Finding the hotel is a bit of a challenge; google maps will take you via Mr. Toads wild ride, the good news is that there is an easier road to traverse, long but at least your car won't stall out attempting to go up the cobblestone stone, old road / route. Once you arrive the view is amazing. The pool oversees the Douro Valley & River. Drinks are brought out to you be it by the poolside or the outdoor veranda. The rooms, book early or like us you'll land in one of the smaller rooms, still nice, but a window would have made it great. Sheets to towels were top grade, no robes were offered, could have been because we were in one of the smaller rooms. Pillows - not comfortable, bed was cozy though. Bathroom was clean, the toilet is separated out, great for utilization. They offer dinner at an extra cost, which was well made by staffers. Remember to dress for dinner, nothing fancy, but also not your shorts. Breakfast comes with your reservation, continental, nice breads, expresso made upon request. WIFI is slow, but they've got it & it's free.

We had a cursory winery tour with a group of around 10 people-all Portuguese except my wife and I. It was your basic tour, walking through the winery, looking at machinery, followed by a visit to their little museum (shrine to the olden days) assembled by the winery matriarch. Afterwards, we sat outside the nice wine shop overlooking the river with amazing view and tried three wines-one white, 1 red and 1 port-nothing special to my palet. What IS SPECIAL are the amazing views from the property and the wonderful restaurant Skip the winery and tasting and book in advance a table for lunch. Depending on the menu you can order a wine flight to accompany your lunch-this way you can taste the wines while skipping the highly mechanized and uninteresting winery. This is basically an open air museum - of rock art…read more I took an afternoon tour to Penascosa; due to the light, the Penascosa visit is only available in the afternoon or at night, and at night it's more pricey especially if there's no one else on the tour (there's a minimum charge regardless of group size). The 2 other major sites can be visited in the morning. Theoretically it might be possible to visit some of the sites without paying, but the major ones are probably all in restricted areas and may not be easy to get to without a guide (we went down narrow dirt tracks for Penascosa) and certainly you probably won't be able to divine much without a guide - the rock art isn't always easy to see without someone to guide you through it (and with sketches showing what you're looking at more clearly). Given that the open air carvings are thousands of years old, they're in pretty good shape, and it's interesting to hear theories about how and why they were made.

Apparently in Portugal, any 4x4 is called a jeep. One hour tour is just the start. I could come back and do the morning tour and it would be different. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the River and the Church that was quite nice.. Room, The bed could improve as well as pillows and duvet... they could also refresh the rug in the room... even thouhg there was a lot of fabric around, I did not smell anything odd, and I am VERY picky on odors... that could not be said about the corridors of our 4th floor... it did smell odd. Lighting in the room was defecient as most hotels and trying to charge your electronics was a nightmare... once you turned your lights out, it would cut the power of your devices as well, so we had to charge in the bathroom. Bathroom was on the ok side... shower was also on the good side. The bathrobe needs a replacement as it was harsh and over-used... Staff in the lobby could be nicer.... Breakfast in the dining room was very good... great service there! As for the restaurant, I will post a review of its own as it does deserve a star in the Michellin book!!! The gardens outside are quite nice... they needed some care though.. All in all, it was a good hotel and missing some details to maintain the R.C. status in my opinion.... Enjoy

Not only did he know everything about the Duoro Valley, but he also knew everything about the land from the plants to the fruits, the weather, and the history! When I tried to put together a day trip to Douro Valley, I thought the price of 145.00€ per person…read moresomewhat pricey, but after the day, I can totally say it's worth it. Winery visit: I can spend on my own 30-40€ to visit the major wineries near the station, and listen to canned speech by employees. Or I can let Jorge takes me to small producers, where the owners personally take us to tour the properties that have been in their families for generations, pour us their wine, and over the glasses discuss everything from his recent NY visit to Vivino's effect on wine consumption. Lunch: I can spend 20-30€ at one of the restaurants near the station. They will likely be good, but it won't be as special as family style dinner in a vineyard manor that is hundreds of years old. Boat tour: There are hour-long boat tours for 10€ at the dock, where the narration is either from a recording or a printed handout. Here, Jorge takes us out on his own little speedboat, and answers any question we have as we go along. And to be able to drink all the wine samples and not have to worry about navigating the narrow, steep, unpaved and signless roads up and down the valley? Priceless.

My experience: shipping costs of libations are cheaper here than at nearby wineries AND they have a huge selection in the lobby. Of note: don't get locked out on your patio - I did. Also, bathroom mirror is totally see through, similar to a 3 dimensional holograph. Interesting, but I need a mirror. In closing, you will love this spectacular experience if you're looking for a vineyard/winery experience.

I was lucky enough to get up graded to a suite which was a large bedroom with a king bed and balcony, a living area with another balcony and a large bathroom. And it overlooked the river so I could watch the tour boats lazily make their way up the river. There are grounds to wander, a pool to swim in and a walkway along the river that makes a nice day just that much better. The service in this hotel is top notch. Ask for something and someone will run and get it immediately. My problem was I kept getting lost as it rambles and has several different levels so I was always asking for help to get to where I needed to be. The restaurant has a wonderful chef who prepares amazing dishes. I had breakfast and dinner here and you couldn't go wrong with anything on the menu. And the best part? A Portugal hotel who knows that Americans like to drink a lot of coffee in the morning so I got my own pot on the table! Yay for me! The town that this is in doesn't have much going for it . . .the best restaurant in town is in the hotel but you can walk to the train station or to the small shops. All in all this place is luxury in the Douro Valley. Check it out while sipping some of the local wines that grow all over this valley!
