Such a sweet, large, old place to ramble about with friendly employees to help you with their mountains of knowledge. I went there for a Waite Tarot deck and they showed me several options and then when I later expressed the need for a book to explain how to read the cards, they found me the most popular one. As a former librarian. I can say: oh my goodness the books! Books on every topic of esoteric possible! UFOs, witches, runes, astrology, magick, you get the drift. They are priced at the manufacturers list price. Besides the books, there are pendulums, herbs, crystals, incense, all your typical New Age bookstore items. In "the time before", they had lots of classes and they still have a large classroom for the future when we are free to assemble more easily. We found parking right in front of the store for free. I was visiting Minneapolis from the Portland metro area and decided to check out a local crystal and herb shop and one of my local friends recommended this place. my experience was very pleasant. I am legally blind and rely on my other four senses and was very happy that I could smell the shop before I even opened the door. Once inside, the staff was very welcoming, and when I told them what I needed, they were extremely helpful and accommodating! I walked out with several crystals and some lavender oil. Beware! Shady business practices! I was online looking to purchase a rare, out of print book and saw that Magus had a copy. It was priced on their website at $89, and I was so happy to have found it. I was going to,check out when I decided to call the store to see which version of he book they had (the book was released with 4 different covers). The woman I spoke with was having trouble finding it and asked to call me back. A few minutes later another lady calls me back to,say they found the book, it's in great condition, only the price is actually $500!!! Ummmmm... what? I saw the price on the website change from $89 to $500 right in front of my eyes! I was shocked that this was even happening and hung up. Later when I messaged them on social media, their response was " We do apologize for the disappointing interaction. Your inquiry alerted us to the fact that the book was mispriced. As a small operation sometimes these things get missed"- Buyer beware! Shady, shady, shady! read more

I used to go to Magus regularly for my witchy needs when I lived in Minneapolis. Roger, the owner, was always so kind and helpful. I visited again recently. The first visit since they moved. The new (well, new to me) store is large and open, with lots of natural light. The gentleman working was very upbeat and friendly. The kind that brings out a smile in you. I was excited to see the majority of one wall was incense, most of which was Incense from India, a longtime favorite of mine that I actually first discovered in the old Magus store back in the early 90s. Since it's actually difficult to find in stores, I was hoping they might still carry it. Seeing they did really warmed my nostalgic heart. They also have a nice assortment of metaphysical books and a good selection of lovely (mostly silver) jewelry, from talismans and sigils to fashion pieces with various semi-precious stones. My only complaint was that I wish they had more stones for ritual/healing work. I picked out several things (including lots of Incense from India) and had my eye on a stone container with a fossil embedded in it. I hesitated because it had been written on in permanent marker. The gentleman immediately apologized and offered me a discount, which I thought was very kind and professional. Glad to see you're still around, Magus! Went in on a whim to pick up some goodies. This place is a staple, I've been a casual patron since I was really young and my mom would take me with her back in the day; first we'd go to Dream Dragon and then we'd go to Magus (I'm THAT old). The staff has always been friendly, knows their stuff, and has never pressured me into making any purchase or small talk. I love the new location (PARKING OMG). I can't wait till they get all their herbs in. My only complaint is that it's stuffy in there and all the oils, herbs, and incense hangs in the air without the possibility of escaping. I don't know if they can open the doors for a draft or something but it's gotta be rough on the staff and it'll only get worse as the temps go up. Maybe they're noseblind to it and it's not bothersome, if that's the case then never mind me, but if this is one of those situations where the only time the staff gets relief from something like this is for a customer to complain, then here ya go, guys. read more

Oh Magus, its been so long! I remember back in my Gopher days stumbling and venturing into this store. I was stunned with the variety and selection. Since becoming an alumni, I haven't been back to Magus and haven't found a store comparable to Magus yet. If I even venture back to the great tundra, I'll definitely stop by. I had a fine experience up until the end of my time at magus. I had ordered 9 herbs, a golden Benjamin, and 5 candles. I only got my candles and my golden Ben. I'm very disappointed I spent $20 on my herbs and I expected to be able to use them tonight. read more

Magus Books is a great shop that carries something for everybody! They have a unique selection of books on a variety of topics and beliefs, as well as candles, stones, and many other treasures. They also have a large selection of incense that varies from low-average price range. One of the best incense brands they carry always burns for about 2 hours or more for me and it's all natural resin (no glues) which is a plus! I always feel very welcome going into Magus. The atmosphere in the store is warm and pleasant. They seem to really care about their customers and always offer help if I have questions. Went there because I heard good reviews for kratom and was in desperate need. Soon as I got in the door I was bombarded by the tarot card reader striking up a conversation which was obviously for one reason and one reason only. To reel me in. I told her I do not need to lay cards out or talk to an operator to Spirit as we all can speak to Spirit directly. She backed off slightly after this but insisted on showing me her bag full of countless tarot decks. The kratom was unbelievably pricey as online I can find 250 g of Maeng Da for 29.99 free shipping and that's without the discounts which they always have. They were selling it for 109.99 so over 3 and a half times as much and it was about half as weak as what I get online so I had to double the dose incessantly. They are obviously there to make a profit instead of helping people on that one. Right when I was about to leave my younger friend said he would like a tarot reading as she began trying to reel him in. Let me say, she did not give any indication that there was any type of payment necessary nor were there any signs indicating such. She gave him a full reading which lasted about 10-15 minutes and I have two others that can attest to that. He, being young and admittedly somewhat naive said something along the lines of I can't believe this is free. She immediately threw a hissy fit, throwing her hands up in the air and making sure everyone heard exclaiming "You thought this was free?!" and made this huge deal out of it when this was obviously done on purpose. She was preying on a respectable young man that has more than enough issues in his life and did not deserve this treatment. He even was crying at one point yet she was relentless. I offered to pay and she was acting pissed off at us like we stole something. She claimed it was an entire 30 minutes and said it was 2 dollars a minute!!! So it ended up being a little over 65 dollars!!! I had already paid the cash register then on top of that someone came out from the back and as we were trying to leave told us "Hold up! Hold Up! Did they pay?!" Acting as if we were going to call the cops on us or something. Don't go here. They will try to make a sucker of you too, so she can go buy yet another tarot deck frivolously with your hard earned cash. Now I see why in the bible it says that divination and card layers are an abomination. Needless to say we will never set foot in this store again and you shouldn't either. They don't care about helping you. They care about taking your money and that's about it. Horrible experience I should've went somewhere else. read more

Magus is a cool store that I had walked by for years and never really realized. Glad I finally did I always try and buy some incense. Recommendation: buy the individual ones instead of the pre-packaged. They may cost a nickel or so more and burn better and stronger. Lots of books, candles, and other paraphernalia keeps the shopping experience interesting, even if you're just tagging along with someone else. The staff is friendly and helpful but not too over-the-top. Often there is atmospheric music playing at just the right volume. I will give this a proper go. Magus may attract some of the more eyebrow-raise-able clientele in the Cities, but there is no denying that the Magus people know their shit. Some people might think the Occult and Wicca and whatnot is a crock of a shit, which is their opinion, but for people who do believe in/follow/adhere to a lifestyle that includes these things, this is indeed the place to go. Magus hires knowledgeable people who will be able to converse with any customer at any level of knowledge on any path and still be able to help them out. If you are just looking for incense, black candles, or funky new age decor, Magus also is a great place to go. They also bring in cool people that will offer classes on herbal remedies, tarot readings, and a myriad of other skills that are good for people who may not jive with the mystical but still enjoy whipping up their own headache tea or candling their own ear. While I haven't gone into Magus for a while, I still remember it as a cool funky place. read more

Huge selection of incense! There is really something here for every taste, whether you want something fruity and floral or thick and husky, pre-packaged or buildable packs. I love it! I also enjoy their selection of books, though I rarely buy books anymore with so much information readily available at libraries and on the internet. Still, for those into gathering information the old-fashioned way, there you go. I was in search of specific essential oils, and their selection was more pre-mixed with purpose rather than straight up oils. Not bad, just not what I specifically wanted! Everyone was super friendly and helpful, and they have a membership program that costs less than 8 bucks or is free with a purchase over $50. You get a nice little bag and each time you bring the reusable bag back in, you get an 11% discount.. Pretty cool for someone who wants to become a regular shopper! read more

My only interest in Magus is their kratom, so forgive me if I bypass their hocus-pocus library, "psychic" readings, and the rest their other carnival Gypsy schtick. If you're unfamiliar with kratom, someone there will be happy to correct your pronunciation of the word while completely avoiding the topic of what it is and what to do with it. Ok, it's in a legal grey area and is often marketed as a "legal high" and an opiate alternative, I get it- it's the same deal as a "tobacco pipe" at a headshop- you know what it's really used for, but we can't talk about it. Now for me personally, it's a great substitute for alcohol and caffeine, but I digress. Well friends, their kratom prices might be a little better than what a headshop sells (and they don't mind offering that they sell it by the kilo), but 1. The quality (in my opinion) is not the best, and 2. It is vastly over-priced. Case in point- I've tried no less than four of their awkwardly named kratom strains not found elsewhere save for the branding "Maeng Da"- which translates to "pimp-grade". No, I am not making this up. And no, there's nothing special about their supposed Maeng Da, or "pimp-grade" kratom- it's a marketing gimmick. And frankly, it's not as strong what I purchase online, which incidentally makes no such pimp claims. Now the real deal breaker here is the price. Magus sells 20 grams for $12.95 for most of their strains, which breaks down to $.65 a gram (excluding tax). Here's what I do instead- I buy online from a reputable vendor, and I spend $25 (plus $3 shipping) for how much? 250 grams. That's a dime ($.10) a gram vs $.65, and THE QUALITY IS BETTER. Ok, here's a few other reasons for my low review rating: - There's no free parking. They have a lot, but it's employees only. Customers have to park at a parking meter. - Their customer service is served to you wryly by some pierced geek with a grease helmet pony tail who clearly has a fetish for Dungeons and Dragons and speaks in awkwardly coded metaphors. Just cut the shit, dude. There's no need for the "Pimp-grade means different things to different people; it means whatever you want it to mean" bullshit- just give me a meaningful answer or tell me by law that you can't make claims or condone the intentional human consumption based on said law and leave it at that. read more

This store used to be fantastic! I used I love coming in here. Now, not so much. The past few times I have been in I have been treated horribly. The service is getting worse with each visit. Today, I asked about the items I would need for a ritual and I was treated with rudeness. When I told them I wasn't in a coven when asked, they got more rude. To treat a student asking for knowledge with such disdain isn't good for business. I have seen how you have treated other customers and I can easily see why your business is declining. Magus Books is a fantastic occult bookstore with such perks as tarot readings, chair massage, and extremely knowledgeable staff, I have had my cards read three times at Magus, once a year for the past three years. I go to Tami, and highly recommend her to anyone who is interested in getting their cards read. She has incredible insight, is personable, and makes you feel comfortable throughout the reading. The other staff that I have encountered there have been helpful and friendly as well. What a lovely place Magus is. They've got books on just about anything you could ever want to know in regards to metaphysics and spirituality. It's always a treat to see what little trinkets and jewelry they have when I stop in too! When I come here though, my first goal is always veering straight for their wall of herbs. They've got just about any herb you could ever want for tea, spells, and more! Seriously, the herbs take up almost the whole wall, and they're all very reasonably priced. Before you leave though, it's always nice to look at all their different tarot sets for sale in the glass case below the checkout counter; there's so many different artistic versions. To top it all off, every member of the staff that I've met there is so very kind, and you can even ask them to add you to a list to notify you when an item is restocked if it's currently out. Whenever my friend and I make the drive to Minneapolis, this shop is the one place that we never need to think twice before stopping at. read more

The store itself is great. Most staff also great. However one staff member made a very not okay joke about my 13 year old child. When discussing an athame. My son was joking about his friend coming after him with athame and the staff member said something along the lines of "one can only hope" I am writing this to remind people that you never know what other people are going through and jokes like this can have a ripple effect. I had some time to waste today, while waiting for take out. I needed incense and since most of my favorite carriers of this product have either burned down or closed, I took to the internet, which led me to Magnus Books and Herbs. I walked in and right there by the door is the incense. I'm thinking, what luck, nice selection, I take all of 2 minutes to make my choices. There aren't any bags, so with my 25 sticks in my hand, I go to the "empty" counter to check out. The clerk asks if I'm ready, to which I respond "yes, but there aren't any bags." she says there are, and I turn around and walk five feet to the display to show her the two inch bag that's sitting by it's lonesome in the container. As I turn around, the woman who was behind me in line also states there aren't any bags for her incense either. The clerk states she has a few bags behind the counter and the woman who was now behind me steps up to MY place at the counter. She has a basketful of costume jewelery, healing stones, burners etc. I have 25 incense sticks. Instead of either of these women doing the RIGHT thing and let me check out first, they proceed to go on with the most aggravating 20 minutes of my life! One by one, they go through her items and talking about everything in her basket, all the while the friend is on the other side giving commentary, all while speaking in a Kardashianesque accent. The clerk has somehow been lured into thinking she has no somehow been accepted into this "Real housewives of Wayzata" scenario and is yukking it up with these two idiots, all the while I wait. When the clerk is done ringing she asks this jackass if she wants to join the email list. She says she does, the clerk asks her name, to which she replies Marrie, with an M. I have changed the name, but YOU know who you are. Last name, Jackass turns, looks me up and down, and whispers Benzington. The clerk says she did not hear her, and she puts her hand over her mouth and says this name again. I can hear you idiot, I'm a foot away from you!!! So insulting!! She goes on with her email, in a whisper, which, I again, can hear and pays her tab. My turn, "Thanks for your patience", says the smug clerk with a smerk on her face, like she's just been inducted into some secret club, that I just couldn't possibly relate to. Really? No apology? This is not Northeast. This is Marrie Benzington. Extremely poor customer service. Perhaps you should move your store into some hoity-toity city and hob-nob with people you would like to serve. read more

Herbs are stale and everything in store looks like it was just shipped in from China and marked up three times. Total waste of time. Terrible service. I signed up to do Tarot - Reading was completely off. I have leukemia and the reading for current and past health was "Excellent" I wanted a refund and I was refused.
