Considering the recent turmoil regarding the rights of workers in their state, Wisconsinites should…read morefeel comfort in knowing that modern left-leaning wordsmith warriors like Barb Ehrenreich, Jim Hightower, Eduardo Galeano, and thoughtful sportswriter Dave Zirin are in their corner. A pantheon of legends have also contributed their work to The Progressive. Jane Addams, Helen Keller, Jack London, Clarence Darrow, Upton Sinclair, Carl Sandburg, George Orwell, James Baldwin, Noam Chomsky (a legend that is thankfully still with us), Howard Zinn, and the mighty Martin Luther King Jr. have graced its pages with their thoughts on current events and ideas/pleas for a better, more compassionate society. The Progressive had the courage to oppose World War I and the invasion of Vietnam. They stood against The Palmer Raids. During The Great Depression, The Progressive rallied in favor of justice and opportunity for the unemployed just as they do today. In the 1950's, The Progressive peeled back the curtain to show us how anti-democratic, shameful, and paranoid the witch-hunt known as McCarthyism was. South American death squads, and the U.S. government's enabling of them in Central America went unnoticed in the mainstream media but failed to elude The Progressive's watchful eye. Subscribe to the physical magazine (or save some trees and go digital) and give copies to friends, family or place them strategically, subversively in public spots (subscribers also get access to their vast online archives). Or just send them funds, read the free articles on their website, and pass them on to those in your social circle. The Progressive has monitored, reported, and commented on the human condition for longer than almost any American has been alive. Help keep peace, justice, equity, and ecology alive by keeping The Progressive alive for yet another century. Hopefully, in 2109, we will have long ago conquered the demons that plague our planet today with The Progressive having acted as a catalyst.

I have mixed emotions about the isthmus weekly. It purports to give…read moreUseful information but for many of us it comes off as cryptic. First of all it's hard to read because of small letters and faint low contrast type. Secondly much of it presumes substantial prior knowledge especially about the entertainers. It's rare when I know who and entertainer is that they're advancing. The ads should say something about their style genre And anything else that would help you determine if they're worth taking the trouble to get to. If you wouldn't presume so much prior knowledge intending only to serve insiders and University youth you could include older generations And benefit The advertiser and enrich the community. Also editorial should be presented as a point counterpoint they should never be a single point of view. If you don't have a credible counterview you should withhold the commentary until you do.

I have picked up a copy of the Isthmus for years, and it is a good FREE weekly paper that tells you…read morewhat is going on in town in terms of music, movies, clubs, etc. The Isthmus though has lost it's best champion - Bill Lueders. He has decided to leave the paper, and that is a true shame. He carried the paper for all of these years, and frankly the rest of the writers while O.K., are so heavily biased it is not even funny. Biased towards the left - the FAR left. If you want equal coverage, fair coverage of Democrats AND Republicans - do not pick up this paper. The heavy bias in favor of liberals cannot be overstated. I find it odd that a couple of months after the protests at the Capitol when in response to letters about a article in the paper that I guess did not have enough liberal spin, Bill Lueders said the paper is NOT biased towards any group and covers all groups equally - he is gone. His attitude towards the protests apparently hurt him as well, as he was perceived as not being as gung-ho in favor of the protests as he could have been. It all smells to me like he was forced out. Just my opinion. However it took place, the paper has lost Bill Lueders. And that means one less reason to pick up this paper weekly, when you can get all of the info online as well for free.

    Umoja Magazine

I wanted my 200 Review to standout or serve as a benchmark as I can't even believe that I'm still…read morewriting. So, here's to the local magazine: Umoja. Their motto and mission: To bring positive news to your doorstep on African Americans. Umoja Magazine is a monthly journal of African American people & social justice news published in Madison Wisconsin and I recently went by to deliver Christmas greetings and to check in to see who's going to the Inauguration. Here's what works: 1) The owner does everything. She's wise and elderly. I say that to say, sometimes we forget the wealth of our people and of our culture is in and with the elderly. 2) Advice aside, she's running a business that spotlights what is traditionally overlooked about local folks doing great things in the Madison, WI community or have moved away and still contributing to society. 3) As a person that has ran a business, buys ad space for various charitable events and organizations - I'm always happy with the discount/consideration/and space size provided to me and other agencies when they're looking to meet their budget demands. What can be improved: 1) Online billing. 2) Sometimes the sage advice comes with harshness (once you have a rapport) that can be expected of the certain generations. Think that old guy screaming from his front porch to "get off his grass." Or even in the movies. You never talk to them until you have to and then you learn this person is the most geniune and insightful person you know. Well, I take the good with the bad and appreciate - I came for the free advice so yeah...go ahead and renew my subscription. What makes me a fan: 1) Deals when I need them for advertisements 2) The cover art. It's all locally done and in the medium of paint to canvas then it's converted as the Umoja cover monthly. 3) The articles that involve social action and social events that may have been overlooked or given a different spin by larger media outlets. Hope you find Umoja and use it well.
