Magazzino is a museum in Cold Spring, NY that displays Postwar & Contemporary Italian Art. We visited this space on a Saturday "day trip". When we first arrived at Magazzino, staff let us view the Antonio Marras and Maria Lai: Llencols De Aigua Installation- this will be there until January 2026. All of us visitors were then told that some areas are not open to the public at this time. This promopted the woman at the front desk in this specific building to state that museum general admission is 1/2 price per person ($10 instead of $20) and that she could only take one form of payment. Because we wanted to pay cash, we were told that we can pay admission in the next nearby building w/ separate staff. It was nice weather that day, & we enjoyed walking on the property to the next building. Although a portion of the space was closed to patrons, we got to see some artwork w/ in Robert Olnick Pavilion, which was created in 2023. This included the Arte Povera which is their Permanent Collection. The architectural design of Magazzino Italian Art is modern & beautiful in its simplicity. Magazzino has lots of campus-style open space w/ beautifully massive windows & gorgeous greenery. A water feature & open walkway between one gallery to another completes the nice minimalist aesthetic. We sat for a bit and enjoyed the fresh air and views. We had to get a picture of the words "Reject Racism" etched onto the entrance door before our departure. I love this museum. It is worth visiting for the architecture alone. The beautiful light filled spaces are the perfect backdrop to any artwork that they choose to exhibit. Also right up the hill from the museum, you can visit a collection of donkeys. Don't miss this Hudson Valley gem. read more

I'll preface my review by stating that I appreciate art that challenges norms and pushes boundaries. Engaging with dark, confrontational, or ambiguous art doesn't bother me--provided it has aesthetic or cultural merit. That's why my recent visit to Magazzino Gallery, was a letdown. The Arte Povera pieces they focus on felt more notable for what they lacked rather than what they conveyed. Many pieces felt phoned-in and lacked genuine skill or thought, as did the museum experience. The galleries don't provide descriptions on the walls, so you're left flipping through a book of low-res images and tiny print for any context. Even the staff appeared disengaged. I'll spare you a lengthy analysis but to me, Arte Povera's attempt at being anti-elitist ends up reinforcing a different form of elitism. The entire exhibit reads like a psyop to lower public expectations of beauty, meaning, and depth--to make the working class more accepting of the status quo. And as a working person, it's galling to receive an anti-consumeristic message from wealthy artists and patrons who likely do little to curb their own indulgence in The Good Life™. That said, there were some highlights. The Murano glass exhibit was fantastic, though it was a bit small--more of that would be great. The café is a gem, and the sbagliato on the patio was a refreshing break from the dismal art. The property itself is lovely, with beautiful gardens and well-cared-for Sardinian donkeys adding an almost bucolic touch that helps offset the Brutalist architecture. While the art didn't hit the mark for me, these elements made the visit worthwhile. read more

A beautiful museum complex near Cold Spring, NY that house and exhibits works that represent the Arte povera movement in contemporary Italy. There is an excellent cafe on site, and a not to be missed herd of Sardinian donkeys. The staff are all helpful, pleasant, and knowledgeable. read more

It is a nice well maintained minimalist art museum. All of the art in the museum are by Italian artists. The art itself somehow similar to Dia Beacon where it doesn't make sense until you read the explanation. To maintain the minimalist aesthetics there are no descriptions next to the art and you have to download their mobile guide. They have several galleries and if you walk around the premises you will find some cute donkeys. It is a bit random though seeing them. They have clean restroom inside the museum and outside near parking lot. We like the outside restroom where it is quiet, cool and you can sit before deciding where to go next. It is pay as you wish and fully air conditioned, a good choice to spend time and learn during one hot summer day. read more

A delightful place to spend an afternoon and seem like you're super in the know, Magazzino is a tucked-away museum of modern Italian treasures tucked away on a nondescript road in the Hudson Valley. Though I probably wouldn't come up to Magazzino from NYC for a day trip on its own, it's great as part of a day's itinerary in the Hudson Valley, perhaps combined with a stop at Storm King or Dia:Beacon (you'll do a lot of driving). Currently, admission is free, and donations at the ticket desk will go to a charity; I made timed reservations ahead of time on their website and checking in was a breeze. Also, the bathrooms are extremely chic and roomy, and much of the museum seems to be wheelchair-accessible besides a few outdoor gravel areas. It was easy to find parking in their lot, and on a chillier fall day there were still plenty of people wandering the galleries. If you're into Italian modern/post-modern art, this is your jam. If not, you'll probably be kind of bored, and in that case, I'd recommend strolling the grounds outside and making your way up the path that goes up a hill to visit THE DONKEYS! There's a pack of sweet donkeys that live in a barn on the museum grounds, and they seem to enjoy a truly idyllic little commune (there's also another interesting art piece in their pen). They are extremely soft, and though the sign warns of possibly vicious behavior, I did not witness any of them attempt to kick anything! read more

Great place to visit for some cool art exhibits. No admission fee, but donations go towards childrens hospitals in need. Going from left to right clockwise, you will see some really cool art and some weird ones, but theres something for everyone no matter what kind of tastes or style you like. The gallery is very clean and modern, yet sophisticated and chic. The place is well designed, even the bathroom looks so neat and modern (had to take a pic). There is parking if you are driving, but there is also a free shuttle bus from the train station. read more

A gem of a museum in the Hudson valley. The exhibits capture a turbulent time in modern Italian history and there's a nice range of mediums from sculptures and neon installations to paintings and photographs. The surrounding nature frames the space so well and the glimpses of the trees and skies as you make your way through the museum are incredible. They have a special system for Covid times - you come at a pre-reserved time, get a temperature check, and a proximity sensor you wear which will beep if you come to close to someone else not in your party. Admission is free but donations are welcomed. There are bathrooms inside, but at the start, so you can't return to them after you pass. However, there are also bathrooms outside available for access. read more

Magazzino is one of the truest gems of the Hudson Valley. I didn't know what I was walking into, and ended up spending the day learning from the marvelous, knowledgeable staff. Each gallery contained such interesting works that I feel so privileged to have seen. Not only are the pieces an honor to behold, but the architecture of Magazzino is astonishing. My visit was made complete by a lovely walk along the grounds and a visit to the Sardinian donkeys on site! I plan to visit regularly. Thank you, Magazzino Italian Art! read more
