It's a nice small theatre, just a few screens and it's well maintained. The staff was friendly and they started taking cards/Apple Pay so it's no longer cash only and the snack prices are reasonable. BEWARE OF OUTRAGEOUS PRICES!!! I am sad to report that after 25 years in the Valley and many great nights at the Magic Lantern I had a horrible one this evening. We were late and rushing and blew in, asked for 2 tickets, a medium popcorn and, why not? a glass of white wine. I swiped my phone to pay and cruised in. When I was filling my water cup, I looked at my phone - I had just paid $77 (plus a 15% tip) for 2 tickets, one popcorn, and one glass of wine. I was stunned. I went back to the counter and asked what the heck and he said that it was my 9 oz glass of wine which had cost $37. Was it printed on the board? Yes. Had I looked in my haste? No. I said "Oh Gosh I would never drink a $37 glass of wine! That was a huge mistake!" He said "Well sorry, it's written right there." I stood there for a few minutes and asked why he did not make a practice of calling out the outrageous price before pouring that particular wine and he said again, "Well it's written right on the sign." It was clear he was not budging so I left the wine on the counter (on principle can't pay $37 for a glass of wine in a plastic cup) and went into the theater but I was so unnerved that I couldn't settle so we left. He refunded my tickets but NOT MY TIP! as I realized after I got home. And they don't answer the phone and the voicemail is full. Was it technically my fault? Yes. Could he have kept a longtime local customer at a total loss of about $5 to the theater? Yes. Yet he opted to send me packing. By the way, there were 3 other people in the movie I was going to see. Seems like a poor human decision as well as a questionable business one. read more

We had a good experience here. We arrived early which is a mistake since they wait til the very minute of when they open even if you're outside in the frigid cold... also they're a cash only place but they have a ATM inside. People were friendly enough and assortment was good and the movie was good. Theater was good. read more

If I was home in Chicago I"d probably be complaining that this movie theater is way too small, but since I'm in Sun Valley I'm all about the cozy, quaint atmosphere. They only play 4-5 movies at a time and being the movie addict that I am I've managed to see most of them. This movie theater is a pleasant surprise. I have been to other ski towns with nothing other than the mountain to keep you occupied. Magic Lantern has 4 screens all showing current releases. My husband and I make a point of seeing everything showing. My only complaint, although a small one, is that during our 10 day stay the movies never changed. Good thing we are here to ski! read more

I am so DONE. Planning our family night around movie times at Magic Lantern movie cinema! Last staw tonight when we show up for an advertised 7:30 movie that really started at 7:00. I can't count how many times this has happened to us here at this movie theatre. We are residents and this inefficiency is an embarrassment for the community; especially this week after Christmas when plans are tight and busy. These guys really need to get their act together! Their website is ALWAYS out of date. Twice we have checked their website and gone to see a movie to get there and be told it is no longer playing. It's like they deliberately keep a movie advertised to get people to arrive and be forced choose a different movie. Why don't they just list the DATE of the last showing?! The theatre itself is fine, but the locals don't appreciate these underhanded tactics. Or poor website management. Whatever it is Magic Lantern needs to get more professional! read more

...definitely a cozy/intimate theater. We watched Avatar. How cool is it that they serve beer and wine? Prices are modest for Sun Valley (or anywhere else). Seating was very comfortable (reclining) and included armrests that fold up to create 'love seats'. Sound was a bit disappointing but the overall experience made up for it. read more

My kids desperately wanted to see the movie minions. We looked to see if it was playing but it was not, so we decided to go see an ant documentary. Imagine our surprise when we went to the theater and found it was in fact playing! The popcorn at no taste and the exit was very confusing. I very much enjoy the Magic Lantern cinemas. HOWEVER, last Friday, August 7, I was heartily disappointed with the rudeness of the ticket booth clerk. I asked her 2 simple, pertinent questions (if credit cards were accepted and if the theater was very crowded). She answered both questions in a rude, curt manner. As a customer I expect politeness, and it is a shame your clerk was not capable of that. read more

Super cranky service if you can call it that. It was surreal the ticket guy seemed stoned and apathetic while the concession lady acted like a lady in a haunted mansion who had seen so many murders you barely registered as alive to her. the only reaction out of her was when she saw cold hard cash. The movie theater in town, prices are high but watching a movie in the Screening rooms which only have 30 seats each, is pretty cool.
