We used Design Inside for our recent condo renovation, and we were pleased with our designer,…read moreAbigail. We had looked into three or four design firms and went with Design Inside because we got along well with Abigail from the initial consultation. She's friendly and had suggestions from our first meetings. Our remodeling scope was pretty basic (resurface hardwood floors, install new tiling, new lighting, new kitchen countertops/backsplash/hardware, painting, etc.) We weren't planning on taking down any walls or putting up new walls - hence "pretty basic" in our eyes! The initial few weeks involved back and forth with designs and occasional meetings with Abigail so she could get a handle on what we wanted done. Abigail was accommodating with meeting/phone times, and would often meet with us late afternoons or early evening. She created designs we had never thought of doing (enclosing in structural poles, wainscoting, etc). Abigail also was able to easily "read" my husband and I in terms of color schemes and we ended up choosing one of the first few samples of tiling and backsplash that she dropped off with us. Kudos for that! Abigail also provided us bimonthly hours summary / detail so we knew how much we were being charged for her services. She would break down the time she spent working for us by the minute and it was helpful to see where our dollars were being spent. From a "grand overall design", Abigail did a good job, but when we started getting into the details in the later phases, we did run into a few minor issues. I recommend ordering all materials / furniture / art yourself and not going thru Design Inside. With a little work on the intranet, you can find it cheaper, not to mention a lower delivery charge. We had a few material mix-ups with Design Inside - i.e. we received the wrong hardware; not enough tile or grout was ordered. Abigail's measurements for the den were incorrect so she didn't order enough tile / grout - her measurements for the wallpaper were also off, but this time we almost ordered too much. The invoice system used by Design Inside is a little confusing and you should pay very close attention and track your own expenses. It's hard to describe but trying to track all the bills and refunds with the invoices provided was difficult. Overall - I would recommend Design Inside and Abigail for your remodeling needs. I would just offer a bit of advice to double check measurements and order your own materials, but would still recommend the company. Abigail provided different designs and options that demonstrated her design skills as well as her ability to connect with us in terms of what our goal of the remodel was. In our eyes, that was key.

This left me with an incomplete redesign: -I have drapery hung, but it is wrinkled as all getout because they didn't bother to bring a steamer. -They totally ignored accent items (pillows, etc). Basically they helped with the big ticket items (probably items they get a spiff on) yet ignored the pieces that tie a home together. When it was all said and done, I spent 5 figures with this firm and I didn't get the courtesy of a project follow up nor a simple "thank you for your business." Very disappointing. I wanted to be involved in choosing pieces myself, but have someone I could trust to advise me on whether things would actually work in our space, and Natalia has been perfect for that. As for the actual construction, 4Ever were willing to work around our schedule. We were provided a calendar that included the entire schedule. The process was very smooth, and the disruption was minimal. All the workers were punctual, professional, and respectful. Everyone cleaned up the area before they left for the day. We were also impressed with the fact that some of them were even willing to work on weekends to keep up with the schedule. Moreover, the craftmanship is excellent, and all the workers are seasoned and highly skilled. 4Ever transformed our 2 full bathroom with a tub to a very beautiful walk-in shower. We were also impressed with how often and quickly the team communicated with us. Every week the team leader emailed the update and let us know the upcoming works of the following week. Moreover, our team leader always texted me in advance and let us know when the workers were coming. The team always answered my questions right away. Indeed 4Ever went the extra 10 miles for us. For example, after the remodeling was over, team leader stopped by and made sure that everything was organized and clean. We paid $30k+ for a bathroom remodel and did not receive the design services, project management,…read moreor craftsmanship outlined in our contract. The contract specifies a clear process: design completion, written client approval, project schedule, parts ordering, then demolition. 4Ever did not follow this process at any stage. Our designer scheduled demolition before the design was approved. When she arrived for the contractor walkthrough, she claimed to not have received my voicemail or email requesting a design revision (included in the contract). She walked the contractor through the unapproved design and attempted to schedule work to start that Friday. When I objected, she claimed this was to stay on schedule with my contract. I had to quote the contract back to her via email, where it states "an updated start date and schedule will be provided during the design process." No project schedule was ever provided, despite the contract explicitly stating one would be. The designer then asked me to approve materials in Buildertrend with no final design, and told me NOT to refer to the design in Buildertrend to visualize my final bathroom because that design is "for the contractors" -- and to instead trust the studio samples. So I was supposed to commit $30k based on physical samples and my imagination alone. On May 1st, we reselected the materials (fortunately we opted to purchase hardware direct from Ferguson, after discovering 4Ever's significant markup) and our designer promised an updated design. By May 15th, my bathroom was fully demolished and unusable -- no design received, no design signed off, and no project schedule. I did not receive a final design until the following week, after email reminders, and it did not reflect what had been selected in the studio. I emailed our designer photos of the tile I had taken in the studio v. the tile in her design and asked her to change it. On May 20th, she said she'd look into it. I heard nothing back until I sent her an email reminder on May 27th. 4Ever had ordered a special-order, non-returnable tile without providing a final design and without my design approval -- disclosing this only on May 28th, after the bathroom had already been demolished. I was then told work could not continue until I approved the design. I left a voicemail with the manager, was promised a callback, and never received one. The tile issue was resolved and we signed off on the design, but problems persisted. A project schedule was never provided at any point, despite being promised in the contract's scope of work and requested multiple times. Our sales rep had quoted approximately 3 weeks total. Shower glass was not installed until July 3rd -- almost 2 months after demolition began. Once we were finally able to use the shower, we discovered a grout crack running from the ceiling down 2/3 of the shower wall. Upper management's response was that this was normal. It is not -- grout failure of this extent within days of installation is a workmanship defect. After I submitted 17 photos documenting cracks and bubbles, a contractor came to repair the work on July 21st. That same day, our PM tried to get us to sign the project closeout document, which triggers final payment. We declined to sign until we could verify the repair held. Our PM persisted, saying defects would be covered under warranty. Despite not signing the final document, 4Ever tried to send us an invoice for final payment. We gave it a week and scheduled our PM to collect final payment. On that day, we received a voicemail, email, and multiple app notifications stating we were overdue, would be charged late fees, and that 4Ever had already contacted their attorney and we would be liable for their legal fees. We later learned 4Ever placed a lien on our home over the disputed final payment. Post final payment and grout fix, we're finding more cracks in the grout. We did not receive $30k worth of a remodel. We received failure to follow contract process, defective workmanship, terrible communication, and legal threats. Do not recommend.

I decided to stage my condo to make it sell quicker and my realtor stumbled on Rachel, who is the owner of Staging Sells. I obviously never had a chance to meet her since I live in Los Angeles, but had a quick conversation over the phone with her. Immediately she began to talk about her background. Apparently 17 years as an interior designer. Her resume on the surface seems legit, but don't be fooled. Payment: I found it odd that she requested ALL the payment upfront. Not even half now, half later. This is how she works. She initially wanted to charge me $2,500 to stage a 2br 2ba condo. We agreed to $1700 as the final price. This $1700 included fake plants, cheap furniture, air mattresses, and zero decoration/staging in the bedrooms & bathrooms. What is Staging? Staging allows potential home owners to get a feel for the layout and helps them envision how they can potentially layout their new home, right? Well, this is probably exactly the opposite of what Rachel and her 17 years of experience did. 1) The living room is the most important. Rachel staged it as if it was a lounge of a dentist office. She included cheap, stiff, uncomfortable white couches that were meant to be in an office. 2) The direction the couches were facing was the kitchen, what the fuck? 3) The couches didn't even face the TV. She claims that you can "lay down" on the couch and watch TV. If you ever have guests over, you might as well throw that TV out the window. 4) When was the last time you saw a Canopy style bed in a master bedroom that's small? Apparently Rachel thought it was a bright idea to include one. Not only does it make the existing space look small, but canopy style beds are meant for single family homes. 5) Bathrooms: nothing in there, it's completely empty. No towels, no rugs...we couldn't even use pictures because it looked so barren. Communication: Hard to get a hold of her. She's pretty stubborn when it comes to the layout and design. I kindly asked Rachel to re-arrange add/remove some furniture so we can relist the property. She wanted $500 bucks for this b/c she claims she needs to hire movers. I don't think it costs $500 to remove this cheap furniture...this is highway robbery. As an interior designer, I'd imagine she would have some sense of professional obligation to fulfill the needs and goals of the client. I trusted her by paying upfront that she would make appropriate modifications and work in my best interest. She failed miserably. She is a crook that gives zero fucks about her clients. She hoards cheap furniture and actually has zero sense on interior design.

Nonetheless, Hilary was patient and a cooperative sounding board for my ideas. She did a superb job working with my space, selecting colors and fixtures. At the end of the engagement, she cheerfully refunded my unused retainer. Thus, I recommend her.

When we first started shopping around for a small kitchen project, we weren't sure who to work…read morewith. It was our first home renovation project, and we did not know how to go about the process. We first went to a big chain hardware store to get some guidance, but found them to be unclear and Not personable. But then we luckily found Habitar Design and Strategem Construction, and the difference was like night and day! From the very beginning, Mitch and the Habitar's team really took the time to listen to us, and made us feel heard and understood. We actually began our project way back in January, but when the pandemic began, our plans were understandably put on hold. However, Habitar was just stellar at communication overall - especially during the early months of the pandemic, when everything was so confusing for all of us. We never felt out of the loop with Habitar. The design process was thorough, and they explained everything in as much detail as we cared to hear. We fully understood the cost of all of our options, and so we didn't have any nasty surprises at the end. It was really nice to not worry about potential cost overruns through the job. We explained to them that we wanted to try and stick to our estimated cost as closely as possible in order to stick to our budget. However, like with any project, things happen, and sometimes the estimate is exactly that....an estimate! After expressing our concerns, and knowing that we were on a budget, Mitch and his team intervened to make sure that we all arrived to an agreeable situation. The Strategem construction team was professional, courteous, and respectful in every interaction we had. And while they were working in our home, we didn't even feel inconvenienced - they made as minimal an intrusion as possible. Any problems that came up were quickly resolved, and the whole team worked to find solutions. The whole process felt extremely personal - the owner, Mitch, even came out to see the job, and left us a small gift as a thank-you for our business! We would whole-heartedly recommend Habitar and Strategem to anyone who needs renovation work. If or when we ever have more renovation projects, we look forward to working with them in the future!
