I just love african food, a statement that is quite bold, Africa is big and the variation is huge. But I have had the opportunity to sample many different types of local dishes all from sadza, which is a corn meal porridge with accessories that you eat with your hands, on location in Zimbabwe to Nigerian stews to my first encounter with Ethiopian food in Stockholm (http://www.yelp.dk/biz/gojo-stockholm). So now I am happy to say I found my Ethiopian restaurant in Copenhagen. The variation that comes with the southern African sadza and the Ethiopian injera bread is what attracts me I think. Being a vegetarian I can freely choose what to eat and what not to. The same reason I'm also drawn to mezes and tapas. The restaurant in itself is quite anonymously located on Griffenfeldsgade and entering the restaurant will most likely leave you unimpressed. The lighting and interior is not that cozy. In all honesty though this according to me is genuine, many african restaurants have quite a sparse interior, I guess the food is the focus which I am all for and it won't affect my review. We ordered the vegetarian and fish dishes from the menu after consulting the friendly waitress. She then asked us if we wanted to share a plate since the plates are quite big, so we decided to do that. The beverage selection is quite limited, well, very limited to be honest, canned Tuborg is the only choice if beer is your thing. I would love to see some local Ethiopian beers or lacking that perhaps some beer that is commonplace in Africa like Lion and Castle, just to get the complete experience. Hopefully the will add this further on, but right now it brings my review down a notch. There are a lot of different flavours and eating it with your hands only adds to the experience. Prepare to get messy though. The different dishes are put on top of injera bread on a large plate, you eat by breaking of some of the pancake-similar bread and grabbing some veggies or sauces with it. Not only does it taste good, the food is plenty, you won't leave here hungry. Service was friendly and smiling. Upon leaving I told them everything was delicious and you could see the gratitude in the eyes of who I think is the owner. "What a lovely food, what a lovely service"... I think the sentence above is what described Ma'ed and the Ethiopian food they serve. It wasn't my first time here since I was invited to an elite event here before, a part of celebrating being an elite yelper and another part introducing me to a whole new food culture - African food. It didn't take long time for me, an Asian with a hardcore love for Asian food to embrace the different kind of Ethiopian food. It's absolutely easy, by the way - the spices speak for each other, we have similarity that way. Spicy food, what's not to like, right? So when I got the chance to return, I was back here yesterday for dinner. The colourful restaurant was full of Danes chatting happily over their food, scraping food with their injeras (Ethiopian pancake) on their hand. Surreal, considering this is a nation who eats open-faced sandwiches with fork and knives, or pizza and burger for that sake but here they were, talking happily with their dinner mates and eating with their hands as if it was the most natural thing to do and I was just happy looking at these cultural immersion, despite the location of the restaurant is being in colourful Nørrebronx after all, not the upscale and snobbity Hellerup. We were greeted with a smile and although the food took longer than expected (I was starving!) they were delicious. We ordered #18 with fish and #19 vegetarian and had them in one big plate with extra injeras on the side. It was absolutely lovely. The fish had the right amount of spice and the vegetarian dishes were complimenting the heat of the fish. Don't get me wrong, I'm a meat eater, or fish eater mostly for that sake, but I am happy to eat vegetarian if there's a chance to do so, especially in this place, but I was also glad that my dinner partner chose the fish because it was just simply divine. The smiling waiter came to check whether the food was ok, since it seemed there was a confusion at start of what we chose to order, but yeah, we had no complaints, the food was great and the bill was equally great since it was a little bit over 200 kr for two people (no alcohol drinks). Where else that you could get so lovely food, service for such cheap price? I am definitely going back to Ma'ed again and again...and will bring people to introduce to the lovely Ethiopian food. ...and I must tell my mom that she was wrong about the starving Ethiopian kids tale she kept repeating to me when I didn't finish my meal back then when I was a kid. Really laid-back, neighbourhood, mom-and-pop shop. We got the lamb and selection of veggie dishes. I really recommend the veggie selection. I usually tend to favour the vegetarian options in Ethiopian food as it's a nice balance to having all meat and there are usually several veggie dishes that come together and you feel like you get a lot of variety. The flavours were great, not too strong, but full of subtle spicing. The injera was perfect texture and I love how the bread soaks up the sauces from the meat and vegetables. A two dish order was more than enough for the two of us and we had quite a bit of injera left at the end. In fact, for a light dinner, three people could probably share two dishes. For 85-90 kr per dish, this is a very affordable dinner by Copenhagen standards. The space is informal, with colourful walls and bright lighting. Service is exceptionally warm and efficient. If you're not comfortable eating with your fingers, the server very kindly offers to bring utensils. But it just feels natural to eat this food with your fingers. So yesterday we wanted to try something new food wise and visited this Ethiopian restaurant. I have never tried Ethiopian food before so I didn't know what to expect! We were around 12 people so we decided to get sharing plates. Every 4 people shared a mixed plate of meat. It cost 95 dkk per person. And that was really enough! The service was good and they were very friendly and asking all the time if we like the food. The food itself was good but some of the sauces/meats were very very spicy. And I think this type of food is very heavy because of the pancakes you use to grab the sauces. I felt very full after eating not so much.. You don't get to use forks or knives, they told us it's forbidden in this restaurant so be prepared to get a little messy! I think it's a good experience and I might try it again but wouldn't say it will become my favorite type of food. But totally recommend it for anyone who wants something different than everything else in Copenhagen! The place itself is not something spectacular but it is on the acceptable side. This is such a great place! Denmark is usually expensive, but here you can easily share a plate between 2 people and eat something heavy and filling, in not so much money. A great place for vegans! This was definitely something different. I wasn't expecting such a long wait for my food considering that the restaurant was not that busy. Roughly 30 minutes. The flavor was very shocking! I like trying new things. I was in for a surprise. I didn't realize I was going to be eating with my hands (no utensils). The Ethiopian sourdough bread was unique, very sour... I had the chicken chili and my friend had the beef chili. The chicken chili was sour as well.. This whole meal was very sour. The bread was very soggy in the end and we couldn't finish all of it. BUT: service is as good as it can gets, food is delicious (albeit a bit heavy on the onion-load) and it looks really fresh, price are very very low too! What to do when you've recently returned from an adventure in Ethiopia and your stomach is screaming for only one thing: INJERA! This place is the real deal. I ordered Qey Wok (injera served with a spicy beef stew) and it - no jokes - transported me back to Arba Minch (yes, specifically). Injera is made with teff flour, fermented over four days (good for digestive enzymes!), and then created into a magical spongey, tangy crepe for all to enjoy. It is naturally gluten-free, which is a winner in my book. I came to Ma'ed a second time with a girlfriend last night for dinner and somehow got lucky enough to be included in their evening coffee and cake ceremony, where they passed out popcorn and incense permeated through the room. It was, simply put, exactly what the doctor ordered. To be revisted over and over again because it's also pret-ty kind on the wallet. read more

Very cheap excellent ethiopian place!!!! An amazing little restaurant in Norrebro. The interior is nothing special, but you don't come here for the decoration but really for the food. And the food is amazing. It is the typical Ethiopian food you will find here. For people who don't know it, you eat with your hands and some dishes can be spicy. Try the royal dish (it is a lot !!!). Better go with an empty stomach. AND: it is really cheap (especially for Copenhagen standards but also in general). Great thing about this place: they have a loyalty card :D Little thing what is weird: they have a few Italian dishes on the menu (I suppose it's for people who are not adventurous enough). Well, that was an excellent experience. It was my husband and my first Ethiopian meal. We were glad that we ate it together with two experienced Ethiopian diners. We decided to share all our orders in a one giant tray. Mine was the chef special menu, and my husband ordered the number 13 on the menu (couldn't remember the name). We both loved all of it. We like the spicy beef dish, the spinach beef dish and the veggie dishes. The way you eat it is by taking a roll of injera (a sourdough flatbread), tearing off a small piece and use it to scoop out a dish. Might take some time to get used to it. Overall it was an enjoyable experience, and we definitely want to go there again. Price wise was around 100dkk per person. Just remember to book a table in advance since the place is very popular especially during the weekend. A quick side note, if you are a coffee drinker, then you can buy coffee there. They do have a coffee ceremony menu consisting of coffee with popcorn (supposedly is parts of Ethiopian culture). read more

Delicious Ethiopian food in laid-back surroundings. Sit in the front and it's a little more intimate (smaller tables, mood lighting, street view). Sit in the back and you'll find yourself eating more family-style at a long table with a few other groups (and maybe sharing water pitchers and injera) but there are always a lot of people smiling and talking and it's all in the collective spirit of an inexpensive, good meal. The woman taking our orders was brisk and efficient, the food came relatively quickly, and more injera was brought if we needed it. And then there is nothing better than splitting a large platter of food with those around you, getting to try so many wonderful flavors that mix together, and enjoying a cold beer on the side. A good option if you have dietary restrictions - injera is made with teff, so it's gluten-free, and if you get the vegetarian or vegan options, you will not be missing out. Situated in the very heart of this multi cultural area, Ma'ed provides the real Ethiopian deal. The decor is nothing much, but the service and atmosphere is friendly and homely (in the nice sense of the word). For those not familiar with Ethiopian cuisine: The table is presented with a large plate of courses you ordered, and you eat from it using a pancake-resembling bread called injera to scoop up the very delicious meat and vegetables, all seasoned to perfection and not too spicy. Ethiopian is finger food in the old fashioned way, and to me that is a lot of the charm and appeal but if you dont like to share your food with the rest of the group and eating with your hands - dont bother. The food was really good and there was plenty of it. Lots of little dishes all stew types foods which had had plenty of time to simmer in the back, giving them a very full and rich taste - these guys know how to get some omami in there. the place is very Nørrebro - nothing fancy (at all) and brightly colored, and it was not how I would decorate - well more or less anything. But being on the street sometimes called Little Somalia its spot on. The service was friendly, but slow. there was a lot of people and that might have been the reason, but still one more staff wouldnt have hurt... But overall really happy to have found this place. It comes with a variety of dishes, several with lentils, others with spinach, potatoes, and beets over injera, the spongy Ethiopian flatbread. The portion size is quite generous, and they even have a stamp card, so you get your 10th meal for free. As other reviewers have noted, the decor is slightly eclectic, but not everything has to be clean lines and minimalist aesthetic, right? I really like it! Though the interior looks a bit grungy, the price they charge for the ample amount of food and great service more than makes up for it. Four of us came here (mainly newbies to Ethiopian cuisine) on a Friday, luckily with a reservation. The place was almost completely full and it's the middle of the month. But I guess the length of time until your next paycheck doesn't matter because most of the dishes are 100 dkk or less. I got the vegan/vegetarian plate (95 dkk) which consists of spinach, chickpeas, lentils, carrot, onion, cabbage, and potato combined into four different stews and served with sour cream and a little salad. My friends all ordered different dishes and we decided to have them all on the same plate, as suggested by our server. You don't get any utensils so wash your hands and dig in! I am a huge fan of all things sour so of course I loved the injera and I really enjoyed eating stews with my hands. Everything was seasoned well and some dishes were even up to my spicy standards. When we asked for more injera, our server was very nice. She brought it over right away and didn't make us feel bad about being pigs. :P Even though it isn't a heaping pile of food on your plate, it is very nourishing. Though you can order beer here, I don't recommend it since the food is so filling. Because my family lives in an area lacking ethnic restaurants when we travel to cities we search for food different than what we have at home. Ethiopian food is one of our favorites, especially for my 13 year old son. Our meal at Ma'Ed last night was satisfying and delicious. We kept it simple and ordered the chefs sample which allowed us to try a little of everything. The spinach was my favorite, and the lamb was the star of the meal but everything g was tasty and well prepared. The platter came with a good mix of meat and vegetable options so even my vegetarian daughter could enjoy. We weren't able to finish everything on the platter but we tried. I really wanted to like this place I was so excited to have gluten-free Ethiopian food but it was dreadful. There are three or four restaurants that I frequent in the San Francisco Bay area and they are all good to excellent so I know this food. I ordered my usual vegetarian combo here. The greens were watery, the courgettes were cooked to death, flavorless and watery, The yellow dal was flavorless, the red dal tasted of berebere and nothing else, the gluten-free Injera was dry, sour In a bad way (I normally love injera) and needed salt.
