I had heard from a tour guide that Maggie Mays was a place that college students like to go to. Being a recent graduate, I know that college students are pretty good at scoping out pretty tasty food for reasonable prices. I walked over to Maggie Mays and was seated right away. It is a super cute little space with friendly staff. I also appreciated that they have a pretty extensive menu. I thought it would be smart if I tried to order something that is not common in the U.S. I decided on the champ and sausages with baked beans. Being the silly American that I am, I assumed that the beans would come on the side, so I was a bit surprised when the champ came out smothered in them. I gave it a try and thought it was delicious, until I got about a quarter of the way through and could not eat any more beans. If you are a tourist, and baked beans on your potatoes is not in your flavor profile, definitely try something new, but prepare yourself. Seriously, who can eat that many baked beans?! I was even served baked beans with all my breakfasts. If I never ate another baked bean again it would be fine by me. Also, take a milkshake to go! They have so many fun flavors to choose from. I didn't know what most of the candies were, so I asked to waitress to pick one for me. She picked Oreo, which made me laugh, but it was delicious none-the-less! read more

Maggie Mays is one of the best places to go on a rainy day. With a warm, relatively cheap lunch menu, you can put down your umbrellas and pick up a wee cup of tea. We were lucky enough to get a seat because every time I've been past before, it has been rammed to the doors. The staff are very nice and will be able to get anything for you if you need it. It's not the finest food you are ever going to eat, but if you fancy a spot of lunch and it's not quite sitting in Botanic Gardens weather, then this is definately the first stop to go to. read more

4 Stars for the dessert!!!! I decided to go to Maggie Mays because it was really close to the B&B I was staying at and the prices seemed reasonable....especially since we are talking pounds! I ordered the fish fry and it was ok. Nothing great. BUT...then I ordered the toffee cheesecake, and that was freakin delicious!!!!!! This place seems to be a Belfast institution! I was here on a Saturday lunch time and it was super busy, but there seems to be a very quick turnover of customers. I can see why it is popular, the food isn't anything fancy but they do a solid sandwich ;-) So if you're looking for soup and sandwich, traditional fry or a hamburger, I'd give this place a shot. Seems like it's a bit of an institution. Nice looking food, indifferent-but-friendly service, decent enough tea, homely atmosphere - especially on a sunny day. Loads of veg-friendly stuff on the menu, but I just had the tea. No wifi, unfortunately, but that is probably why I was the only laptop in there. read more

Ridiculously loud music? Check. Uncomfortable, cramped conditions? Check. Same menu you'll see on any greasy breakfast place that has made a vague attempt to be a legitimate restaurant? Check. I get it. Belfast students are hungover every single day, it's why a place like this does extremely well. Guarantee there isn't a single student in the history of Queens that hasn't eaten here before, so in that respect it's great that a local business has such a great reputation that it can far outlast anywhere else nearby. But really though. This is just not great food, and it doesn't deserve to cost as much as it does. Go to French Village 30 seconds up the road, it may cost a little extra, but it has a far better menu, isn't cramped, and also serves food that isn't just perceived as a hangover cure. read more

Had a lovely meal in Maggie Mays. They have a really good menu full of traditional home cooked treats such as beef stew, lasagne, burgers, roast chicken, fajitas etc. There was plenty of choice and it was as cheap as chips! We had a main meal each with a side and drink and the total bill came to approx £16! I had the peppered chicken with garlic bites, the chicken came out as a roast breast and wing, perfectly cooked and the garlic bites were delicious too. The shop was very busy with every table being used and there were plenty of staff available to cope, there was background music and the atmosphere was buzzing. I loved it. read more

Where better for an Ulster Fry than Maggie Mays? Adorned with paintings of the Titanic (because where in Belfast isn't?) with simple decor, it's an ideal place to while away your morning, reading the papers or listening to the radio. It's obviously aimed at students - but don't let that put you off. On our first visit, we had an Ulster Fry consisting of soda bread, potato bread, hash browns, a pancake, sausage, eggs, mushrooms, tomato and bacon. When I asked to substitute you eggs, mushrooms and tomato for one measly sausage, I was told I could only substitute non meat items for non meat items. That's why I've given Maggie Mays a 4 star and not a 5 star. Nevertheless, it was a tasty, carbohydrate-laden start to our day and just as unhealthy as I'd hoped. Soda bread is my new favourite thing. Maggie Mays is a great, cheap place to start your day. Don't let the studenty vibe put you off! read more

Went here today for lunch and was left disappointed. The food was very good but the service was terrible. Is it to much to ask for a hello when you come through the door or a thanks when your paying your bill. The place is a glorified fast food restaurant that just wants you to eat and leave quickly. I was asked for my order twice within two minutes of sitting down, then they got the order wrong. If your in a rush and don't mind what you eat then this place is for you. If your like me and like to enjoy lunch and get what you asked for then go somewhere else. read more

I went to Maggie Mays for the first time,since I was a student at Queens, last week. I'm afraid to say that I was not impressed! We were shown to a minuscule table that we had trouble squeezing into, our order was taken very quickly and our drinks arrived within a matter of minutes, so far so good... That's where things started to go downhill! We had been there about 10 mins when another couple sat at the table next to us, ordered their food and within 10 minutes their order had been brought to their table. The waitress asked us where our food was.... How we were expected to know is beyond me, she went away to check and wasn't seen again..... We waited about 45 mins and eventually left without having eaten... In my opinion Maggie Mays could do with a few less tables so that you aren't left sitting practically on someone's knee, and also could do a bit of a better job keeping track of orders unless they actually want the customers in the kitchen! read more

As a student was definitely a fan of Maggie Mays and used to always come back for nostalgic purposes. Does a great full breakfast and also milkshakes of any flavour. I'd lunch here last week with friends. I used to come here year ago (as a student) the place hasn't changed and is as popular as ever. Really good value for quality food. Friendly efficient staff. It's always busy but service is super fast. I love their fry ups! There is a really extensive milkshake list but as I'm lactose intolerant I couldn't sample one :( perhaps they'll do a soya version at some point! Here's hoping! read more

Maggie Mays is a student favourite in this part of Belfast. I'd go as far as to say that it's a national treasure. There's only one meal worth popping in for here though; the Ulster fry. You can get burgers and chips in McDonalds or the van down the road if you really want to as well as everything else they serve on the menu, but you cannot beat a Maggie Mays-made fry. Maggie's is a bohemian kind of cafe, so if your standards are particularly high, I wouldn't visit! But always a pleasure to nip into for coffee and breakfast. read more

Not much to add as there are already so many reviews of this place. It's decent enough for the type of food that it does, no problems there, or with the decent enough ambience in the place. But the seating is all tiny tiny booths that are so uncomfortable it's hard to believe and quite inflexably if you are with company they dont let you split the payment leaving your party sorting amongst themselves for change. read more

Really enjoyed the place. After a brisk walk around city centre, i stumbled across this place. Ordered a hot chocolate to warm me up, and then the special of the day, pork loin. The portions are huge! the pork was very tender, and surprise there was stuffing in the middle! the mashed potatoes were very delicious with chives in them, and then there was some mashed carrots. Perfect to warm me up and fill me! Could not finish the portion, so I wish there was someone that I could have shared the food with. The location of this place is right next to the Botanic Garden, so after a meal, you can take a stroll, and visit the Ulster Museum! read more

I absolutely loved Maggie Mays when I was up in Belfast. Granted I was only there for the weekend, but I still managed to go there 4 times in 3 days...Yes, the decor is a bit 'Wild West Saloon' and the menu might be a bit basic- burgers and sandwiches mostly- but who cares when the food is good and the staff nice? I am not a gourmet nor would I ever claim to be one, but to me you can't do anything wrong with good-sized portions of burgers and fries for around £5. I would recommend the Chilli bowl, which I had twice or one of the changing daily specials. And yes, the coffee isn't bad either and the cheesecake was good ;) read more

Went here for some lunch recently. The menu is quite extensive ranging from quick snacks to more substantial dishes like tacos, pies and salads. The frys are probably their biggest seller and are good value with a pot of tea. Not as fancy as some other places to eat in this area but a good hole in the wall to grab a quick bite. read more

Cheep and cheerful, Maggie Mays is a real Belfast institution. It's a great place to come for an all day breakfast - the fry ups are massive, always cooked to perfection and a guaranteed hangover cure. The usual staples of lasagne, pasta bakes, pies, baked potatoes, baguettes and desserts etc are available throughout the day and into the evening as well. Very popular with students in the evenings, especially as you can bring-your-own. It's not the place for a romantic date, however, but can be a cosy place to start a night out. read more

I've been here many times over the past 12 years or more. I think it deserves 5 stars, in a category of it's own. It's so easy to take for granted, and many of us do. Not just a cafe...not quite a restaurant...there's nowhere else like Maggie May's. The menu's extensive, and varied and the food is great because it's ACTUALLY home cooking and not brought in frozen e.g. the burger is their own recipe and tastes delicious compared to the patty you might expect in a lot of other cafes/'greasy spoons'. Byob is a nice touch and the decor is quirky and homely. It's always very clean and the staff are fine. The prices have barely changed in a decade. Maggie May's is becoming an institution. Others may complain about how long it takes to get served but they should note that the kitchen is small and that it's ALWAYS very busy with students, locals, business people, and tourists.
