Perfect! I have a small 24 karat pendant I needed engraved via laser, so I did my research before settling down here. Some other places quoted me about the same price but anywhere from 8 to 15 business days to get the work done (which means they were most likely outsourcing). I came here to fix 2 necklaces and the reviews were positive from yelp. I have to admit that my experience here is mixed. What they did manage to fix was nicely done and perhaps a tad more than I would expect but done well. Im giving them a lower score as they mismanaged their evaluation and ultimately could not fix both necklaces. This all happened after coming in, evaluating it, and giving me a quote. I left it in their hands and to only get a confusing call several days later about requiting it... Suffice to say, if they couldn't fix the 2nd necklace, I wouldn't have given them any to fix because now I have to go off and search for another place and waste more time. So I needed a set of pearls restrung and a metal necklace links put back together. They said over the phone they couldn't see it could be fixed until I dropped in. I did a few days later and after having them evaluate both quickly and they said both could be fixed. The restringing of pearls took about a week to be completed and looked quite nice. It was $3/inch to restring so it came up to about $50 with taxes all together. Seeing how they have some sentimental value, I wanted it to be done and I think that was well done. The necklace that couldn't be fixed... they suggested I just link up the existing broken ends without the missing links which is just silly as it would create an imbalance between the 2 sides of the necklace. And the phone call I was given was utterly confusing as they didnt say once "sorry we cannot fix the necklace but we suggest an alternative...". After many questionings of what they were trying to tell me, it became clear the person would not apologize for being unable to fix it and tell me honestly what was happening. Anyhow, it is a quaint cute shop... just be cautionary if they say "we can fix it". Don't take it at face value. read more

Dear The Internet Jil Maddin at Made You Look is the greatest thing to ever happen in the Jewelry industry AND THAT'S HOW YOU START A REVIEW LETS DO THIS!!! My fiance and I are both of Indian descent and have some gold that has been passed down through our family but not in a 'rich people' way, in a sentimental way, like necklaces and bangles, etc. My goal was to make a meaningful and creative engagement ring by melting our golds together a la Lord of the Rings. A friend of mine suggested Made You Look on Queen West in Toronto, and it was here that I met Lord Jilian "Sauron" Maddin who was destined to forge my one ring to rule them all. I've literally never had a more positive experience in ANY of my experiences in any service industry and I am NOT overstating. From the moment we met, Jil listened to every word of my ambitious project and reciprocated with positive and professional feedback. She was patient and CRAZY understanding of my budget which could only be described as "Sit down, be Humble". [Side note: When you have a low budget in a jewelry shop you'd THINK that the designers might "Pretty Woman" you and push you to the back of the line to make room for the more baller clients. BUT NO. NO NO NO. Right away, Jilian (and everyone at Made You Look) served me by the merit of my story and not of my monetary worth]. In fact Jil and I energized each other! The whole process was a fun back and forth of texts, IG tags, design refs, gem styles and obscure references for palette and sparkle! I'm pretty sure at one point I tagged her in a Lady Gaga award show outfit and she still somehow knew what I meant as a reference (side note: the ring we made is not meat). Jil's knowledge and passion for her work is completely outstanding. As she explained, the process starts with selecting stones. We both allowed this to take the time that it needed. Jil is well-versed, connected and well-liked in her community. She has access to the whole country... continent? world? 's pickings of stones. She's basically Thanos. She would say to me "D, I'm going to Vermont next week, might come back with a delicious chocolate diamond for us, stay tuned". Umm okay, easy Lil' Wayne. But it was worth it. And forget just having access to stones - we synced up in our quest for the right ones. I simply couldn't pull a trigger on a stone until I could tell that Jil was as excited to make the ring as my fiance would be to receive it. I feel like this is a good time to sidebar and tell you that it also didn't need to be as complicated as this. If you're the type that just wants to walk in and point at a ring and then buy it - Jil's selection at Made You Look is dope for that too. Okay but if you ARE a nerd for sentiment, can I tell you about "the stories"? I'm a filmmaker. So I went in with the obscure idea of telling "3 stories" on the ring. No, I'm not pretentious, YOU'RE pretentious. The idea actually came from seeing Jil's previous work at Made You Look. Her unique style allows for 3 'looks' on one ring. You heard me. It's insane and you should stop reading this right now and go to her instagram @maddinjewellery and look at all of them and then never come back to reading this because you get lost scrolling back in her profile forever. No one will judge you. I have deeply personal reasons of what I wanted as my "3 stories". My reasons will bore you. What you need to know is that Jil took my vision and expressed it in ring form. She did 3 champagne diamond baguettes on one side, a brilliant white sapphire in the middle and a chocolate diamond on the other side, book-ended by 2 small colourless diamonds. All embedded elegantly into 2 golds melted together: gold from my mother, and gold from my fiance's mother. She even sourced the best Toronto engraver and etched a design in the band. The design is an exact replica of one of my fiance's grandmother's bangles. I KNOW! Kleenex much?! A brilliant artist, my jewelry muse, Jil listened to my story and told it in her medium. So in conclusion, The Internet... Maybe you're googling or reading reviews because there's a lovely person that you want to spend the rest of your life with. And you want to show them that by giving them a piece of jewelry that they'll wear forever. F-O-R-E-V-E-R. It's literally all of the rest of the time you and this person will have together. Tip: You hafta be buzzed into this store, at least that was the case on a Saturday around 4pm. Yelp find! I decided to drop by based on the reviews and the store's response to a pre-call/email regarding an extension to turn a bracelet into an anklet. Anyway, after I was buzzed in, I browsed a bit while the ladies were talking to each other about some store procedure. It was fine, I just took in the lovely works of art. Apparently, the store represents about 100 artists by selling their jewelry. The ladies who were working weren't overly friendly, but professional and helpful. Since my silver bracelet wasn't awfully expensive, I wanted a low-tech/priced solution and Made You Look provided that for me by showing me some scrap silver chain pieces that could lengthen it into an anklet. That being said, I still think Made You Look has some amazing items. This is the kind of place where 90% of the stuff is under glass, giving you the old "if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it" feel. We had our wedding rings made here a few years ago and I have only positive things to say about our experience at Made You Look. The in-store staff was very helpful and friendly, not trying to push you on a sale, just letting you look around, but always there if you needed a question answered. When we did make our decision, the jeweler was there to meet with us and discuss what we wanted. Even though our rings were not among the most expensive they had to offer, they took care of us with a lot of care and friendliness. They do have a wide selection of different jewelry through dozens of local designers with a price to seemingly meet everyone's varying budgets. It should be noted, there are two Made You Look stores, nearly straight across Queen St from each other. One houses more jewelry and the other houses a bit more craft-based looking items. Both are great shops to just browse through, even if you're not sure what you're looking for yet. Overall, one of the better shopping experiences I've had in Toronto was at Made You Look. Fast forward to present day, specifically 6 years later, and who would've thought that my partner would end up purchasing the ring he'd use to propose to me at this store. He worked with Kathryn Rebecca and she was an amazing person to work with. From day one, all the way to present time when we changed one of the gems on my ring since we moved our wedding date up by a month, Kathryn was understanding and very kind. We weren't looking for anything super fancy, but wanting a rose-gold band proved difficult to find so we decided to go custom-made. We saw a few jewelers and happily chose Karen MacRae at Made you Look to help us create our ring. We have busy schedules so the hours and the support the shop gave to Karen really worked for us. We were very happy with the design Karen helped make for us and the suggestions she made were on point. It's not easy to make an expensive decision based on little experience so I really appreciated the help of Karen and the entire staff at Made you Look. The advice and suggestions were always genuine and felt like they were about our creation (and not their profit margin). Another jeweler in the distillery district was the exact opposite. He was defensive about his pricing from our first (and only) consultation and didn't follow-up with our request for a 2nd meeting so we moved on... for the better. read more

The concept of the store is good. They feature local jewellers who can custom create a variety of jewelry. Unfortunately they aren't selective with the jewellers they partner with. My brother came in and was referred to work with a designer for an engagement ring for his fiance, and half way through the long process (they designed the ring, paid a deposit), she was no longer with Made you Look she "moved on to other things". no where to be found. Now I see they have partnered with "Magnons" who are known in jeweller circles as dishonest and shady. We have had a terrible experience with them creating a ring. It was a diamond ring, and when I received it via proposal, we noticed the diamond was loose and the setting was noticeably crooked. When we approached "rita" she assured us they would fix it. however after weeks of calling and showing up to the studio, she was never there. We chased her as long as we could until we realized that they never had any intention of fixing my ring. We paid out of pocket to another jeweller to fix it, and when I got it appraised it turns out the diamond specs were not as originally sold. Shame that a Toronto institution like Made you Look would partner with such people who give the industry a bad rep. read more

The truth is she never had any intention of changing the display case..or calling me. As an artist I have had storeowners say to me up front that my work does not reflect their style..and I am ok with that...so why not say that upfront. To take in ones work and then to take it back is sad indeed. I will not shop there again. read more

One thing an excellent business does is to send a customer elsewhere when they know there's someone who can do a better job. Let me elaborate... I came here with a pair of vintage eyeglasses that had broken in the worst possible place, right in the middle of a hinge...something that no fewer than 4 shops had told me was impossible to fix. Yelp had directed me here, although it was a jewelry shop, I though they might be able to effect this awkward sort of repair. The helpful owner(?), Amelia, took a look at the piece. She explained that one of the staff there *might* be able to fix it, but she wasn't very confident it could be welded with the tool they had. Instead, she was very classy and referred me immediately to Opticianado, a vintage eyeglass shop in the Junction that was completely not on my radar. I was very impressed that instead of attempting to fix the glasses and get the sale, that right off the bat they sent me to another business that specializes in what needed to be done. She even looked up the hours online and gave me detailed biking directions. Very classy! By the way, it was the perfect referral and Opticianado did a great job on the repair. I had a look around the shop. I don't wear any jewelry, but they had a lot of great locally-made items at reasonable prices. I observed the staff helping a couple choose rings, and they were just friendly and helpful, not pushy at all. Just the kind of sales environment I like. Looks like they have a very solid repair program as well. If I'm in the market for jewelry in Toronto, this will be my first stop. You can even get a taco at Grand Electric afterward. ;) read more

If I could choose zero stars I would. This place took advantage of a kind person who doesn't buy a lot of jewelry and they hosed him!!! The design might be interesting at best. What's wrong with this picture, the most expensive part of the not so dazzling ring is the bottom portion of the band. You know the part that no one sees and the part that is going to show every last scratch possible. I love the person who had this ring made for me as his only desire was to make me happy. I contacted Made You Look about doing a redesign for some of the vintage inherited pieces of jewelry I have. Initially, MYL asked for some pictures to get an idea of my personal taste and then they connected me with Anat Kaplan of Anouk Jewelry. Anat, came up with 5 custom designs based on our in-person meeting. She had some of my old gold melted down for me, she had the gems removed from the old settings and she created me a stunning one of a kind ring using my own stones. I'm extremely happy and will return in the future for more custom pieces. MYL also has a lovely collection of jewelry for purchase in-store and they have some gorgeous engagement rings too. read more

I had my wedding band custom made here by Zsolt Szekely and am supremely happy with it -- silver with a ring of cocobolo (a wood from Nicaragua) running through it. I had a custom earring made here to match another one, and they did a pretty good job. It was very, very pricey, but the earring had sentimental value to me. I'm not giving them five stars because the replica earring did not quite match. It is very easy to tell the difference if you look closely (which you would have to, because they are earrings). In the end that is not a bad thing, so I'll always know which one is the original and which one is the new one, but I think for the amount of money I paid it would be a closer match. read more

MYL has done 2 jewellery repairs for me on 2 separate occasions. Both times, I initially dealt with Amelia who was professional, friendly and knowledgeable and promptly directed my inquiry to one of their jewelers with the particular skills to tackle the specific issue in question. The first repair was converting large sterling flower pendant earrings to ones with posts which required laser soldering. Job beautifully done, with posts installed at the appropriate angle to sit just right on the ears. The second repair involved repairing and restoring a wide silver band ring from Bolivia enameled with patterns inspired by traditional textiles that had been crushed in a bike accident. I was very upset that this ring had been very badly damaged and was somewhat skeptical that it could be fixed. Emily Gill was very empathetic and was very confident that she could restore the ring. She quickly and expertly undertook that repair and quite honestly the ring looked better than new as a result of her handiwork! My overall experiences were excellent from both customer service and technical expertise vantage points. Perhaps the only downside is that I did obtain 3 quotes for each repair and MYL prices tended to be on the high side. However, I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for and the confidence and peace of mind I have in dealing with MYL is worth the extra few dollars... read more

I contacted Made You Look last year when I had a small piece of rock with some garnets in it that I wanted turned into a ring, and had no idea how to go about it. Made You Look's staff and site was very helpful in selecting a designer. I worked with Nadia Werchola, who clearly explained the process and quickly got to work. She extracted the stones, developed some options for designs based on my brief, and developed the mockups - all sending me pics along the way so I didn't need to attend an extra meeting until the ring was done. I was so happy with the result that my husband and I chose to work with her this year to get new rings made for our 20th anniversary (choosing one of her existing designs). Nadia was exceptional to work with: professional, creative, thoughtful, good at answering questions, and fast! We are very happy with the result. Made You Look also has a great system for setting up appointments and payments that make everything easy, and the shop itself is beautiful (though hard to leave without buying something extra...). When I went to pick it up they tried to return it to my with it missing one of its accent stones, the band was scratched up and the setting itself was unbalanced and 2 of the prongs had dents in it.
