Really not so grand…read more This is my second time staying here and it's gotten worse since my last visit which has only been maybe 2 or 3 years ago. OK, so this is probably the best hotel you can stay at in or around Natchez but they are obviously floating by on that. The lobby is really nice, but that's where it ends. They don't seem to regularly upkeep the place. Cons: -Had a difficult time getting into the room multiple times, weird room key card issue -They are supposed to be a smoke free hotel, but our room smell like smoke and was musty smelling -No luggage rack. I really don't like having to put my suitcase on the bed or floor to unpack -Cheap outdated furniture -AC unit doesn't work well. I was here two nights and though the AC was set to 65, my family and I woke up hot multiple times. -Fridge was disgusting! Had to put our water in the door of the fridge because the other portion of the fridge was soiled and not clean -Bathroom sink leaks everytime it was turned on, toilet is way to low and the toilet handle was so loose I was afraid I was going to break it everytime I flushed. -Room too expensive and there was an added fee for the pool and Wi-Fi. Not cool -I wasn't expecting much from their breakfast offerings but it was not good at all. Everything was in those warming chafing dishes but everything but the grits was cold. French toast tasted like bread with maple syrup and it was hella chewy, breakfast sausage low quality, eggs fake, grits were actually good( in comparison) Pros: -Staff was friendly -Our room had a great view of the Mississippi River -We had a place to lay our head -My family liked how big and fluffy the pillows were. I had a crook in my neck both nights, but no fault of theirs -Cute, walkable area behind the hotel that had music, vendors and Christmas decorations Due to slim pickings, this probably won't be my last time here, but this hotel could really be nice if they put more effort into the rooms and upkeep. They need to do better.

10/10 do NOT recommend…read more This was one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had. The first room we were given had the toilet seat cover completely removed. When we brought it to the hotel's attention, we were initially told there were no other rooms available, but then we were moved to another room. Unfortunately, the second room was not any better. The bathroom was filthy. I took toilet paper and did a brief wipe of the bathroom floor/counter area, and the amount of dirt and grime that came up was disgusting. The bathroom floor, corners, light fixture area, and shower space were visibly dirty and poorly maintained. There was also leaking water in the shower area, which made the bathroom feel unsanitary and potentially unsafe. On top of that, the refrigerator did not get cold despite being turned to the coldest setting, and the microwave appeared to have a short. These are not minor inconveniences -- these are basic cleanliness, safety, and maintenance issues that should never be present in a hotel room being rented to paying guests. It honestly felt like this business does not care about the condition of the rooms or the people paying to stay there. Guests should not be charged money to stay in a room with filth, broken appliances, water leaks, and obvious neglect. I have never stayed in a hotel like this, and I never will again. Extremely disappointing, unsanitary, and unacceptable. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

I was afraid of it being too "antique" for me, but it was very nostalgic and gave comfort of an upscale vintage mansion that I was looking for. Highly recommend. Also, visit the other mansions while you're there and take in the artwork and pay attention to the history. You'll love it!

I will preface this review with the fact that I stay in hotels roughly ~115 days per year with a…read moremix between all US brands. (I have Platinum Elite status with Choice Hotels.) This is by far the worst hotel I have stayed at in the last 6+ years, to include internationally, in second and third world countries. I very rarely leave a review but in this case, I felt the need to conduct a review. I did not bother to provide this information to the hotel staff nor ask for or provide them an opportunity to offer compensation or even change the room. Based on feedback from the other individuals in my group, their rooms were in a very similar condition. Some of them slept in their clothes on top of the beds due to the poor conditions and appearance of unclean rooms. The room was extremely run down and the bathroom was disgusting. Honestly, if I had the opportunity and time that night, I would have just left and stayed somewhere else. (I have photos for proof of the following). The shower/tub had a massive hairball on the drain indicating the room had not been cleaned and there were large brown streak marks in the tub. Although it appeared that someone had defecated in the tub, it was actually rust because I attempted to wipe and clean the tub prior to taking a shower. I used toilet paper to pick up the hair so there is no excuse or reason for it to have been there if the room had been properly cleaned. My wife was so uncomfortable with the unsanitary conditions that she placed a towel down in the tub in order to keep her feet clean while in the shower. Everything metal in the room was rusted, some to the point there was no shine/coating left, including all the lamps, the towel/linen racks, and base of the doors. The bathroom counter was clearly unfinished and just added to the overall extremely poor condition of the room. The smoke detector was removed from the wall and there were exposed wires and a large hole. It seemed so out of place, and based on the totality of the circumstances, I climbed on the bed and used a phone flashlight to check for any "devices." There was a significant amount of, what appeared to be, candle wax dripped on the carpet around the end of the bed. The A/C unit was extremely loud and had a constant loud buzzing noise (whistle), although it was able to keep the room at a comfortable temperature. The staff was nice enough but upon arrival, I did have to wait, saying hello a couple times, walking and wandering around the lobby and storage room areas, finally locating an employee who could check us in. I was completely and utterly disappointed with my accommodations. I seriously hope my review is taken seriously and major actions are taken to improve the experience for future guests. I come to the area annually and I will never stay at this property again, and frankly it makes me question the Choice brand in its entirety.

In 1811, Lyman Harding, the first Attorney General of Mississippi, hired Levi Weeks to build the mansion. Levi designed the house to be, in his words, the "most magnificent building in the state." After Harding died in 1820, the building was bought by Dr. Stephen Duncan. Here's a little history on Dr. Duncan,... He was born and studied medicine in Pennsylvania, but moved to Natchez in 1808 and became the wealthiest cotton planter and the second-largest slave owner in the U.S. with over 2,200 slaves. He owned 15 cotton and sugar plantations, served as President of the Bank of Mississippi, and held major investments in railroads and lumber. He became an influential Mississippi backer of the American Colonization Society, which promoted the removal of freed American blacks to Liberia, a colonial settlement in West Africa. Under his leadership during the 1830s, the Mississippi Colonization Society removed 571 African-Americans to Liberia. He was a steadfast Unionist during the American Civil War. He tried unsuccessfully to lobby the Lincoln Administration to help him protect his slaveholdings after the Union army occupied large swaths of Mississippi. But appeals from Duncan and his family members largely went unheeded. In late 1863, he left the Confederacy by Union gunboat and relocated to New York City where he lived until his death in 1867. Auburn and 222 acres was sold by the family to the city of Natchez in 1911 and is now a historic house museum in a public park.

The corners of the bathroom were very dirty. I somehow expected a room at an antebellum mansion to be pristine. The breakfast in the morning was just so so. It was scrambled eggs, bacon and grits. Generally when we stay in fancy bed and breakfasts, the breakfast is something special. Some interesting new thing or something we've never tried before. This is on the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail and on the Mississippi Blues Trail list online as the only location in Louisiana but blends in with the rest. I did find out that not only was Jerry Lee Lewis born here, but his first cousin Jimmy Swaggert and Mickey Gilley was his cousin as well and was a country music singer. Many other musicians are highlighted here that are Louisiana natives such as Aaron Neville and his brothers and Fats Domino. This whole museum was amazing. I did not catch the name of the guy working when I stopped by, but he was a tall friendly gentleman who showed a lovely video of all that are Louisiana native and was very enthusiastic about everything. I am so very glad I made the trek here. Admission is free, but they do run on donations.

The Natchez Indian culture dates back to the 1200's and survived up in the 1700's. In Mississippi, the Spaniards encountered the tribes is the 1500's. The French interacted in the early 1700's and documented with great detail the Natchez people and their way of life. This landmark provides a brief but detailed look into that culture and so is well worth a stop. As others have mentioned, Avis, who works behind the counter, is a longtime resident of the area and well versed in the history. She is extremely friendly and a delight to talk with so take advantage of her knowledge when you stop in!
