports massage - to bang out some knots in my back. My massage was instead the most gentle massage I've ever gotten, with so much oil I thought I was going to slide off the table. That might've been fine for someone seeking a simply relaxing experience, but I'd hoped for something a bit more intense. They also charged me an additional $15 for a deep tissue service which I supposedly asked for, but there was no mention of that in the conversation I had with the massage therapist prior to the massage itself. Overall, an OK experience, but I would not return. read more

Had Trish and Sarah of Mad River Massage come to our room at the Round Barn Farm to give us a couples massage. We made the appointment several days before. We were a little demanding as we wanted to do it at 8PM on a Friday night and Trish pulled it together and got it done. They did a great job; I even nodded off for a moment. What ever oil they used was perfect for me - not too messy and only mildly scented. My girl liked her massage too. read more

I had a really nice deep tissue massage here. There is also an option to have your massage outdoors by the stream. We weren't able to do this because it was raining, it was just as good indoors! My only complaint is that you have to pay extra for oil, otherwise they use lotion. I've had many massages and never have had to do this before. read more

While visiting the area to attend a wedding, I made an appointment for a massage. I get massages quite regularly at home and fairly frequently when I travel, and I think Evelyn is one of the best massage therapists I've ever had. She's got great technique and uses hot towels, something I've neve experienced before. The environment is pretty modest, but the beds are comfortable and heated. I would highly rerecommend a massage at Mad River if you're in the area. read more
