Wow! The Gilded is alive and well at Lyndhurst! Just WOW! The grounds and home are somply stunning. I spent a few hours on the grounds and had a fantastic tour with Charlie. He was most knowledgable about the home having been a docent for 24years. The faux painting is exquisite and makes wood look like marble. 6/3/25: We went to visit Lyndhurst. Lyndhurst is located in the Hudson Valley at 635 South Broadway in Tarrytown, NY. You drive up to a gate house. It's $10 per person to enter. You'll be credited $10 on each tour ticket. There's lots of parking. We walked over to the Welcome Center. We purchased tickets for the the Classic Mansion Tour at 1:00 PM. Prices are as follows: Youth (Ages 6-17) $19.00 + $1.25 Service Fee $20.25 Senior/Military/Student/AAA $24.00 + $1.25 Service Fee $25.25 Adult Admission $26.00 + $1.25 Service Fee It was about 12:30 PM. So that gave us time to enter their special furnishings exhibit designed by AJ Davis. Nancy was our wonderful tour guide. She was super friendly and very informative. Lyndhurst was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis in 1838. It was originally known as 'Paulding Manor". Mr. Davis also designed the furniture. Talk about talent!!!! The estate was owned by The (William)Pauldings, The (George) Merritts, and last by The (Jay) Goulds. The mansion is actually made out of Pinewood covered with a limestone. Inside the estate, there is a lot of faux painting on the walls and ceilings. After our tour, we walked up a hill to a lovely Rose garden. The roses came in so many beautiful colors. The yellow roses were the most fragrant. The estate does have a bowling alley. However, that's on a longer tour. Lyndhurst does have a very nice gift shop inside the Welcome Center. My husband is a big fan of history and while visiting family in the area, we happened upon this wonderful tour. We purchased our tickets on line and appreciated the small size of our group. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and we actually learned a lot. We were there the first weekend they had decorated for the holidays and we're told there were 50 trees set up around the house. It was very beautiful and I'd love to go back and see the house without them. I strongly recommend this tour. The Lyndhurst Mansion and grounds were a wonderful experience. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and visit a beautiful estate that houses a great historical palace, give Lyndhurst a tour. When you pull up, you'll be greeted by a concierge who'll charge $10 per car for just one ground visit. If you want to take the tour of the castle, it's an additional $15 per person (for a total of $25 per person.) This was well worth it for me since I wanted to see the castle and learn about the families' history. Our guide was amazing - so knowledgeable and engaging - and the tour is about one hour long - it covers two floors and treats visitors to a rare glimpse of the lavish decorative arts and architecture. There's also a quaint and lovely gift shop inside the main building where you also purchase your ticket and wait for the tour to start. The estate is massive and right on the water, you can walk around in peace and enjoy the beautifully landscaped area - it's well the $10 even if you just want to spend the day and do rounds of walks around the estate. Also, if you become a member of the establishment, you can walk the grounds for free (not sure how much the membership is though.) The castle was absolutely gorgeous - Gothic architecture is fascinating to me. The history is also very interesting and you realize just how rich these families were for those times! In addition, they have many events as well as wedding and other seasonal activities that take place. And I do believe that you can picnic on the ground (which is really nice!) If you have a couple of hours to explore, Lyndhurst is a great place to see art, nature, and history. The mansion is beautifully preserved and retains original furnishings, paintings, books, and more to get a sense of stepping back in time. We took an hour tour and really enjoyed it. The grounds are beautiful as well. You can walk around at your leisure or link up with the attached Hudson Riverwalk. In addition to the main tour and the expansive grounds, they also do temporary, rotating exhibits in a small building near the welcome center and parking lot. Great tour with Nathan that we snagged last minute after driving up on a random Sunday. It seems like they opened additional slots which were not offered online (where everything was sold out the night before). There is no shortage of Christmas trees, they did not hold back, as there's even a tree in the bath. We saw two floors of the house on the tour and wandered a bit of the grounds before the cold got to us. Gift shop and bathrooms at the welcome center. Went on a tour of this mansion today and boy was I impressed! Our tour guide, Sara, was very knowledgeable and a pleasure. She was so eager to share everything she knew about the history of the mansion. We did the Upstairs/Downstairs tour, which came out to $87.50 for 2 tickets. We were able to purchase the tickets the night before because they had a few remaining. We got there a few minutes early, which allowed us enough time to park and use the restroom before the tour. There is plenty of parking. They did not charge us upon entering as we told them we were there for a tour. I didn't know what to expect because the tour description states you'll be climbing stairs, so I opted for sneakers. But you can definitely wear sandals. The tour is entirely inside the mansion and the stairs inside are definitely safe enough to wear sandals. After the tour, you can go into the small gift shop, or the ground itself is just a beautiful and scenic place to walk around. You are allowed to bring cameras, and can have a drink with you as well. I would recommend this if you are a history buff or if you just want to explore something new. The tour was about an hour long. read more

I visited the mansion in Summer 2025 for a tour. I had a great time and took lots of photos. I returned in October 2025 for the Fall Halloween Mansion tour and it was very disappointing. We paid $40 per ticket for this tour. Once we arrived at the mansion we were told by the guide that we were not allowed to take any photos. AT ALL. This was very disappointing! The decor was beautiful and I was very sad I couldn't take any photos. In each room there was a tour guide telling a story about the mansion related to Halloween. There was a second guide in the room to watch to make sure no one took any photos. Why did I pay $40 to take an hour long tour of the mansion and couldn't take any photos? What was even sadder was that each story talked about photography during that time period AND WE COULDN'T TAKE ANY PHOTOS!! No where on the website does it say we can't take any photos during the tour. The only photos we could take were at the gift shop and outside the mansion. read more

I can't believe it took such a long time for me to write a review for the Lyndhurst Estate. Please come here for the fall foliage. Not only will you see beautiful yellow and reddish leaves, but you'll also see cute Halloween decorations! They close for the winter season, but re-open back in April. I highly recommend to explore the Lyndhurst's grounds. The ground pass allows access to everything but the mansion. The estate contains beautiful landscape, gardens, statues, fountains, views of the Hudson River, and more. If you wish to tour the mansion, it's an additional $14 (I think). Overall, 5 stars. We came just for the inside tour as something different to do. It was the equivalent of a high school field trip LOL. Another review mentioned that it was goofy, and it definitely was. The people that work there did a great job of being in character even though i couldnt keep it together laughing. The stuff inside the mansion was really cool to look at though. The books in the book shelves, the kitchen cupboards (which was a special part of the halloween tour), and the art room were like taking a step back in time. There's a guide in every room who is happy to provide information on the family and the artifacts. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. I really enjoyed learning from them. Beautiful Gothic Revival mansion, well worth the visit, have been several times. My only gripe concerns the Paulding parlor. It was redecorated in the 19th century in the French style and boasted a huge marble sculpture of Cupid and Psyche. In the past few years this parlor was made to look as it did when it was originally furnished in the Gothic Revival style but the carpet and furnishings are reproductions. Beautiful, but a betrayal to the fact that Lyndhurst evolved organically, with different styles coming, going, or blending. The beautiful and huge sculpture of Cupid and Psyche - which once dominated the room and gave it so much character - has been banished to a "sculpture gallery". Have attached a photo showing the parlor as it was. The style is a bit over the top for my taste but it's such a shame that the sculpture is gone. read more

One of the extravagant mansions built by the ultra rich just before and during the guided age. The mansion itself is towering and boasts gorgeous architecture. It also has the Hudson as its backdrop, offering gorgeous vistas. There is a classic mansion tour (main mansion), the backstairs tour (the tower, servants quarters), the upstairs/downstairs tour (combines both), as well as a landscaping tour (the only tour to visit the inside of the bowling alley). We did the combination tour with Kelly and she did a great job. Please know that while you do get to see some of the servants quarters, several of them are off view and being used as storage. You can also buy a grounds pass for the day, where you can see the ruins of the greenhouse, all of the plants, and fountains. There are trails that lead to the river and to some small waterfalls. There are several benches to sit on in order to rest and take it all in. They have a welcome center with a gift shop, which does sell water. Everyone on staff is very nice and helpful. For the combined tickets, the price is 40 each. Prices vary based on tour type. The combined tour is 90 minutes. And if you have mobility issues, please know the property is very hilly and the mansion has many steep staircases, particularly the upstairs/downstairs tour. They have multiple events here as well. The AKC dog show was setting up while we were there. Some TV shows film there as well. So make sure you check the calendar before going, as this affects access. I also recommend purchasing tickets ahead of time online, as they often sell out. read more

if I could leave less than one star I would we came from Florida bought tickets well in advance for a tour. There was three adults, a toddler, a four year-old and a baby they carried in a . The website states that children had to pay we get there and they wanted to charge us for all three children, including a baby being carried on a papoose with his mom. We were trying to tell her what it said on the website and the senior woman at at the counter, pointed to the sign and sign right here tells you you have to pay. How are we supposed to see that from Florida buying tickets in advance online . Then the man wearing glasses and dark grey hair with glasses asked if he had to take us even if we paid he didn't want to it was obvious so then she tells us even if we paid now the tour would be too many people and could we book another time we planned our whole day around this when you come from another state we try to plan everything out. A lovely Gothic Revival mansion! I don't know what room was my favorite. The dining room? The art gallery with that beautiful stained glass window featuring the angel of the arts? We learned about the history of the past 3 owners and also interesting facts like how the The Gilded Age filmed on this location. The grounds are vast and fun to explore with the family. Came with a friend on the one weekend a year they allow you to tour the mansion on your own. My wife and I took the Christmas tour of the mansion with a friend of ours. We booked our tickets weeks in advance and we were glad we did. It was sold out fast. The mansion overlooks the beautiful Hudson River. The mansion was beautifully decorated for Christmas and was truly a spectacle. Our guide was knowledgeable and pleasant. He really knew the history of the property inside and out. He even told us about recent TV shows that had taped scenes inside the mansion as well as on the property. The history, beauty, and pieces of memorabilia inside the mansion are breathtaking. Great tidbits about the walls painted to make it look like marble but really are wood. The walking tour lasted one hour. Even so it was winter, the grounds looked magnificent. There was a welcoming center and a gift shop. The signage and directions once you are on the property are excellent and they get you to where you need to be. The price of the tour was well worth it. There are always events at the mansion during the nice weather so I have no doubt we will be back. It was worth the hour drive. read more

This is a breath-taking mansion in a neo-gothic style that you don't really see much of outside of churches. There was a nice history about the owners of the house, particularly Jay Gould who they portrayed as very caring of his family, his staff, and anonymously donating large sums to charity and still portrayed at the time as as a villainous figure. My favorite part was the gallery section where he was an art collector. It was floor to ceiling paintings, some of which have been loaned to the Met. The room had great lighting and faced Mrs. Gould's room, so I can imagine the glorious morning sunrise from that angle. The rest of the house had a lot of great items because Jay's daughter donated the house, so it retained their furnishings. The property faces the river and it's nice to stroll along the grounds. There is also a fairly large garden and a bowling alley building which you can look into (but not enter). It is a little on the pricey side, and at the time I went, there was a Tiffany exhibit near the visitor center that cost even more and was extremely small. It was kind of cool but it seems really unnecessary to charge an extra fee for a one room exhibit when it's already $18 a person to go on a house tour so $10 is a lot extra for what it is. Would not recommend that part. Otherwise especially in nice weather the tour plus strolling around the property makes for an enjoyable afternoon. read more

I really don't like venturing into politics when it comes to reviews, or, frankly, when it comes to anything in this day and age. But a promising event this past Saturday at Lyndhurst was unfortunately tainted, spoiling a gorgeous landscape and mansion. It's truly a shame but needs to be highlighted, if only so the powers that be can strongly reconsider their stance here going forward. I came to Lyndhurst with a group of chums for a roughly 30-45 minute tour probably an hour or so before sunset. This place is very impressive to look at; the estate overall is blessed with rolling lawns and gardens literally right on the Hudson River. At this time of day (especially when it's sunny/pleasant out), it's something to behold and unquestionably one of the top selling points. It's also very accessible/easy to get to, with plenty of signage leading up to the gates, and several employees strategically located throughout the grounds to help guide you to the ideal parking areas. Also a positive - the five or six presenters during the tour were clearly well prepared and professional. It seemed very formal and pre-rehearsed, without any opportunity to improvise. It was a bit too stagey for me, but I'm sure it's a format that others can get behind. Not a single member of the tour asked a question, and I suspect it's because the presenters didn't give the impression they could provide more information beyond their scripts. Also, the rooms have been beautifully preserved - a tribute to some solid caretakers who appreciate historic architecture. When it comes to COVID mask policies, I'm pretty middle of the road. I'd prefer not to wear them at this point given a choice, but if a business requires them and I'm utilizing whatever services they're offering, I'll defer to them. It's their policy - if I don't like it, I don't have to frequent their establishment. When we arrived at the Welcome Center, there was a prominent sign by the door indicating masks were required. It had been a while since any of us had needed to use one and understandably, no one actually had a mask on hand with them. They had a box by the door full of disposable masks, which we all put on. While the tour initially meets up/starts at the Welcome Center, it really takes place in the nearby mansion. As such, we were led by an employee outside to cross over the lawn to the entrance of that building. Presumably since we were outside in the open air, the employee leading us over wasn't wearing a mask, and most of us just chin-strapped our masks for the walk over. When we got to the entrance, we were greeted by our first presenter who led us inside and was not wearing a mask. And just to be clear, every single presenter and employee that we encountered inside the mansion was not wearing a mask. Since the first presenter wasn't wearing a mask indoors, I took my mask off, as did one of my chums. Within a few minutes, the chum was told by another maskless employee to put his mask back on per their policy. This is where my issue lies. If you have a COVID mask policy in place right now, the only rational explanation for it is that you have concerns about spreading a contagious virus amongst your customers and staff. But if all of your employees within an building with poor, if any, air circulation are speaking to a group of people without masks on, you're absolutely negating any benefit from the customers wearing them. You're just doing it to do it. To add injury to insult, a member of our group almost ended up passing out toward the end of the tour and had to go outside for the remaining few minutes to get some fresh air. Was it a direct effect from having to wear a mask? I can't say for sure obviously but it's an awful optic for Lyndhurst to contend with, and one that could easily be avoided. Bottom line - if you're going to have a mask policy, everyone - customers AND staff - need to be wearing them. Period. If you're not going to enforce that rule across the board, don't have a mask policy. It's meaningless and amounts to empty virtue signaling. If you're in the mood for a Halloween-themed tour, go a little further north to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. It's outside where you can breathe in fresh air to your heart's content. read more

A trail is directly behind along the river and that in combination with the animals that live in the grounds make for a great day outdoors. If you've seen the original Dark Shadows TV show, you've seen Lyndhurst castle. The castle is beautiful and worth it. I think it was around $22 per person. Entrance to the grounds is $5, unless you bought a ticket online, then it's free. The estate has the castle, a garden, the skeleton of a greenhouse and beautiful grounds. During the last 2 weeks of october they decorate the inside and outside. They have a cool visitor center with gift shop that you should at least check out. I did the walk around tour which I enjoyed. With the walk around tour you can still ask people working there questions and move at your own pace. It still took us about 45 minutes to walk through the place and ask questions to the guides/assistants there. This is a must visit as part of your Sleepy Hollow itinerary. Be sure to check out the beautiful views of the water as well! read more

I've been visiting this property for the better part of a decade...it's stunning beyond words. Over the last 3 years it has become my daily "running route" as it sits along the old croton aqueduct! My youth cross country team also trains here (incredible hill). It's heaven on earth. I've done it all over the years (Halloween, Xmas, Jazz, scarecrow, weddings etc) and I'm telling you...do a tour ONCE and come back to explore the property on your own. There's so much to see that doesn't cost a dime. Enter the property from the old croton aqueduct trail ANYTIME and you'll never pay a cent. You can roam everywhere but not inside any of the houses. After 6pm you can drive in without a charge. It may have the best sunset on this side of the Hudson. Pure magic. read more
