I was pretty nervous about a new cut because I had a wedding later in the day. I spent a few months growing my hair to leave the long tenured Asian Fo hawk and was unsure what to do. I was immediately welcomed by the staff and they even offered me a beer as I was listening to Old school jazz music in a relaxed setting. I first went to see Maddix when I had a typical lesbian faux hawk. I wanted to move away from that look and was open to any of his suggestions. Over the next year we tried a few different styles and have finally graduated with THE hairdo. Now I religiously see Maddix every 2-ish months. I always look forward to sitting in his chair and listen to the barbers bantering. Can't get any more Oakland than that. I've brought several of my buddies to get their hair (head and beards) cut with Maddix and they've each been very happy with the results. Protip: The phone number listed here is Maddix's cell phone. Text him to make an appointment. As he noted, he's usually booked out a week in advance. I started off by texting Maddix. He was very helpful and courteous. He could not accommodate my very much last minute and certainly unreasonable request to get into a Saturday morning appointment (I was texting him on Friday night). However, he did refer me to Frank and assured me that the cut would be comparable. I texted Frank and setup an appointment for 11am on Saturday. I arrived for said appointment roughly 30 minutes early and enjoyed the general ambiance of the place while I perused some books that they had. Another person was already waiting for Frank when I got there. A beer was offered, but I didn't feel like drinking a PBR or Guinness so I politely declined. 30 minutes roll by and Frank is now quite late for the other gentleman's appointment. That person ends up getting a haircut from another available barber (I don't blame him). Another 20 minutes roll by and I'm still without a barber... I approached Maddix as he was seeing a customer out and he contacted Frank to see where he was. After another several minutes, Maddix saved the day and offered to give me a cut while he waits for his next appointment. I had been growing out my hair for a few weeks and wanted something different. I originally had a faux hawk, but wanted to look a bit more grown up. Maddix lined me up with a versatile style that is still going strong a couple weeks later. Escape Temescal Alley. I had grown tired of the two+hour waits; the structuring of my entire day off around a haircut. The inevitable money I would drop (or want to drop) at Standard & Strange. But, I was afraid to go just anywhere, after all, this was my hair. While The Alley did a good enough job, I never felt there was a conceptual grasp (or concern about that) as to what I was looking for. Why didn't I discover Maddix sooner? I moved to the East Bay nearly 6 years ago and have struggled to find a reliable barber until I stumbled upon Maddix earlier this year. I've tried a number of places but was usually disappointed. When I did find a place I liked, it ended up being too busy, too expensive, too uncomfortable, or too difficult to get to and make appointments. I need something more reliable and less stressful than that when I'm dying for a haircut! Maddix, on the other hand, has been a lifesaver: 1. He's always been readily available to fit me in with an appointment (w/in 24 hours most times) 2. His location is convenient with plenty of free parking. 3. His prices are totally worth it (Yes, in comparison to other barbers out there it may feel pricey but break it down. If you see a him just once a month it's about $1 a day to look like a hundred bucks. In other words, treat yo' self!) 4. He's personable and professional. Moved to east bay and needed a haircut. So I looked on yelp and found this place. My barber was Lucky. When I sat down for a haircut I showed him a picture and specifically said I like a very low taper. He didn't ask me any questions or said anything but I trusted him. There was no mirror in front of my chair so I couldn't see what he was doing. It was honestly the worst haircut I've had. From asking for a low taper I ended up getting a Kim Jong haircut that looks so horrible that I'm embarrassed to even go to work. When I addressed it he said he wasn't going to change me but I didn't care about the money. I care that I can't go out and about sporting a Kim Jong! He then said that he wasn't specialized to cut what I wanted?? That's the first time I heard that coming from a barber. He shouldn't be cutting hair that's for sure!!!
