I was once an avid student and supporter of Ajax and Magnolia Yoga studio. I even considered taking their teacher certification program. It was a place of refuge and healing for the many stressors of life at the time. I had gone to City Hall to advocate for funding for the studio, had written an article about the merits of the studio and even defended Ajax when family members told me she seems very narcissistic. Unfortunately one evening I got to class in the nick of time but the app would not accept my payment because class had technically already started. I was paying with my Doordash Visa card. I went home and received a text from Ajax asking for my payment. I apologized and explained what happened and offered to bring her cash or Zelle her the next morning. She told me that I wouldn't do this at any other business and that it was unacceptable etc. I felt like I was being shamed for something that was an honest mishap. At the time an individual class was only $16. I explained that I was not trying to get over on her but still I was shamed and made to feel like I was somehow turning against her for trying to explain and defend myself. She showed zero understanding, zero compassion. The comments in other reviews about her toxic and egoic behavior ring true. As much as I loved the studio and some of the instructors, and wanted to support a Black owned studio I no longer desire to go. Go at your own risk. At this point, her reputation for the shitty treatment of people proceeds her. read more

I found Mangolia Yoga Studio from a Google search of yoga studios around my hotel. I signed up for the Warm Vinyasa Flow class on Sunday at 10am. I arrived around 15 minutes prior to class so that I could get situated. I met Giselle, who was the instructor of the class, also helped to check me in and acquaint myself with the studio. The studio was beautiful. Even before I walked into the studio I noticed the lovely glass mural of the yogini in camel pose. Everything felt intentionally placed. The lounge area made the place feel warm and inviting. There was plenty of cubbies. The practice space was warm and toasty when I walked in. I got a great sweat through the class, but I didn't find it unbearable. It certainly didn't get to Bikram temperature, which is around 105 degrees. I loved how Giselle's class was like a slow flow. You don't have to move quickly and dynamically in vinyasa to feel like you're putting in the work. You can hold the asanas for several breaths and still feel challenged especially when you're activating every muscle in your body. Giselle offered functional cues and many modifications, which was awesome because it makes the poses accessible for everyone. I would highly recommend her class for all-levels. read more

Nice clean studio but at least the instructor I had took herself way too seriously. She told the whole class we were not allowed to modify poses and had to wait in between poses to drink water or towel off?? Not to mention she didn't demonstrate a single pose. New Orleans, LA - In town for a conference. Free yoga sessions were included on site at the conference hotel each morning on the pool deck. Ajax, the studio owner, taught our 30 minute class. She was very encouraging to a class which consisted of newbies and veteran yogis. After traveling, the stretches we did really helped my aches and twisted muscles. She also recommended a couple stretches for daily use by office workers to counter balance our key board typing ways. I've tried them subsequently and they were very helpful. Also Appreciated Ajax's flexibility in our particular situation as class started late due to hotel issue with the pool deck door. Would attend a class at the studio when im next in town. What a splendid yoga experience. We came in for a private yoga class and were treated to a challenging yet fun experience. Magnolia is the first Black owned yoga studio in NOLA and their space is inviting the moment you enter. They have cubbies for your shoes, a lovely seating area, and showers/changing rooms available before and after class. Our instructor was Ajax and they provided fantastic instruction for beginners and a sequence that flowed well together. Our session was hot yoga so with the NOLA humidity you definitely get sweaty. They have towels and coconut water for sale though which was great to have. Anytime I'm back in NOLA this will definitely by my go to spot. read more

If you are visiting it is a great place to practice, With Andre, but avoid Ajax.The owner, she gives out wrong infromation such as yoga prevents arthritis which she suffers from ,yet yoga hasn't healed it, yet she tells the class that yoga prevents arthritis ,she says yoga build bone density. Dont believe her, block her out as she talks alot during the class, asking about the best alcohol, between tequila and vodka. She is looking for weak people , with low self esteem to manipulate , if you are in the class she will call you out claiming she is trying to help you when in essence she wants you to get off the mat for certain poses, when you are dripping wet, and God forbids you ignor her then you will be reprimanded. I told her i dont need to take her class as our energies does not align , but i can take other instructor class she claimed i am refusing her help and cancelled my membership. read more

I found yoga in 2012 after a running injury, but it pretty much remained a supplement to running and I mainly practice the vinyasa and restorative forms. I started doing more hot yoga in 2019 and tried out a few different studios. I have been attending Magnolia Yoga Studio since the beginning of 2019- in fact, my first class was on Mardi Gras Day when the studio has their big party since the studio is on the parade route of Zulu. After that I purchased a 10-class pass with Magnolia and found that I really enjoyed the challenge of the hot yoga style and all of the instructors' love and care. After I was done traveling in the summer, I did a 3 month special and then joined as a member when Amber got me to sign up. I have now been a member of Magnolia Yoga Studio for over 5 years and it has truly allowed me to deepen my yoga practice, my courage, and my relationship with myself. About two weeks after I officially joined as a member, the pandemic hit. Despite this, the studio pivoted within just a matter of a week or two to Instagram live classes and virtual classes so we could keep up our practice. These classes were really a lifeline for me in 2020-2021. Ajax was also very very diligent about safely and intentionally re-opening the studio and regularly consulted with our health department and doctors during that period. The classes are fun (check out Music Monday and Hotties for Pilates) and certainly tough, but they are worth it. There are also lots of interesting challenges that are done 2 or 3 times of year to help students/clients stay motivated and I appreciate the excitement those bring to the studio. I am very grateful for Magnolia Yoga and would not have been able to achieve really ambitious goals or get through really challenging moments in my life without this studio and the people who practice and teach here. read more

Everything I needed and more. I was in NOLA for a work trip and popped in for a 6:15 AM Wednesday class. A social media friend tagged them in a picture, and I was hype to check out a black owned yoga studio! The space: I was first impressed by how pretty and welcoming the space was, and second by how helpful and friendly the instructor was. She got me registered quickly, and gave me some reassurance that all I needed to do was focus on staying in the room (it was a hot class). There is a lot of beautiful natural light here in both the open lobby area and the classroom. Beautiful pictures/black art is scattered about. The locker room was CLEAN which I loved, I didn't take a shower but the showers looked clean, which I love. Instruction: Excellent. I wish I asked her name! But her picture is all over the posters for their Mexico retreat & attached. She was dope. I felt both challenged and supported during class. My hot yoga practice is pretty inconsistent when I'm at home, for most of 2018 I went on average, twice a month, so I struggled a little with some poses. But I felt her encouragement, and she helped me realign when I was off balance with specific, pointers. I love that she remembered my name and helped me through the tougher poses. It was clear that she knew what she was talking about. Price: It was relatively affordable, $15 for a drop in class which is about the same as NYC. If I lived in NOLA I would pay for the $50/month unlimited, because that is a GREAT price. read more

I've been here before while on vacation in the New Orleans French quarter. I've never had yoga like this before! It's a very beautiful studio overall. It has such a positive vibe here and a tracks a diverse range of people. The studios owner/instructor's name is Ajax. Her studio teaches Bikram yoga which is a style of yoga that involves practicing yoga at high temperatures. There are apparently good health benefits associated with this practice. The actual room where all the action happens is sweltering as she has the heater on also. All I can say is make sure you bring a towel and giant bottle of water and drink plenty of it ahead of time. It was definitely a good work out though it would take me a bit to get used to it. I was sweating from head to toe, but I am sure it has many health benefits. The instructor will open the door periodically to control the temperature and give us some relief. She does provide you with the opportunity to leave the room if it becomes too intense for you. Though it was difficult for me, I chose to endure the entire one and a half hour class. It's definitely a good work out if you're interested in exploring other styles of yoga. My trip was to be 7 days long and as an avid yoga practitioner I certainly looked forward to experiencing yoga through a local, NOLA studio. So, I purchased an unlimited pass via Mindbody. Sadly, it snowed where I live and in some states I was going to pass through. My trip got cancelled so I let the studio know in advance per MindBody's advice. Communication was spotty for two weeks until I finally received the following response: "There is nothing to resolve. There are no refunds it's in our website. We are a Black owned business we do not tolerate white girl Karen syndrome. If you are just roaming around town buying classes from studios then asking for refunds in the middle of a pandemic. You will need more than Yoga to fix your privileged bullshit. Namaste " read more

I've tried yoga in the park, goat yoga, trap yoga, rooftop yoga, yoga and beer, yoga and blunts and nothing compares AT ALL to the experience I had at Magnolia Yoga Studio. Oftentimes when you come as a newcomer I'd be completely intimidated that wasn't the case this time. The owner actually taught our class and she was sooooo welcoming and patient and encouraging. Never did she make us feel like the completely uncoordinated beginners that we were. The space is magnificent, it has such a clean and positive energy that simply radiates throughout the studio. I can't wait to go back. If you're a local or just in town visiting for a few days and want to check them out you definitely should. It's BEYOND worth it. read more

Took my first yoga class here and I enjoyed it. I've done yoga elsewhere before and honestly did not like yoga in general because of it. I liked this 26.2 class I took because we were stretching and doing the poses only once or twice on each side so it wasn't like holding warrior pose the entire time. I took Cecilia and she was encouraging. She didn't demonstrate the poses so sometimes I was a little lost but I just looked at the person next to me. The room was definitely hot and my clothes were soaking wet afterwards but it was a great workout! I can't wait to try the other instructors and classes they offer. read more

Magnolia Yoga Studio is probably the most affordable studio in the area, so it's perfect for a drop in visit. This is a personal preference, but I'm not a huge fan of Bikram yoga and when I came here it was very much Bikram-inspired. I don't think the website is very clear on that, but it might be because of Bikram's copyright and whatnot. The room was heated, but definitely not the same humidity/heat as Bikram classes I have gone to. It was a particularly cold that so it probably affected that? Otherwise, the studio is good. YES. I had just gotten off a plane, was a little frazzled, and I rolled up to the Friday noon class at 11:55. My New York mode kicked in, but the woman who checked me in, I think it was the owner, Ajax, was chill, relaxed, and got me all set. I sometimes forget that not everywhere is so fast paced, and in NOLA, I can take a breath when I feel like I'm running late. The class was amazing. I used to be a bikram junkie, but definitely pulled away from it after years of it consuming me. This was a WONDERFUL welcome back to the practice, shorter, still a fabulous sweat-your-everything-out workout. Everything came back to me, and I remembered what every postures purpose was. My husband and I dropped in for our first class this morning. Elaine was the instructor. She was very helpful before we started class. Her class was warm yoga and boy it was warm. The class was 90 degrees which was more than hot enough for us. Elaine's instructions were thorough and calming especially her voice. We had to take some breaks during the session but we truly enjoyed the class. We will return soon. The space itself is inviting and calming. The women's changing room is pretty spacious but once the class dismissed it filled very quickly. They offer mat and towel rentals as well as water. read more

I have been dying to try Magnolia Yoga Studio and their 21DaysHotYoga Challenge was the perfect time for me to jump in and leave the excuses. I'm no novice to yoga but this was my first time doing hot yoga and I absolutely loved it. Ajax and her team of instructors are welcoming, knowledgeable, and extremely encouraging. This is a small studio with one yoga room (closed off from the common area) with a padded yoga floor, so you don't have to double up on mats and there are male and female lockers with showers. This no way a reflection of Magnolia Yoga Studio but as for MY personal preference, I loathe the parking situation. Due to my schedule, I would have to attend evening or very early morning sessions which means I have to either park by a meter or find free parking. Free parking and walking a block or two wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the area. I just don't feel comfortable walking at dusk, alone in that area. I do NOT want to deter anyone from Magnolia Yoga Stdio, this is just my personal preference. Please, please visit and bask in the wonderful energy with Ajax and the gang. read more

I've been wanting to get back to practicing yoga ever since the birth of my baby. So I've been looking around and saw the intro deal of $30 for the month. The monthly rate to become a membership is extremely affordable, probably the most affordable in the area. The studio is extremely clean and I think the courses are well taught for beginners. I had to dock a star because there's not a lot of variety in the classes offered. It's like a shorten bikram series and they just started offering vinyasa twice a week. For those who aren't into bikram, and want to focus more on flow and core, this is not the place. What also came to my impression, is that class does not start on time. I've been attending a few classes with my month pass, and not once has class started on time. It stresses me out a bit because I'm going during my lunch break and need to head back to work! Overall, If you want a clean space just to sweat it out and don't have a rigged schedule, then check this place out! read more

I hate to say it, but the negative reviews of this studio and its owner are very true. I really wanted to love this place, but after practicing here for a while it became painfully obvious that this is a very toxic environment created by the owner. For example, in her classes the owner has the new students move to the back of the class away from the mirror to where they could not check their alignment and had the more experienced students practice to the front of the room right in front of the mirror. Mirrors are important to beginners or those with alignment issues so that they can physically check their alignment when needed or when qued by an instructor (which is never done in the owner "Ajax"'s classes... in fact you often will hear her say lock your knees when in padahastassana (forward fold). You should NEVER lock your knees back and hyperextend your joints. To tell the students in poses "push, push!" Is also such a bad que and irresponsible as it encourages less experienced or less knowledgeable students to push their body more than they should, beyond its physical capabilities, and incur injuries. No one body is the same and a teacher should never teach a one size fits all class. This unfortunately is very common in Hot "Bikram" style classes. A teacher should always honor the student and their capabilities or their body, as they know it best. It is also noted that blocks and straps are discouraged in all their classes and if you bring them, the owner will yell at you if you use them. It is traditional for no props or water in a Hot "Bikram" style class, but not Vinyasa. I have been to a Bikram trained studio and they even allowed props and water. After all the scandal with Bikram, studios have moved away from his harmful teachings and have adopted the 26 posture series because of it's benefits. But, I digress. The owner is not Bikram trained. But like Bikram, she will yell and demean the student, especially if they leave or take water when she has not allowed. Those days of egotistical teachings of yoga, which is very unyogic should have been gone. I thought we were doing yoga here, which teaches kindness, acceptance and ridding the ego. Not at all what the owner projects to her students. I have seen the effects of when a student respectfully voices their opinion about a class, an issue, an injury, limited capabilities, or something they didn't like about another teacher's class, or even when the student stands up to the owner when she is wrong or treated them poorly...... they are treated disrespectfully and then ousted from the studio. After I observed her refuse students from taking classes after standing up to her, that was the last straw. I cancelled my membership after that. Someone has to stand up for what is right and not be scared, intimidated by, or (sometimes the most hard thing) put their needs last when the most important thing is to not support such a negative environment. This studio will draw you in with it's beauty and the sense of community with the friendliness from the other students, but every student I have ever talked to over the past year knew how bad the owner is and were just trying to stay out of her radar so that they could practice their yoga. This is the cheapest and one of the most physically comfortable yoga studios in the New Orleans area, but also the most toxic. This is also reflected by the fact that the teachers do not stay for long and the classes continue to dwindle in size. Sad, so sad. So much potential here if it weren't for the cut throat mess and ego of the owner. If you ever have an issue and try to get it rectified, know that if the owner feels insulted or like she is not in control in any way you will pay the price by being ousted in some way or having your membership cancelled without the ability to recoup the costs without doing so legally. Not worth it, a yoga studio should be a sacred place for all to be a part of and should never invoke fear, shaming, or dictatorship. New Orleans has so many other better affordable yoga studios where the owners and teachers actually practice what they preach. read more

One of my all time favorite yoga studios in the US. I've visited the studio over my past 3 visits (2016 and 2017) and have had Vinyasa and their signature hot "Magnolia Yoga" classes with Ajax (founder) Adrione, and Elaine. All three instructors were outstanding in their teaching abilities and overall personality. Since the studio is on Basin St (just over the N border of the Quarter) it's in an ideal position for tourists in the Quarter or CBD areas. I'm a big fan of bikram and hot yoga in general and just finished my 3rd class in 3 days during this visit. It's become an absolute for every time I'm in town. The studio has one very large heated room and then locker rooms (with showers/dressing areas) and $1 mat rentals. Very convenient for tourists or locals on the way to/from work. Note: I've been to many very popular studios with renowned teachers that have a cold, transactional, vibe to them and you will find the opposite at Magnolia (with high quality instruction). Today was MLK Day, and Ajax, the owner of the studio and one of the most warm souled individuals I've met, hosted a Dream themed class. The class way rather packed, but there was absolutely no issue with being so close to one another! Definitely taught you to be more respectful of one another's personal space. But at the beginning of the class, Ajax began by telling everyone about her dreams: past, present, future. We then all had the chance to introduce ourselves and talk about dreams that WE have. Today's class was absolutely beautiful. Listening to everyone talk about their personal goals and hopes was eye opening - to say the least - and made me so aware of the magnificent people that I was surrounded by. This diverse class is more than just getting sweaty. I never plan on going another day without a class at Magnolia Yoga. read more
